A year later, I'm watching this again, this is still one of my favorite videos and I am moving to Tokyo next month. The worlds a crazy place ya'll.
for me at home for dessert my mom always makes something with casava, taro or some other kind of starch. I just now realized a lot of desserts my mom makes (I'm cambodian) are are starchy or sticky and usually involves palm sugar and coconut milk. There's also a lot of things sticky rice is used in as well as glutinous rice flour. I think a lot of asian countries have their own version of mochi. In Cambodia it is filled with palm sugar and boiled so the sugar melts inside and topped with fresh coconut it's so good.
The traditional deserts in Israel are mostly pastries with nuts, dates, raisins, and syrup. But of special note is halva, a sweet made from sesame paste mixed with honey or sugar and other flavorings. It has a flaky texture and melts in your mouth. That sesame paste on the dango you ate probably tastes similar (but with a different texture).
I'm also very fond of malabi, a pudding made from cornstarch and milk/cream, flavored with rose water, and topped with a red syrup. It's very delicately sweet and melts in your mouth. Has a texture a bit like flan.

And since I'm also Turkish, here's some Turkish desserts, or the ones I know of. There's something called Baklava. It's super thin layers of filo dough with with walnuts inside, and on top you drizzle some sort of clear sugar water/syrup, which is DISGUSTINGLY sweet, which I personally hate. Every Turkish dessert or any other sorts of sweets are always ridiculously sweet, but some people like it. The only Turkish dessert I like is called tulumba tatlı. It's basically sweet fried dough(that has been through a piping bag with a star shaped tip, so it looks super cute in my opinion), soaked in sugar syrup, just like what you would drizzle over the Baklava. Any even though I said I don't like baklava and other Turkish sweets and desserts, I have grown to LOVE tulumba tatlı! I hope at least one or two read this and learned something new, cuz I think I just used 30-50 min. on this, haha! Love your videos Simon and Martina, I hope you are doing well in Japan
I live in the US, but my father's favorite dessert is rød grød med flød (my personal option is that he mostly just likes to say the words over and over)! I think it's delicious, but I've never made it with rice. Just simmered berries and rhubarb with a little sugar until they're mush, strained the juice and thickened it into pudding with cornstarch. It's really tangy and pretty strongly flavored that way. Oh, and I put whipped cream on top, too...best part...:)
So I've heard of that tongue twister-type phrase, and I think I've had the same thing in Germany! Rote Grütze, if I'm spelling it right. SO GOOD. Best with vanilla sauce. :D

No, the wagashi that they were eating were not supposed to be eaten with the leaves. There are some that you eat with the leaf though like Sakura Mochi, but the ones they bought were just for wrapping/decoration.
+Nijiko Carter ty for the clarification. I saw emmymadeinjapan's video a long time ago on wagashi and she ate a sakura mochi with a leaf and i was extremely worried they were doin it wrong for a second. Looks like they lucked out here lmao
Have had a tough week and binging your videos has helped a lot! ❤ I've been watching you guys for 5 years now and I have loved every single video. You basically got me through university. 😊 Also, your relationship is the one I want to build up with my boyfriend, the respect and love you have for each other is truly amazing. Thanks for being such inspiring people. 😘
When ever i feel lonely or bored i always watch simon n martina video, i felt like im hangging out with them ^^ thank u for making all this wonderful video 🦄🦄
Love the new videos! I showed your clips to my two sons when we were moving to Korea. We moved back to the states (Texas) almost 2 years ago. Now we homeschool, and I am using your videos with my oldest for geography when we cover Japan! So glad to see Martina doing well. I know she has good and bad days. Praying she finds the right treatment there in Japan!
In Scotland (the North East anyway) we have butteries which are also known as Rosie, they're flattish discs of extremely rich salted pastry/dough which has had a huge amount of butter folded into it. They go great with strawberry jam! There's also more of the candy/confectionery side with Lucky Tatties, which are discs of solid confectioners sugar coated in cinnamon to look like a potato or "tattie". The "lucky" part of the name comes from when they used to include little silver charms back in the 1950s :)
ooh that sounds so good! I'm scottish but from the south (nearish edinburgh) and I've never had lucky tatties before but i really want to try them! Do you know where they're sold?
+Pikachu Jaegar I found out about them when working in Paisley :) I worked in one of those dodgy American Candy stores with the pink and blue light up store sign and they sell them! (I say dodgy because they pay less than minimum wage) I found out the charm thing from a little old lady who bought a copious amount of Clove Rock :)
I like it when the dog is coming to them and they both say "such a pretty boy" at the same time! They are so in sync and now I want to try all the dessert because I'm deeply curious of the taste, even the bad one!
