- ALESI was 51 seconds behind Schumacher at one point and still caught him! Comments throughout the video are from Jean himself who described this as the race of his life (not canada 95!)
“In my Formula 1 career there were many races I should have won but didn’t, so it’s quite correct that one I failed to finish was the race of my life! I qualified second to Michael Schumacher and it was raining on race day. Before the start, I went to the race director and said, ‘The startline is downhill, and we don’t have a handbrake, so how can I avoid a penalty if my car moves?’ He said, ‘As long as you line up behind the line, even if your car moves a little bit, as long as you don’t improve position it’s fine.'”
“So, at the start, my car was moving a little and I did not improve my position. And not only did I get a penalty, my team-mate Gerhard Berger did too! I was totally fed up with that decision. So I had to stop for a 10-second stop-go penalty, and dropped to 10th. I did one lap and then got on the radio: ‘I want slicks.’ Although it was still quite wet, I was passing everyone - I even overtook Johnny Herbert down the inside at 130R on my in-lap before putting on the slicks. It wasn’t without drama: I had a couple of 360s on the straight! On one lap, Pedro Lamy pushed me onto the grass exiting the chicane. Watch it on TH-cam, I had the onboard camera - it’s amazing!”
“People say that I’m special in the wet, in those conditions with slicks, but all I gave was my maximum. Perhaps it’s my driving style that explores the limit of the tyres, and keeps the heat in them more than everyone else. I’m not scared to lose control of the car. By lap nine I’d moved up from 15th to ninth, and was lapping five seconds per lap faster than everyone else - including Michael, who was still on wets. A lap later I was sixth. Then I passed Damon Hill around the outside of the chicane. By lap 12 I was back in second, just a few seconds behind Michael, who had pitted by now, and I was setting fastest lap after fastest lap. I could almost hear him as he looked in his mirrors: ‘What is he doing there? I thought he had a penalty’.”
“I was having a great time, but it wasn’t to be my day again. The driveshaft broke, and all the oil came out of the differential. It had been fun while it lasted.”

An absolutely phenomenal race and that's why people like me loved to support Jean - you just never knew what you were going to get. No, he wasn't a 'complete' driver like Michael but he gave us moments like these that we'll remember forever. Forza Jean!

I agree with you. He was my favourite driver growing up. I have to admit he was his own worst enemy though. Yes he had bad luck, terrible luck, but he was very highly strung, and bad career decisions, and burning bridges, was his downfall. Same happened with Alonso.

He deserved a world championship over who? He only won 1 race in his whole career and despite all his racing talent he was a liability.

I watched this race live on the TV and I adored Jean Alesi, He had very bad luck all around but the ones in 95 are hurting in the sense they really hammered his final placement in the championship. Mechanical failure at Monza, Spa-Franchorchamps and few others that I may be missing. There is also the fact that the gap between Ferrari and Renault teams (williams and benetton) kept growing and growing throughout the season. Just remember that Alesi finished 2nd in Argentine 10 sec behind Hill but 20 sec ahead of Schumacher in the early stage of the season. Also Berger was second to schumacher on the Imola grid , can't remember exactly, by setting a lap time with a next to zero gap. In the second half of season Ferrari were around a full second ( even 1,5 in some races) behind in qualification.
All the above said, we need to recognize that Alesi was a bit over-emotional and driven a bit too much by instinct. The side of him had advantages and disadvantages.
The advantage is that stunning drive at Suzuka and the disadvantage is that spin driving outside of Lamy, He was so much faster than any body else and making up so much time that he could really afford to lose 2-3 second there , if needed, but play it safer. This side of him made him loose in other instance also.
And finally, he was not really dominating his team mate in Ferrari and Benetton years. He was better all around but that's it. They were pretty much equal in qualifications. Also, there were particular circuits ( obviously Interlagos, Estoril and Hockenheim are 3 of these) where his teammate performed better year after year.
With all the love and admiration I have for Alesi thanks to his very good races and drives, I am just trying to be not biased and sided. That's all.
Thanks for your wonderful comment! You actually touch on some topics that i planned to address in future videos. Normally drivers improve and mature over time. But I feel alesi didnt improve much over time because he felt very happy and confident with his abilities (thanks to his stunning breakthrough seasons). He was not the most professional driver, but for me certainly the most entertaining. He was theatre, drama passion and spectacle. And ive never found another driver that I rooted for as much since.
@@Dalesi I think there is perhaps an argument to say that the constantly unreliable Ferrari contributed a lot to this failure to mature. Looking back over the old seasons now, you can really feel his frustration growing and growing. In 91, he was a bright-eyed boy, under the wing of Prost, optimistic for the future. By 94, he was lying on the tarmac next to his yet again stricken car, forlorn, head in hands, wondering what he did to deserve this rotten luck. It wore him down immensely (as it would anyone, but even more so for a emotional guy like Jean) to see his supreme efforts all go up in smoke so many times. By the end, he just seemed to take it as a given and he was pleasantly surprised if it didn't happen.
It's hard not to wonder what could have been if he'd taken that Williams offer instead. Maybe he would have sorted out some of his problems, become a bit more patient, learned better how to apply his talent, and not become so ingrained in a battling mindset. In fact, when he makes that pass on Hill at the chicane and the TV shows Frank's reaction, I swear you can clearly see Frank thinking, "FFS Damon... if I could click my fingers right now and make you two switch seats, I'd do it in a heartbeat."

