“And I love you so”, “Susan when she tried” and “fairytale“ happen to be three of my all time favorite songs. And the Tiger Man jam also never seems to bore me out. Love most of the ‘75 recordings and shows.
Hated my time in high school.Bought the Today album during one of my low times and wow... To this day it's one of my favorite 70's studio recording albums. Helped me through a bad time as many Elvis albums often did (and do) and is among my most favorite 70s studio albums (Promised Land a close second) Thanks for another lovely video man!
Thanks for your comment Itamar, and thanks for watching. I also really like Promised Land. I think you’re right, his music does help change the way we are feeling.
I rank this album as one of my all time favourites. It's the whole package. Great songs. Great musicians. Great production. And beautiful singing, from the heart. Elvis always wore his heart on his sleeve. Just wish he'd produced more albums like this.
It always makes me smile when people say that the songs from some of these sessions and the albums they went up to make are ‘their favourites’, when I look back at some of the reviews they were given at the time of release, to say that some of the reviews (by fans) were very critical is an understatement!…Let me say here and now..I totally disagree and I disagreed back then too. The quality of these tracks and his delivery of them are superb. I really enjoyed this video Duncan. Thank you
Thanks for your comment Lesley. You’re absolutely right, there was a lot of criticism when the albums like Good Times, and Today first came out. Fans through the pages of Elvis Monthly were even pretty critical if I remembrances correctly. The tracks are so beautifully sung, with authentic emotion.
I would very much like you to discuss the aborted sessions of January 1977. As I understand it, there were also recording sessions scheduled for the first week of February 1977 at Graceland, where the band turned up, and Elvis came down to say that he didn't feel able to record, and that was that. Felton and RCA made the decision to record some songs on the March/April 1977 tours which ended up on Moody Blue. There weren't even enough songs to make up that album and they had to turn to a previously released song in Let Me Be There. If they were going to put a previously released song on there, why not a previously released studio song? They could have put Tiger Man on there. x
I’m just a marginal Elvis fan but your channel is so entertaining to watch. The attention to detail on this episode is impressive. I am looking forward to the next episode. I’ve watched all six now. Keep up the great work!
hello Duncan, I discovered your channel thanks to another channel where you sometimes intervene. the world of Elvis is great! I love Pieces of my life, when it comes to expressing feelings, emotion, Elvis is unstoppable. Bringin' it back and t.r.o.u.b.l.e. are among my favourites. 👋🇫🇷
Awesome Album, love all these songs. I find them all fantastic and not depressing at all just emotional and wonderful. Love it and your overview, thank you.
Great video again thank you, interesting that you find "Bringing It Back" as an upbeat rendition as I've always thought of it as a beautiful song looking back on a lost love with a tinge of sadness and regret. This album isn't one that I go to very often but having now watched your video I'm going to give it another spin or two with possibly a different frame of mind.
elvis today album cool true album great songs shake a hand” true great songs elvis today album Bringing it Back. love that song keep up cool video my friend
I think Elvis was fed up at this stage. He was well aware what a hit song sounded like, and all to aware that his demo pile was loaded with a whole lot of ordinary. To record a mere 10 songs between Dec 73 to feb 76 is a travesty from a man of Elvis' talent. People were still hungry for good Elvis product. In Great Britain, his 40 greatest hits album released at this time, became one of the UK's biggest selling albums of the decade and he was still very visible in the top ten singles charts with the likes of My Boy and Promised Land. And even when current material was becoming a rarity RCA, to their credit, poked around the vaults and gave Elvis another two top tenners in Suspicion and Girl of my best friend. So the appetite was there, and we are so grateful for what he gave us. My fav album is Elvis Country, this could have been Elvis Country II! Call it 'green green grass of home' and have a pic of his Tupelo home on the cover!
Interestingly I believe that RCA released the singles Suspicion, The Girl Of My Best Friend and also granted licence for the 40 Greatest here in the UK as the "Colonel" had just sold the rights to Elvis's back catalogue to RCA and therefore no royalties would be due to Elvis or The Colonel.
I purchased Today in 1993 and I remember playing it at my girlfriend’s house. It was a complete buzz listening to this album. Here in Australia we don’t get too much imported stuff, and this, when I saw it in the music store I looked at the back and saw all these songs I’d never heard before. As soon as I heard T R O U B L E, I was blown away. The whole album is just amazing. I have to agree, this would have to be his best 70’s album.
I had the Today album and Promised Land on 8-track which I got in 1982 on a vacation to Memphis when I was 15. I like the self titled/Fool album alot which I had on vinyl. Good Times is good. I had Raised On Rock on 8-track also but I thought it was lackluster. Today is probably my favorite of the 70s albums. I fell asleep to it somany nights with the headphones on in the early 80s. Pieces of My Life is also my favorite song on the album and I echo all the ways you described it. T-R-O-U-B-L-E and And I Love You So are also excellent.
It is a really great performance Steve, the vocal range required on that track and the breath control Elvis shows are amazing. These sessions as a whole are so good, a real high point! Thanks for watching.
This video clip is another great Elvis content LP review. I hold a biased opinion because the Today LP is one of my all-time-favourite studio LPs. I favour the 1970s recordings anyway, and I always return to 1975, 1976, and 1977 studio recordings when I need a good musical dose of our man. The selection of songs to my ears suggest Elvis was looking for good songs of the time period, you know, what they would refer to as Contemporary songs. The Publishing Industry was quite competitive in the 1970s as we learn from reading some of those "Elvis Stories," and Elvis Interviews. Elvis speaks to this subject during the press conference of June 9, 1972 before his concerts at Madison Square Gardens? Ok, everyone has their personal tracks from Today. My all-time-favourite track is, "Bringing It Back." I wish Elvis had added, "Shake A Hand" to his 1977 concert performances. I say it would have found a nice place next to songs like, Don't Be Cruel, Teddy Bear, Little Darlin', and Hound Dog? I strongly and absolutely agree with Duncan's superb comments during the video about the production: Elvis' voice sounded "pure" to my ears if that word makes any sense, when I consider to cite one example, the track, "Green, Green Grass of Home." I say Mr. Tom Jones recorded the best version. But, Elvis adds that "Elvis Musical Ingredient" which he always did. My 2nd favourite track from the Today LP is the song, "And I Love You So," and my all-time-favourite version is from the CBS TV Special Soundtrack: Elvis In Concert. Friends, have a listen to that live track when you have time. I love the sound effects Elvis uses at the closing notes of the song. Brilliant. T-R-O-U-B-L-E received many good reviews; particularily in the publication titled, "Elvis Illustrated" the 1982 Elvis book authored by Mr. Roy Carr, and Mr. Jamie Farr. I believe their claim to fame was during their employment with the N.M.E. [New Musical Express] published in the United Kingdom. I am attempting to recall by strictly memory. Please offer corrections if I am wrong."Susan When She Tried," is another great track which presents the pure sound of Elvis' voice. Thank you for the invitation to post my viewpoints about the LP. Please stay safe, and healthy Everyone. Cheers from London, Ontario, Canada.
Great video! I agree, Today is a great album and I would definitely rank it as one of the top 3 albums from the mid 70s. I would love to see a video about the aborted session in 77. Keep up the good work 😊👍
Hey Duncan, I really love this album and it's far from the down beat album that was said about it. I can help, I love this song and it's upbeat, I like the guitars on it as well, he sounds great, it's a strong vocal from him, he has no problem with upbeat songs. Pieces of my life is just wow !! He sings it with so much emotion, I like when you said about every word in that song. Its my favourite one too from that album, some others I really liked T.R.O.U.B.L.E again another up beat, it's fan !! Shake a hand Green green grass of home, I really love how he sings this and for me it's way better than Tom Jones version, I have to confess I'm not a Tom Jones fan. And Susan when she tried, quite country and we know he was great at country songs. Great album, on the legacy one I really enjoyed the undubbed versions, I think it's fabulous to hear Elvis and the band. The Nashville box sets last year I really love and being remastered as well. Xx
I do love the album very much, but my favorite ELVIS album from the 70's would have to be RAISED ON ROCK and a very close second would be Moody Blue his last album.
Guilty pleasure for me as well. Love the “Raised On Rock/For ‘Ol Times Sake” Lp and I love “If You Don’t Come Back”. “Are You Sincere” is a beaut and “Just A little Bit” is sexy Elvis. Ha
Thanks Francesco, I agree with you that the early 70s stuff is outstanding, and I feel that Today is the greatest of his later 70s albums. Thanks for watching!
Please do that aborted 1977 session vid please pal. The Elvis Today album both un-dubbed and as it came out is a good album. I still prefer Moody Blue, E.P.Boulevard, Promised Land & my fave Thats The Way it is before it, but better than all of the other 70s albums
Parker & Elvis wouldn't record any song unless they got 50% of a song that really hurts getting good songs ever thing wasn't parkers fault! In many ways parker was used as a escape goat for things Elvis did yes Parker did rip off Elvis but ELVIS was a grown man he could have done something about this Elvis liked the money too
Great topic the 77's session what happened? yes please explore in another video, thanks Dave
Fantastic! Very Interesting !
Thanks Harry!
Great channel Duncan. I'm in. Keep em' comin.
Thanks Roger, and thanks for watching!