Oh, my gord! Simon's discriptions were priceless!!! And your editing to match it. So good. You guys are by far my all time favorite people!! I'm so excited to send you guys a package. Found way to much fun things to send.
Well, we have rice with milk "yep" its basically condensed milk with plain rice, we have Halwa, Mahalabia, Lugaimat. And alot lot more! You guys should try arab dessert they're amazing!! With Love from Dubai 💕💕💕💕
I am from Oklahoma and apparently our state dessert is pecan pie, which happens to be my favorite. Depending on who makes it and how much corn syrup they use, it can be suuuuper sweet. Diabetes by the slice.
Cinnamonbooty It's crazy! Born and raised here and have eaten pecan pie my whole life, but never knew it was the official dessert. 😂 You should google our "state meal" it's ridiculous but at the same time I'm like, "Yeah... that sounds legit." 😅
I love that you two are like twins. hubby and wife who's been together for so long becomes one...and it's nice to see that. 😘 yall get each other's jokes...🖒🖒🖒
When I saw Martina's happy face at the start of the video, I was like, "DANGOOOOOO... and daifuku! YUM!" When you hear the word "dango" in Japan, get ready for food magic. All Japanese food is magic to me, but for kids, and kids at heart, sweets are the most magical thing of all.
Traditional candy in Brazil are fruit bars like goiabada (guava candy) and bananada (banana candy), corn desserts like canjica, pamonha and cural, cakes (like brazilian carrot cake 😍), doce de leite (or Dulce de leche for you english-spanish speaking fellas), sweet rice porridge (arroz doce), coconut sweets like Maria mole (kinda like a long coconut marshmallows) and cocada, and most importantly: condensed milk desserts. 10/10. Here goes a list: beijinho, cajuzinho, olho de sogra, pudim, quindim, pavê (😍), brigadeiro and many, many others. I'm from the southeast region, so I'm not even close to finishing the brazilian candy list!
yep, My family is from Sao Miguel and and it's traditional for Azoreans too, with lemon and cinnamon, though if it were up to me it would have as much cinnamon as humanly possible :D
I'm Australian/Kiwi and in NZ we have a thing called lolly cake. It's basically just butter, sweetened condescended milk, crushed biscuits and these lollies shaped like Eskimos cut up and all mixed together to make a log that you set in the fridge. It tastes so sweet! We always had it at birthday parties when I was a kid ☺️ I think they also make a similar thing in Ireland!
@Simon and Martina I think the '"big black turd" is called "Ohagi". It's a sweet red bean dessert. BTW, there is a great anime called "Sousei No Onmyouji" where one of the main character's favorite food is Ohagi. Check it out!
I'm from Georgia and here desserts are quite different. We have Medogi which is like thin , delicious round biscuits made from cacao with special cream - Sgushoni and nuts between. We also have our most well-known desserts like Pelamushi and Churchkhela. Pelamushi is grape juice boiled to a point were it thickens while adding flour to it, so it has a jelly consistency. Churchkhela is like peanuts or nuts lined up on a string and then dipped in Pelamushi. Afterwards it dries and becomes the most delicious snack that will have you full in an instant
HANNAH, YOU'RE A DANGO! You guys, I laughed at this so hard that I cried uncontrollably, had to pause the video, and call my sister (who also thinks y'all are hilarious)... and then it took me 5 minutes to regain composure and communicate to her why I was cry-laughing and how she could achieve this beautiful emotion by watching this video. Golden!
"EAT THE LAKE" "IT TASTES LIKE FRESHNESS" "I DIDN'T POOP IN THE LAKE YET" "THE BIG TURD" Just a conversation I made from your quotes. Literally in chronological order. I love you guys. XD Also, why do you now what chlorophyll tastes like? And I would get distracted by puppies too. Desserts in Germany? Um, cakes. And more cakes. AND CAKES. MOTHERF*CKIN CAKES. But there's a difference! There's "Kuchen" which is usually translated to cake. And then there's "Torte" which translates to fancy cake... ... I'm not even kidding. That's what it says on the respectable translating website. Lol. "Torten" have a lot more cream and fruit and stuff, so they do actually look very fancy. An example would be the "Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte". Chocolate cake, with cream and cherries, usually with (a shit ton of) cherry liquor. In English it's called Black Forest Cake. I think. I'm sure you've heard of it :D
+Cynthia Essiambre were amazed at how many people speak English around here. It could just be our neighbourhood, but it seems like everyone is really good at English!
