- Atlanta Braves 1 at NY Yankees 4, F -- The Yankees became the first team to sweep consecutive World Series in 60 years -- since the DiMaggio-led Yankees did it to the Cubs and Reds in 1938-39 - when they beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1 in Yankee Stadium. After a regular season filled with personal tragedies and illnesses, the final game of the decade saw 56,752 fans cheer on Roger Clemens for seven-plus innings as he allowed just one run, then sat back and watched as Mariano Rivera finished off the Braves for the Yankees' 25th World Championship.
It was a glorious time, before 9/11 or the world went crazy... what a time to be alive and at these games.
Agreed, the 90’s were a time of complete joy. The Cold War had ended, Putin wasn’t going nuts reconsolidating the old USSR, terrorism was that thing that happened in 1992 and the sun was a little bit brighter but not as hot. Man I miss the 90’s.

The standing ovation for Roger always gives me the chills..he pitched a great game and deserved it..he was always hated by the Yankees and their fans, but on this night, he was a Yankee and was our pitcher for the clincher...He was a gamer and a work horse, so he was a great fit for the Yankees at that time...

The difference between Bob Costas and Joe Buck is that Costas genuinely loved/enjoyed covering baseball. Joe Buck seems to only be in it for the money and "prestige" of being able to cover baseball's biggest events. Basically, Buck doesn't seem to have as much passion or reverence as Costas during his heyday. What makes things even worse, is that Joe Buck has been the de facto national TV voice of MLB (not counting cable outlets like ESPN & TBS) since at least, the late '90s.
Funny, Costas proclaimed after the Braves won in 1995 the team of the decade. Oh how a difference of 4 years and 3 titles changed who the team of the 90's was.
The Braves played 5 WS in 1990s - more than any team in that decade - from the beginning (1991) to the end (1990), they also won all division titles. It's sad that Braves only won 1 WS, but Yankees only played 3 in last 4 years of 1990s.

Al is the only one on the current NBC roster to have any major league baseball experience with covering numerous WS in the 80's. While Tirico seems to be the face of NBC Sports for the future, he has no experience covering professional baseball, so it would be naive and unlikely that they would put him in such a prestigous spot so early. It would be more likely to see him on the 2nd or 3rd team or hosting pre-and-post-game duties (like he is doing now on Sunday Night Football) to gain his footing with the sport before he eventually assumes the prominent position.

The 1999 team had a chip on their shoulders, it was an opportunity to show that they were for real. They weren't able to repeat in 1997, this one gives them a chance to prove that they can follow up their 1998 season well enough.

Honestly, seeing Roger touch the Babe Ruth memorial in the beginning nearly made me cry, that place was always "The house that Ruth built". So many great things happened at that stadium, and they tore it down. At least they built the new one literally across the street.

Even when watching this, I kind of felt that NBC was one foot out the door w/ their MLB coverage following the failure of the Baseball Network joint venture from 1994-95. They didn't broadcast any regular season games what so ever from 1996-2000. By 1999, I tried to make a consciousness decision to tape record as many NBC MLB broadcasts (I felt bad that I was too young to really appreciate the "glory days" w/ Vin Scully and company during the '80s) as possible.

Ah the better of the Boone boys…yet everyone remembers Aaron because that insane 11th inning first pitch walk off homer in game 7 of the 2003 ALCS. I remember where I was and who I was with on that one.
Not to mention that homer in 2003 was probably the sole reason anyone would defend the guy's god-awful managerial decisions that has gotten worse as time went by.
I liked it better when The MLB was on NBC and ABC. He was right. The Braves starters have discussed it many times: how people will give all the credit to Jeter and Rivera, and they forget Cone, Pettitte, El Duque, and Clemens. Because of Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz, the Braves always had the advantage in the starting rotation, but the Braves starters will tell you the Yanks weren’t all that far behind.
Knoblauch was amazing in his first 8 seasons. He didn’t have a long career but in his time he managed 44 WAR. That’s crazy.

Funny how Maddox and Glavine were nothing special in the playoffs when the umps started calling it correctly. Yeah, I'll go ahead and say what most people already know but would never say. Neither Glavine OR Maddox would've been even remotely close to the HOF without the benefit of umpires calling absolutely ridiculous, insane, outside pitches that extra long bats couldn't hit if they tried for their entire careers. Maddox would've at least been a serviceable Major League pitcher but Glavine would've been nothing more than a guy who'd go out to throw a Home Run Derby during the All Star Break. A Maddox or Glavine strike was defined anywhere from 2 inches off the plate to the on deck circle. Out of all the instances of cheating in sports history, nothing tops the absolute BS of Glavine/Maddox of the 90's. They didn't even deserve to win ONE World Series in the 90's.

NBC missing out on the MLB contract was a huge missed opportunity. It would've likely bolstered the NBC Sports Network and helped make them a more legitimate competitor to ESPN. Also, having MLB would've provided a great promotional tool for NBC's otherwise weak primetime programming outside of the NFL season.

It's a tough call, the 1999 bullpen might be the deciding factor, whether or not they could shut down the 09 homer machine. The 2009 version might've wilted under the bright lights of the old Yankee Stadium, as ARod-led teams had so many times in the past.

This is the last World Series NBC would broadcasting which is too bad because I think their coverage exceeds what FOX gives.
I would rather listen to Joe Morgan and Bob Costas than I would listen to John Smoltz and Joe Buck although I am a Braves fan, Their duo works better for me because Joe Buck sounds like a college professor giving a lecture while Bob's passion for the game keeps my attention. Watching baseball on FOX is painfully boring while NBC keeps it real.