Very enjoyable pod, agree with every word 👍

Some great tracks on today. A personal highlight for me is “ shake a hand”
I love ‘Shake a hand’ as well Dylan. All the songs from this session are good.
Great video. I've always liked Susan when she tried. Appreciate all you do

Interesting idea Scott. I do think a lot of the 70s albums lacked imagination with their cover artwork.

Bringing it Back.
Supernatural vocal performance
It is a really great performance Steve, the vocal range required on that track and the breath control Elvis shows are amazing.
These sessions as a whole are so good, a real high point!
Thanks for watching.
@SomeOldElvisGuy I particularly like his vocals on the lines ''Thinking in my Solitude, wondering 'bout your attitude.....

I do love the album very much, but my favorite ELVIS album from the 70's would have to be RAISED ON ROCK and a very close second would be Moody Blue his last album.

@@someoldelvisguy2331 my favorite song from that album is RAISED ON ROCK and a close second is the song THREE CORN PATCHES.
I love pieces of my life but I find it very sad
Hmmmm… His best 1970’s album is, of course,
Elvis Country.
#2) That’s The Way It Is
#3) On Stage
#4) MSG
#5) Today
Thanks Francesco, I agree with you that the early 70s stuff is outstanding, and I feel that Today is the greatest of his later 70s albums.

I think the tiger made version that Elvis done this session has got a Waylon Jennings feel about it
I do prefer the unedited on remixed versions of this album

Do you have the details of the aborted recording sessions of 1977 that were scheduled for Nashville.