In the Philippines there is lecheflan (something similar to creme caramel), Biko (I'm not sure my self if i should consider this as a dessert but its a sweetened sticky rice topped with ubod (idk the english but it is sweetened coconut)) , Kalamay (again. not sure if it is a dessert but its a sticky rice cake usually topped with the sweetened coconut thing), taho (or i would like to call it as Soy pudding covered with vanilla caramel sauce and sago (the chilled version is a dessert but i dont know about the hot one) Halo Halo (Mixture of Ube (i think its purple yam) kaong, nata (sweetened coagulated coconut water) lecheflan, red beans, lanka (i forgot the others since it vary from place to place) then crushed ice then covered with a mixture of condensed milk and evaporated milk. there's a lot more. but i cant mention them since well they vary from place to place (we have like more than 7k islands and 3k of which is inhabited and most of them have different things )
It'd be easy to read incorrectly...the 'ka' character and 'ga' character are the same, except for a small set of two marks in the upper right...there are several instances of this but 'ka'->'ga' is extra hard because it already contains a small stroke in that corner. Compounded by the fancy brush 'fonts' you're likely to find in an old-fashioned store...
+Ziphyrr Yes. I was responding to merirusama, who was guessing the mistake was made because S&M are more familiar with Korean. I haven't studied Korean so I can't speak on that, but I have struggled with mistaking ka/ga in hiragana. I thought I'd put forth an alternate theory as to the cause.
The chlorophyll-y taste comes from the yomogi herb used in the wakashi! It's my favourite, with red bean paste filling or topping. I'm so glad you guys did an episode on Japanese sweets, they are incredible.
OMG How didn't I have known this channel before??? You two are so naturally funny, I totally want to be your bff now LOL I'm brazilian, so the one of the most famous desserts here is Brigadeiro, it's made of sugary chocolate powder, butter and condensed milk, it's very sweet but we totally love this! Love you guys, send kisses for Brazil pleeeeeeease
Being from Canada, as you probably know, we have many treats made with maple syrup. Such as maple toffee, which is basically boiled fresh maple syrup which is poured into snow then rolled on a stick. Maple syrup fudge is also very popular. In another vein we have bannock, which is a dough, wrapped around a stick, cooked in a fire and covered in fresh homemade jam. Yum :) Canada is a multi-cultural place so many of our traditional dishes correspond with other country's dishes, so there are many sweets not mentioned. I do love maple syrup though :)
Sweet using Anko(the bean jam)for are almost so.Senbei(rice cake) too.The Japanese sweet uses the agar(seaweed)not gelatin. Most of the Wagasi served at the Sado(tea ceremony)can eat vegan.
Some traditional treats in my country are buñuelos. They are rice flour stretched out like a pizza but cooked in oil and finished off with cinnamon sugar and they are usually made at home in large amounts. Also we make some sweet tamales during Christmas time
In Hong Kong we have mochi desserts too! But instead of the sauce or anko smothered ontop we usually have flavoured fillings. So the mochi can come in dry form or soup form. The dry mochi is usually filled with fresh mango or durian, and then the outside is rolled in dessicated coconut. The soup mochi is a lot softer, served with sweet ginger soup and inside usually has a liquidy sweet black sesame or peanut sauce.

After watching so so many videos of yours now, you are hands down my favourite youtubers. No question, you both are the best.
Also we don't have many sweets in Ireland but we do have desserts!
Irish Apple cake, Potato candies, Potato cake with Baileys, Brioche Bread and Butter Pudding, Fruit and Oatmeal Scones, Porter Cake, Lemon Pudding Tart, Guiness Cake, Soda Bread Pudding, Barmbrack.
The green stuff is not green tea but Yomogi and it looks like Fu-manju and the jelly like stuff with Mochi texture is probably Kudzu Mochi!
not Kudzu Mochi but Kudzu Manju
yess my favorite! yomogi mochi. i noticed they never ate the last two at the end... nooooooooooooooooo hahha
I feel like Simon is Erina from Shokugeki no Soma when describing the food...XD jumping in a lake, feeling refreshed, water dripping from face,a cottage...so vivid! You,sir, have a God Tongue#2 lol
and yessss Hana Yori Dango was actually pleasant to watch!(I read the manga and watched the anime. Couldn't get into the live action...) Stepping out....~
dont you eat it woth the leaf??
you do.
Yup
No, the wagashi that they were eating were not supposed to be eaten with the leaves. There are some that you eat with the leaf though like Sakura Mochi, but the ones they bought were just for wrapping/decoration.
