      Another super easy way is to throw them in a bucket or barrel with an air stone and an aquarium pump. I left them in there for months and only killed a few from drowning.

      If you put them horizontally don't cut snorcles uneven from the node point. Cut between two nodes, so Both sides have same amount of snorcles. Where from the new trees shall get food. And what we do, sprout them before putting them into the soil. When roots come out within 12/14 days we put them into the soil where drainage is good, no stagnant water. Let me know the result pls. Thanks in advance.

      @@QuaziAhasanHoSM We are having a very dry season with very little rain so far this year. It's getting warm and we got a little rain over the last few days. My other bamboo's are just starting to make some new shoots from the ground but all varieties seem to be growing branches everywhere for the last month or more. It seems like they have enough energy to push branches out, will they have enough strength to make roots? I will try some new cuttings soon. Thank you very much for the advise Quazi. People think I know everything about bamboo but I'm the first to admit I'm still learning, and there is much to know. What kinds of bamboo do you have in Bangladesh?

    • @QuaziAhasanHoSM
      @QuaziAhasanHoSM 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@seetheforest well that makes two of us, learner. We have more than 400 species here in Bangladesh, and ours is a tropical country. We don't try to propagate in rainy season because of heavy moisture. Which causes the ryzhom to rot.

    • @seetheforest
      @seetheforest  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@QuaziAhasanHoSM I figured you would have many species. In Florida we have only a few. The biggest growers in Florida maybe have 50 species at the most. We don't have wild bamboo you have to find it and move it. I have about 6 different species.

      If your collecting get some newer shoots after they get some roots and a few branches with leaves. A few roots and leaves and it will be able to grow. Start off with part shade and move tgem into more open sun over a few weeks. Then plant them in the ground with a bunch of leaf and mulch they will grow like rockets.

    I’ve added perlite with Mushroom compost. Its mid November & I’m keeping them (Big Blue) inside (Jacksonville, Fl 32226). Its pretty chilly this week so I’m keeping them inside & chasing the sun from window to window, got house’s heater on, & soil is damp. Sound ok? Just stuck them in 3 days ago. Ever used growth hormone? Thanks so much. Enjoying following the time lapse you’ve documented of this too. 👍

      @seetheforest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's getting pretty cool here too. 58 over night and days in the 70's. I just started the last bunch of my D. Longinternodes seeds and the cool night on day two didn't seem to hinder them from sprouting. I had about 75% start that morning. I gave them a mass planting putting 22 in a 3 gal container. I put them inside until they poke up.
      Your should love mushroom compost. They don't need any growth hormone. Worm tea and organic matter like leaves and wood chips make the best food. I use a lot of charcoal in the bigger pots. Mine just put up a couple big new shoots.

Of all the pieces I cut sprouted after scraping but I’d say most….Some “sticks” that are in a bucket of water are still green and pushing out new leaves without any visible roots so that’s got my head scratchin’…… figure leave them in there until roots pop out or maybe etch a different section…. Did the younger shoot in this video grow well?
    I have dozens of massive new shoots (upwards to 8 inch in diameter) that grew ridiculously fast last year. It's a variant of Golden Green stripe bambusa, but it looks a bit different and grows much larger than it should.). But it grew so fast their size/weight made them break off about 20 feet up. And the new smaller ones all broke off about 15 feet up from the hurricanes we got this year. So, all of my newest shoots are now becoming massive bushes with huge branches coming off of them. So I'm considering propagating them.
    But, from what I learned, the newer shoots usually don't propagate well.
    The cuttings I planted last year are still a bit thinner (like a branch) but the new shoots coming off them (about 5 times each over the past year) are growing nicely, but easily stunted and broken off.
    I've so many new bamboo now that I started giving the newer, smaller ones away on the side of my house lol.
    Hopefully all is well with you, and your plants fared well.
    Be sound.

You might try cutting a culm maybe 5 feet long or more and burry it a few inches under the ground. It could grow if it has enough even water and some shade. Don't over do anything. Keep it cool, moist but not wet, and no direct sun at first.

    Could thus be done with a sharp reciprocating saw rather than a pipe cutter?

    • @seetheforest
      @seetheforest  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. And if you are harvesting and cutting near the ground the saw works better because the walls are very thick and the tubing cutter takes a LOT of force to cut that nearly solid piece.

      @seetheforest  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A little water will get in from rain. I dont know if I would fill it. Some people say that the top should stay open for air. I have seen a video from India where they put mud on the top and wrap it in plastic to keep it from drying out. I wrapped some plastic on a few of mine but can't say it helped.

    What do you do with all the bamboo? I'm looking for bamboo because I want to make a dish with it ( thai bamboo sticky rice). I can't grow any bamboo due to the cold winters but would love to grow some. If you know any bamboo that is frost tolerant that would be helpful.