Watched the race yesterday and my conclusion was, Alesi best of the race. And you made this tribute ! Very very good, so everyone can understand the skills of Alesi, f1 hero !
Jean and the 412T2 were so fast in 95. Sad the reliability was poor, a lot of podium was possible, maybe one or two more victory. but he give us some great race this year, allways fun to watch him driving his style with his hands up on the wheel and his leaning head on curves. Thank you Jean !
Could have won in Spa, Monza, Suzuka and potentially Nurburging and already won in Canada, could have been 5 wins and more podiums and he should have been the real title contender, so sad
@@guillaumefouche no in Nürburgring Jean could not win. They gambled by skipping a pit stop and then Schumacher was seconds faster with tyres. The regrets are about Imola (no fuel enough), Monza, and maybe spa and Suzuka because on dump tracks they've been able to choose the pressures of the tyres
@@guillaumefouche 95 season for me remains the most exciting season of FERRARI more than others. Jean way to drive was pure emotion. I don't mind victory's number. Thank you Jean ! He was the domonstration that numbers don't count like emotions.
Absolute legend Alesi was. Drove that Ferrari by the scruff of the neck and was epic in car control. Just a shame he never had a championship car with Ferrari
A real shame! I think he showed in 95 that he could have been unstoppable with a decent car !
It was a shame. The first time I thought he was special was 1992 - his drives in Spain and France that year were unbelievable. Plus he qualified the F92/A higher up than it should have been consistently, and blew off a very talented driver in Ivan Capelli. He made very few mistakes from 1992 onwards, but I still think he was a bit too emotional behind the wheel, and unlike Schumacher, Prost, et al, was not the consummate politician and diplomat that would have galvanised the team behind him. Passion before reason - like Paul Tracy in CART. But that was why I loved him.
I watched this live. I was on at 3am. I was 16. I still am a huge alesi fan. I wish more driver drove with their hearts and not their head.

Pure legend. Ferrari through and through to the expense of his success. As a Ferrari fan myself the respect I have for such a unbelievably fast driver to give the team all his fantastic talent for very little reward can’t be measured. So wish they could have given him the title his ability deserved

Iirc, that ferrari was a seriously good car in the wet. Martin brundle commented on it when he was still driving in 95/96, from his observations of it. When he first drove it, Schumacher couldn't understand how they only won one race in it during the 95 session.
I think it's worth bearing in mind that what we are witnessing here maybe have been more than just Alesi's driving skill.
Schumacher's car, on the other hand, was known to be very nervous and difficult to drive. Both alesi and Berger crashed heavily in it when they drove it in the off season. Schumacher wasn't able to put it his epic wet weather drives until he got his hands on a more stable car later in the decade
For this race in particular you can see Ferrari gambled on a high downforce setting. Look closely at the condensation from the wings for example and how Jean can’t pass Herbert eventhough he is in his slipstream.