+Nijiko Carter ty for the clarification. I saw emmymadeinjapan's video a long time ago on wagashi and she ate a sakura mochi with a leaf and i was extremely worried they were doin it wrong for a second. Looks like they lucked out here lmao
Thought it was only if it was a pickled leaf...
Have had a tough week and binging your videos has helped a lot! ❤
I've been watching you guys for 5 years now and I have loved every single video. You basically got me through university. 😊
Also, your relationship is the one I want to build up with my boyfriend, the respect and love you have for each other is truly amazing. Thanks for being such inspiring people. 😘

yay ! :D I also put some facts here and there ;)
It's much appreciated :D
I grew up in mexico. So my favorite candy was always tamarindo based. or covered in Chile powder.
or for dessert we would eat tres leches or flan.
you should try 'Son Halwa' and fresh 'gulab jamun'. they are very popular desserts from Pakistan.
these two are a blast to watch!
The green chlorophyll-tasting one is probably "yomogi” or Japanese Mugwort.
This is only like the 3rd or 4th video I've seen from y'all, but I'm already in love with your dynamic and humor. So glad I found this channel!!
+ta daaa fantatic!!! Welcome to our channel! Hi I'm Martina :)
5 years later and I still wanna try all these treats :(
In Scotland (the North East anyway) we have butteries which are also known as Rosie, they're flattish discs of extremely rich salted pastry/dough which has had a huge amount of butter folded into it.
Rowies*
OMG that sounds so amazing!! I want to visit Scotland so badly!!
Whenever i take asians to sample scottish food they dub scones the choking cakes! lol
ooh that sounds so good!
Yellow blob wrapped in leaf XD
I'm new here, and I like this so far lol I shall subscriiiiiiibe :V
That would be mochi of mango flavour.
That Pocahontas cover though...

Oklahoma represent!! I live here too~
Stuffyluffy Oh heyyyy! I get overly excited when I run into other people in Oklahoma in the comment sections of my fave youtuber's videos. lol!
Woah, its so weird seeing others from Oklahoma in the comment section! Oklahoma represent haha! Also I had no idea about the pecan pie! 😮
Cinnamonbooty It's crazy! Born and raised here and have eaten pecan pie my whole life, but never knew it was the official dessert. 😂 You should google our "state meal" it's ridiculous but at the same time I'm like, "Yeah... that sounds legit." 😅
Oklahoma squadddd
I'm from the southeast region, so I'm not even close to finishing the brazilian candy list!
never forget brigadeiro, the best thing ever invented :)
I think it's safe to say that any Portuguese speaking nation makes arroz doce hahaha :)
bunnyday Really? I didn't know thata hahaha
yep, My family is from Sao Miguel and and it's traditional for Azoreans too, with lemon and cinnamon, though if it were up to me it would have as much cinnamon as humanly possible :D
Does "olho de sogra" mean "mother-in-law's eye"? It sounds like a sweet revenge to me!
I'm from Scotland and our traditional desserts tend to consist of deep fried chocolate bars. I'm not lying.
Hi I'm new to your channel the first time I watch your video I was so amazed so I sub and now I'm in love with your channel keep it up❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘😉
Oh hi! Welcome to our channel! Thank you for subscribing as well :D
I have to admit, I do love the way Simon describes all the snacks!! You guys made me giggle, good job with the video!!!
@Simon and Martina I think the '"big black turd" is called "Ohagi". It's a sweet red bean dessert. BTW, there is a great anime called "Sousei No Onmyouji" where one of the main character's favorite food is Ohagi. Check it out!
Big Raven benio made it famous ahahhaha ohagi ohagi taberu ???
I love you two! Watching an smiling from Berlin/Germany:-).
Here in sweden mixing things with salt and liquorice is very popular, espcieally mixing liquorice with salt.
Golden!
"EAT THE LAKE"
"IT TASTES LIKE FRESHNESS"
"I DIDN'T POOP IN THE LAKE YET"
"THE BIG TURD"
Just a conversation I made from your quotes. Literally in chronological order. I love you guys. XD
Also, why do you now what chlorophyll tastes like?
KNOW. WHY DO YOU *KNOW*
You forgot: "IT'S JUICIN' ALL OVER THE PLACE!"
Duchesse de Berne My bad XD
DROP EVERYTHING ! MUST PET DOG!
PETTING DOG IS MOST IMPORTANT
+Simon and Martina I totally agree!
I have 3 dachshunds and a chihuahua Dachshunds ftw!
