Building A Cabin In The Woods - Part Eight - Off The Grid - Framing Walls And Installing Windows

In this episode we continue installing metal roofing sheets, begin framing walls, and throwing in the windows in our cabin. We gained a lot of progress the first weekend of this video due to help from friends and family, causing a very productive weekend to transpire. They helped us frame 3 walls on the main floor of the cabin, while we focused primarily on the loft wall, windows and sheeting exterior walls with plywood. The second weekend it was very rainy and we decided to clear out some of the windows we have been storing and bring them down to the cabin to get them ready for installation. We also brought down the old wood burning stove we have been eagerly waiting to put into the cabin and we are happy to say that it is starting to feel more like home with this addition.
In the middle of nowhere in the Canadian forest, we are attempting to build a Timber Framed Cabin and we are documenting the process to show you how to build a cabin yourself. Our cabin is completely off the grid and we are working on it mainly with the help of friends and family. The goal is to live there while becoming fully self sufficient!

Hey guys. Can't tell you how much I have enjoyed following your progress on your cabin in the woods. I eagerly looked forward to each new video that y'all posted, the last one being in June 2020. A few months later, Covid 19 made its ugly appearance. I can only hope and pray that you are both well and that neither of you have been adversely affected by it and that it. has not been the reason why no new videos have been posted since last summer. Know that you guys are missed and hoping to see y'all again real soon.
Thanks for the love! Luckily none of us had any issues with covid but we have just been too busy to edit any videos but with all the support we have been getting I’m motived to get an update video out soon and continue on showing the progress so stay tuned!

Hi from northern Michigan. Looking good guys. Don't get discouraged about the slow days. Cuz they can fester and ruin the rest of the build. Just know that you got to keep stoking the fire to keep the steam, coming. Slow and steady wins the race.

This is the only video I’ve seen of yours. Just subscribed. You need a Thermacell. It keeps the mosquitos away in a large area around the area it sits at. Look it up online. 👍🇨🇦

It looks like you haven’t treated the main post timbers. Use a 50/50 oil diesel mix, lasts almost as long as pressure treated.
Thanks for the advice I’ve been wondering how to seal them, is there much odour from it once finished?
Woodland Retreat the solvents should gas off within a week or two, it will always have a touch of motor oil smell tho haha.

hey, this is random, but my wife and I enjoyed watching your youTube videos. All summer, she's been bugging me, saying "what happened to these guys building the cabin in BC?" She just mentioned it again, so I figure I'll ask you. Are you guys going to post more videos? How's the cabin coming along?
We’re glad that you guys enjoyed watching the videos ! We’re still working on the cabin, but it’s a lot further along then the last video we posted. We’re actually staying in it right now, although there’s still a lot of work to be done. We’re just insulating the inside and it gets pretty warm when the wood burning stove is going. Video editing has been delayed for the past couple of months due to the time commitment, but we’re considering getting back into editing.
We’re happy that people liked the videos though, and every comment asking for us to come back makes me want to get back at making them again.

I watched thousands of videos on building cabins etc. Your way of framing walls and the sequence of how to get the job done is most unconventional. Not sure why the plywood has gaps in between. Do you plan to insulate your walls and ceilings?
Plywood on the walls almost always has gaps in between, usually up to half an inch. Yes we insulated the walls and the ceilings and the floor.
This cabin is not like most projects. Most houses or cabins you would have the roof sitting on the walls, in our cabin we built the entire timber structure first and the roof is sitting on the timber structure. Because of this we didn’t have to have the walls up to put the roof on the place.

Is the black sheeting Tyvek moisture barrier?
It is 30 minute tar paper. A very good moisture barrier we use in this area
Where did you get that window? What do you call that window design?
I think they are the 2700 series from euroclad if not you can probably find the style on the euroclad website.