In the regular season they had a winning record against every MLB team and they had a winning record against every team in both leagues since interleague play began that decade. The Braves had a winning record against every team including the Yankees, Blue Jays and Marlins. Yes they lost to some of those same teams in the playoffs but the Braves won the 1995 World Series and they won the most games overall. The Atlanta Braves dominated the sport of baseball for 14 seasons and won a World record 14 division championships. The Atlanta Braves are and always will be the team of the 90s! In the history books of sports that is their nickname and not the Yankees. The Braves were just better but the Yankees were at best the team of the late 90s but the for the whole decade the Braves dominated the sport.

The Reds won two in the 1970s with the Big Red Machine tied with the Pirates and Yankees, but the Oakland Athletics won 3 in that decade.

Costas jumped the gun too soon in 1995.
Clemens wasn’t that great his first year in pinstripes. He was fair. He got back to his dominant self in the middle of 2000. He pitched that dominate game vs Seattle in 2000 playoffs when he struck out 15 or so batters. And he won the Cy Young in 2001. He pitched a great game 7.vs Schilling in 2001 WS but Mariano couldn’t hold it.
With any luck, Clemens should have 4 rings if Mo didn't blow 01 and Schiraldi didn't blow 86.
Clemens was banged up in much of 1999. DL stint and nagging groin & hamstring injury all season. It's probably the worst year of his career, honestly. He was totally mediocre in 99 due to the injuries and getting used to NY.
And the Yankees would go on again to win the World Series in 2000 and 2009 while the Braves would never see another World Series in fact they would lose the NLCS in 2001 and lose the first round NLDS in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and then in Bobby Cox's final season in 2010.

They were the best team in the NL that year. Then got steamrolled. Maybe the Mets exhausted them the week before with the NLCS Games 5 & 6 going 15 innings and 11 innings respectively.
But Game 3 really cemented the Braves' fate. This Yankee team did not give an inch. The Braves gave too many.

How???? The Yankees had the best record in the American League in 1999. They beat the Indians head to head 7 out of 10 meetings that season. Cleveland also lost the year before to the Yankees in 6. Yankees would of handled the Indians too!

It was because of this Yankee dynasty that Selig opened the doors to letting every mediocrity into the post-season. After 2002 some weak team would fake its way to the "fall classic" on a yearly basis. It's a joke now. And poor Joe Morgan, just can't admit this Yankee dynasty was better than his Big Red Machine.

It's a fluke of language. We identify decades by their name rather than by ordinal number. That is, the years from 2001-2010 are the 201st decade, even though the 2000's are the years from 2000-2009. The 20th century ran from 1901-2000, but the 1900's ran from 1900-1999.

Let's just say, this team made their successful mark in their period (i.e. the Yankees winning five World Championships in a 15-year span) while another team made their mark within another period (i.e. the Red Sox winning two in-between the Yankees 'bookend' titles in 2004 and 2007).
It's fun to go through these late 90's, early 2000's games and try and figure out who was on steroids. If we only knew then what we know now.......

If we go by the Gregorian calendar, some people use the 1 through 0.
But other people like to use the 0-9 method since consider individual decades as historical entities in themselves (i.e. the 1960s).
Those people argue that the 20th century consist of the 1900s, 1910s, 1920s , 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

The Atlanta Braves will always be the real team of the 90s. In the regular season they had a winning record against every MLB team and they had a winning record against every team in both leagues since interleague play began that decade. The Braves had a winning record against every team including the Yankees, Blue Jays and Marlins. Yes they lost to some of those same teams in the playoffs but the Braves won the 1995 World Series and they won the most games overall. The Atlanta Braves dominated the sport of baseball for 14 seasons and won a World record 14 division championships. The Atlanta Braves are and always will be the team of the 90s! In the history books of sports that is their nickname and not the Yankees. The Braves were just better but the Yankees were at best the team of the late 90s but the for the whole decade the Braves dominated the sport. The Braves did not blow their chance. The racist umpires called the Yankees safe in game 3 on a base play or the Braves would have been up 3 to 0 in the 96 Series. That's why Blacks and people of color stopped watching baseball. The White good ole boy no hair wearing anti hip-hop prep boy Yankees were given that World Series by the racist umpires that did not want Black people in the Black Mecca of Atlanta to win another World Series. That's why racist Fox sports said this is a war in 1996. The Braves represent the Brave middle American soldiers, the poor and middle class Whites, the Native Americans, the blacks and people of color. The Yankees represent the Evil Empire. The rich white prep boys in Wall Street. It was a war against people of color. Black people and Hip-hop saw that World Series as an attack against people of color and against our culture. We came back in 1999 but saw the Baseball still did not want Colored Folks. So Baseball games became attended by mostly White older Yankees loving kind of people and the youth went to other sports. The Braves and Yankees used to be stadiums full of Black fans and today it's more Lilly white than ever before. In Atlanta in 2020 the Braves made a lot of noise and more Blacks and Latinos started come and support them in last year's playoffs but most Black Americans treat baseball with suspicion. MLB for some reason had something against Atlanta because It was a Black American city but if Atlanta was in lilly white Kansas the Braves would have probably won 3 or 4 World Series. I think the bias umpiring against Atlanta was because MLB did not want a bunch of Hank Aaron loving Black people at their games in every town cheering the Braves. They have worked hard to make the Braves as white and suburban as possible before they let the Braves win a World Series. I went to a Braves game at Yankee Stadium in 1998 where the Braves won and all the Blacks were cheering for the Braves and wore Braves hats. MLB was bothered by the Black Hiphop culture that supports Atlanta music and Atlanta sports. These days there is a lot less Blacks at Yankee stadium. That was done for a reason. It's racism simple and plain!

The Red Sox used to use that sound effect as well, but I never liked it.