SAME! Cat or Dog..Must pet!
DEEP FRIED OREOS BECAUSE AMERICA LOL....
dont forget the deep fried butter!! cus yeah..this exists..
DEEP FRIED CHOCOLATE COVERED STRAWBERRIES GIVE ME LIFE
They have deep fried watermelon, haven't tried it, but it exists.
And the deep fried ice cream!
+Terra J deep fried kool-aid is a thing
I've been so in love with this channel. Favorite video to date
Im new to your channel but can I just say, it is amazing!!!! You two have become a daily watch for me now! Thank you for such amazing content!!!
do a lot of people speak english? the puppy lady seemed to speak english very well
+Cynthia Essiambre were amazed at how many people speak English around here. It could just be our neighbourhood, but it seems like everyone is really good at English!
The yellow one definitely looked like Gudetama without the egg white lol
the green one is mugwort
Lol! We need more food segments with SImon giving all sorts of poetic and interesting descriptions of food!
I love when "Love is the Moment" is inserted every time there is a k-drama moment that happens to you guys lmao
No one cares about philippines k?
Guys, I think you mean wagashi instead of wakashi! Or am I wrong?
yeah right it is wagashi ! maybe since they learned korean before they now mistake the K and G :D
yap, kashi means normally snacks. but combining with wa(和) means Jpapanese, i will become a syllable.
It'd be easy to read incorrectly...the 'ka' character and 'ga' character are the same, except for a small set of two marks in the upper right...there are several instances of this but 'ka'->'ga' is extra hard because it already contains a small stroke in that corner. Compounded by the fancy brush 'fonts' you're likely to find in an old-fashioned store...
...er, that's in hiragana (phonetic 'spelling'), which is what they'd probably be reading.
When I hear dango, I think of Clannad.
ohhh... yessss It reminds me of that song "dango dango dango" at the end
are you the same person who upload the KN?
totally 😀
Same though I never finished the series
Dango dango. ...daikazoku 🎶🎶 :) it was one of the first anime s I've ever watched(back then somebody should`ve warned me off T.T )
The chlorophyll-y taste comes from the yomogi herb used in the wakashi! It's my favourite, with red bean paste filling or topping. I'm so glad you guys did an episode on Japanese sweets, they are incredible.
"IT HAD MANGO AND THEN KANJI"
I freaking LOVE Simon & you too Martina
OMG How didn't I have known this channel before??? You two are so naturally funny, I totally want to be your bff now LOL
I'm brazilian, so the one of the most famous desserts here is Brigadeiro, it's made of sugary chocolate powder, butter and condensed milk, it's very sweet but we totally love this! Love you guys, send kisses for Brazil pleeeeeeease
Marcela Regina Santos I've heard of this! I've been dying to make it but haven't got around to it. I'm English by the way 😂
AUSTRALIAN DESSERTS: Pavlova, Lamingtons, Vanilla Slice, Caramel Slice, Fairy Bread, Sticky Date Pudding!
um.. in America.. we have a traditional sweet called skittles.. (we're boring AF)
Yum :)
Canada is a multi-cultural place so many of our traditional dishes correspond with other country's dishes, so there are many sweets not mentioned. I do love maple syrup though :)
its always fun to watch you guys
和菓子=わがし wagashi
It sounds like you're in Animal Crossing. :) x
do they have a lot of vegan food in japan? :)
there are some but not so many..
You should look sharlainjapan or taylor they have some vidoes about vegan food and places in japan (they're both vegan)
Sweet using Anko(the bean jam)for are almost so.Senbei(rice cake) too.The Japanese sweet uses the agar(seaweed)not gelatin. Most of the Wagasi served at the Sado(tea ceremony)can eat vegan.
Actually I've never found a vegan restaurant in Japan.
And also I've seen only a few vegans among Japanese people.
I'm not too sure. We found a vegetarian (possibly vegan?) restaurant closeby, and we're going to try it out soon :D
@1:01 Martina has the same hat as those kindergarten kids. How cute!
Wagashi designs are seasonal and I love looking at them.
hana yori dango is my fav anime ever!! obsessed with it so glad it was mentioned never gets any love.
Dango dango dango dango dango daikazoku....
Simon and Martina's video always make me so happy !!!!
Some traditional treats in my country are buñuelos. They are rice flour stretched out like a pizza but cooked in oil and finished off with cinnamon sugar and they are usually made at home in large amounts. Also we make some sweet tamales during Christmas time
martina! your eye makeup looks so beautiful in this video, with the colours under your eyes- it suits you so well!