      Moso and some of the other running bamboos are frost and snow tolerant. I only grow the tropical clumping giants. And one "purple" bamboo that I'm not really sure of the species name.

    What's the bamboo species? That bamboo is only a couple of months old? Wow! It seems like I could plant something like that and have building materials by the end of growing season. I do get winter frost at my place, but if it grows to that size in a matter of months, I'm surely interested to find out what bamboo species this is.

    • @seetheforest
      @seetheforest  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you are party correct. Bamboo when established and with a large rhizome (root ball) will grow full sized culms in a month or two but bamboo is a grass and in one season it would still be green and fairly soft. At this early stage it will shrink and crack. Maybe good for drying, splitting and weaving but not good for long term structure building. Especially true with this B. Vulgaris. It needs three to four years to "harden off" and get some density. The mature bamboo will be less prone to shrinkage and cracking. Also bugs can eat that soft green grass like it was hay. They enjoy the hardened bamboo as well but it takes them more time to eat it. If you get the bamboo at the sweet spot about 3 years old before it gets brown or dead spots, you can hook plumbing reducers and pvc pipe and pump Timbor preservative through it with about 25 psi. This will make it last longer but still isn't really made for below ground or in contact with wet ground. If you want to bury it of have it in the weather and last you would need to also seal it to keep the Timbor from leaching out.
      Different bamboos are better for construction than others all bamboo is NOT the same. Some have very thick walls some are just thin walled tubes especially at the top. So the type of bamboo makes the difference. The Bambusa Longinternode has a nearly solid large 3 to 4" culm that is used for construction and scaffolding. Kind of like woods, you have balsa and pine on the soft end and oak and hickory on the hard side.

      @@seetheforest Hello! Thank you very much for your reply. None of the bamboo in my plans is intended for ground contact or expected to be exposed to the weather. Its mostly for roofing support of DIY storage structures. I do get the occasional blizzard in my area (national capitol region), and the roof is nearly horizontal, which means that it does need to hold up significant weight at times, without the bamboo getting broken or crushed. I'm looking for a fast-growing species I could grow in my area, potentially in a tall, unheated greenhouse, but preferably just outdoors. Any recommendations? Thank you in advance!

      Sooner is always better. If they have been in a container and are root-bound at all you need to remove or comb and separate the knotted roots because they will never spread out if you don't.

      Hey, q uestion. have you tried replanting from newly sprouted cones? is this a good idea or should I try your method first

    • @seetheforest
      @seetheforest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nickkailey7682 Not sure I understand your question. This is how I make newly sprouted clones. I have planted these and they do well. It does take a season in the ground for them to get going but after that they grow like crazy. This bamboo is Bambusa Vulgaris and in a warm climate like Florida it does well. Different species may be harder or easier to sprout and I found these will sprout better in Nov when the temps go down into the 60's at night..
      Running bamboos do better in cooler climates and you can't clone them like the tropical clumpers.

      Well I have no idea what kind of bamboo you have or if it can be cloned. The ones I have here are Bambusa Vulgaris and if the cuttings are made at the right stage and with favorable weather and temp they will sprout.
      The best cuttings are from new shoots after the first summer when they have leaves and some branches. Again not all bamboo species like to make aerial roots.

    Is it possible to grow it full height in the container itself? Please explain, Sir !

    • @seetheforest
      @seetheforest  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ANy plant will be limited by the size of the container. Bamboo will grow and fill a container and get root bound. However if you have a HUGE container it could grow as big as it could get. Use a 25 gal tree pot or larger if you can.

    • @sharduldeshpande97

      @@seetheforest Ok Thanks ! Also, is it possible to harvest the bamboo after 1-1.5 yrs?

    • @seetheforest
      @seetheforest  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sharduldeshpande97 You can cut the young shoots or yearlings but they are still more like grass than wood. They don't harden off until about 3 or 4 years. If you wait 4 years the culm will be about at the end of it's cycle turning brown and getting dead or grey spots. At this stage they will be a little hard to treat with preservatives. When they are still green and about 3 years old you can connect a sewer pipe connector with a hose clamp and a piece of pipe with a cap and pump Timbor or some other wood preservative through the stalk with pressurized air in a few minutes and make your bambooo last much longer.
      The young soft, green bamboo will dry out and crack and split and get eaten by bugs very quickly if not protected and sealed well. Also a good idea to season your bamboo and let it dry in a warm place for a long time (a year) to convert starches and sugars in the stalk to "caramelize" into a more preserved state.
      Also if you start chopping and harvesting your bamboo before it gets to full size it will stay smaller and not reach it's full potential.