Tutto cuore, piede e quella sensibilità su bagnato....un vero pilota della generazione di Senna...avresti meritato almeno un mondiale ed invece il fato, ha voluto darti una sola vittoria in Canada, in compenso però, sei entrato nei cuori di noi tifosi Ferraristi e del motosport tutto. Un uomo vincente, sempre sul pezzo e corretto al punto di aver sempre difeso la scuderia del cavallino nei suoi anni più bui, quando invece potevi finire in Wiliams e vincere molto. Ma si sa il tuo sogno era guidare un Rossa, nel bene nel male, nelle delusioni e nelle gioie, ci hai regalato emozioni indelebili da ricordare gelosamente, augurandoti il meglio anche x Giuliano. Un pensiero sincero ed un grazie campione senza corona, ma con un regno di tifosi fedeli.

@@Dalesi Suzuka 1995, una gara epica! Ma anche Monza e Spa...dello stesso anno......e poi nel 1994 quel curioso episodio ad Hockenheim : l'esplosione della carena copri motore a piena farfalla in pieno rettifilo a 350 km/h ....be, non si è fatto mancare niente il grande Alesi..
Ps: il suo casco, con i colori in memoria di Elio de Angelis. Purtroppo non esistono più questi piloti genuini, la F1 è cambiata così tanto che ha mantenuto solo il suo vecchio nome.
Great video. This is among the greatest displays of wet weather driving I have ever seen in F1, one of those performances full of moments where you just gasp at the brilliance and cannot comprehend the car control. Alesi did the #27 justice at Ferrari, pure adrenaline inducing excitement was never far away with him.

Was it known by this point that Schumacher and Irvine were replacing Berger and Alesi at Ferrari for the following year? Jonathan Palmer, like John Watson when commentating for Eurosport, was clearly a fan.
Yep, it was announced in the summer (?) of 1995. I remember that it was common knowledge that the 1995 Monza grand prix will be Alesi's and Berger's last home race. As I remember right Alesi was offered to stay as a second driver but he didn't accept. Ukyo Katayama would have been one of Benetton's driver for 1995 (he never confirmed which top tier team, but Mild Seven sponsorship kinda gives it away), but he had cancer in his back so he could not sign the contract. This information came out years later and for a long time everyone thought that Katayama was a bad driver, while he was actually driving with a lot of pain.
Charles Leclerc is the new Jean Alesi.
Everytime something happens with him this is what I think of. Especially those times when he has incidents when it looks when he’s trying to overcompensate for the cars lack in performance.

There was a race after this, Ferrari made a special V12 engine for their last race in Adelaide before they switched to V10 for 1996
@@Dalesi what was the special v12? There is bbc footage of alesi quali Adelaide, impossibly high revving engine, maybe that’s it? Just watched the footage and yes, special engines flown in, I guess qualifying ‘grenade’ engines
@@mark4lev thats the one! Just for the last qualifying session they produced an extra high revving engine. I don’t remember the increase in revs, but if you compare the sound from that session with others from the same season youll be able to tell the difference!
@@Dalesi they never told you the rpm back then, but must be 17,500 rpm at least. Highest revving v12 ever made, no one will ever try again, due to emissions etc, v12 not acceptable. I just wanted to point out it was Alan Jones talking about the engines. This was bbc coverage but was for the Australian audience. BBC in the U.K. didn’t show qualifying very often.

Legendary drive - probably the best of Alesi’s career, alongside the one just three weeks before at the Nurburgring, also in the wet, also dueling with Hill and Schumacher. While most fans mostly remember his race against Senna in 1990, I think 1995 is the key year in the story of Alesi’s career, due to his victory in Canada, his stellar performances in the rain, but also the bitter heartbreak of losing his Ferrari drive to Schumacher.
