Totally agree with Dr. Heiser here. I would also point out though, that if you are even defining your relationship to sin as “a struggle” at all, paradoxically, that ought to give you some level of comfort. A person whose heart is far away from God does not look at their sin as “sin”. It isn’t a battle at all. Those people are content with their life of sin, and can even consider it good.

As Heiser says “ It is NOT performance based if it were we would be putting God in OUR debt.” Meaning He would owe us something. Of course we do our best to be obedient and not grieve God although we will never be sinless. Blessings to u

The sober alcoholic remains sober as long as they abstain from alcohol.

All sin is common to man. Nothing is new under the sun. But the Saints of God are to live by the power of grace.
Dead men don't sin; those in Christ died with Christ. But the flesh must be addressed & reckoned "daily"

Here's the scripture that irritates many great Baptist folk because it mentions being holy.
Paul tells us And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. "How great is that"

@1new-man the problem is that the bible is mistranslated. 1946themovie proves the Bible is not anti-gay. Jesus said in Matt 19:11-12 there are THREE types of "Eunuch". Not just castrated slaves. The context is marriage to women. What kind of man is born in such a way he doesn't want to marry a woman? Anti-gay and anti-choice are ANTI-CHRIST lies. Matthew 7, Romans 2? The church is lost today to bigotry on the right and idolatry on the left. 2Thess2:11 is here. The church is fallen. Trump is lawless. Jesus is coming soon but most will be left behind because of bigotry and idolatry. Rev 13:11-16 is America. Two horns "like a lamb"? Who's the Lamb? Jesus! We think we're a Christian nation, we're NOT. Compare Exodus 13:16, Rev 13:16 & Matt 5:29. The Mark of the Beast is SIN. The only way to wash it off is faith in the blood of Jesus. We MUST follow His law. 1John3:23 sums up Christianity. Sadly, most Christians live in 1John4:20. I pray God helps you see. ❤

God's Love never changes, that should never be up for debate. BUT!! if We Love Him!! "Our Choices" should be aligned with The Word. There should be abstaining from sexual immorality, idolatry/un"faithful"ness; Trusting in anything, or anyone else other than God. When you truly believe something you will die for it, or else it's a mere preference, or an opinion. He wants a faithful bride, not one being unfaithful whoring with the world. If we love the world and its ways then the Love of the Father is not in us.

The contrast being that not only can't God be bought, He doesn't even want you to try -- moving in was free, and there is no rent. Jesus bought the apartment and invited you to move in, so just enjoy it and concentrate on what shows you appreciate it (show your loyalty, as Dr. Heiser might say).

He is correct that only Jesus can give us eternal life through his blood.
    However
When you turn to Christ you should also have a change of heart. You are supposed to fight against sin and not embrace it.
Fighting against sin means that you are following the road to Christ, you might stumble & fall down on the way but you allways come back up and keep following it.
Embracing sin means that you stop following the road to Christ and you catch a glimpse of a forest. You abandon your original goal becuase you like the sound of the birds coming from the forest and you start walking towards it. Deeper and deeper you go and after a while you start remembering that you were following the road to Christ but there is one problem, you have no idea where you ended up and how you get back to the road. That is how sin works.
Following Christ means that you hate sin becuase you know that your Lord hates it and it leads you away from the Lord.

So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.
But you did not learn Christ in this way, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.
Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.
Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity.
He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need.
Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
    - Ephesians 4:17-30

It is kind of puzzling that a man who knows the Bible who give such an inaccurate statement. The Bible says that while we were sinners, Christ died for us. But it also said, that our body died as he died so that we are no more slaves of this body, of this flesh. We are now new creatures that are slave of righteousness. If you continue sinning, then we are under God's wrath.

Yes God loves us all whether we are saved, or not and always will love us. But once we are saved are we not supposed to have faith with works, God does not want to use us, it is expected of us to let God use us to do his will! James 2 -17 . Simple believing in Jesus and that he died for our sins isnt enough.
Yes, we are all sinners, but are we not supposed to try be like christ ? Yes we sin, but we ask for forgiveness with true remorse, how does one continue to commit the same sin day after day and ask for forgiveness but put zero effort into not committing that same sin again? Yes, we will always sin, but some, effort has to be put towards not committing the same sins over and over day after day. Jesus will always love us, but for us to follow the most important AND GREATEST commandment
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭22:37‭-‬40‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[37]  ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ [38] This is the first and greatest commandment.
We need faith with deeds and to be doing our absolute best to live our lifes the way Jesus expects us to!

The way I understand it is that works are faith and are done through us with the holy spirit. These "works" aren't ours, but they are Gods. So we shouldn't be so concerned about works. James works are a sign that a fellow believer is actually faithful, if you see a supposed Christian cuss and lie constantly you could draw some conclusions about how faithful they are. However sometimes faith can save absent of works with examples like the thief on the cross or the women at the well.

I will do everything in my power to make those exiled know you love them and want them in your kingdom. They are redeemable by the precious blood of Christ like everyone else guilty of other sins. True that God loves all souls, but because of our free will, He is not responsible for our actions therefore they must be accounted for in the next life so reincarnation which Jesus also taught us is a fact, especially detailed in the Vedic scriptures such as the Bhagavad-Gita which explains how we are to act in order to please God & attain the Kingdom. We must elevate ourselves from attachments to the body which we are trapped in. Those who have not attained such detachment cannot possibly end up in the same place as those who have practiced this principle. That’s why many will have to reincarnate until they have reached that pure state of detachment which you can only attain by regular practice of chanting the holy names of God. Then you will already feel His presence for the kingdom is inside of you already as Jesus teaches in the Gospel of Thomas. This is all so clear in the Bhagavad-Gita as it is by: A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. ❤❤❤

God is love and if LG TV+ people knew God, they would love the way He designed them to be. It is no more complicated than that. You have nothing to apologize for if someone wants to pervert God's creation. Doesn't look like there is any wiggle room in this passage either.
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 "Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom."

We ‘re all eternal souls. The problem is that you have to act on your belief, it’s not enough just to believe then act in a contrary way to the principles of spiritual life. In the Vedas (Veda means to know), the most ancient holy scriptures on this Earth it says that we are all responsible for our actions and because we’re all eternal souls, when we pass out of the temporary body, we will then acquire our next life according to our actions & mentality, not only our beliefs. I see it as a great disservice to mankind that Christians always say belief is enough when it isn’t actually. To believe without the corresponding actions & lifestyle isn’t going to cut it with Jesus. Many will be disappointed once they find this out after leaving the body. To believe without the actions to go with it makes you a hypocrite doesn’t it?

Many verses suggest that once we are saved we become a new creature in Christ - and I think this may be getting misinterpreted to mean we become *sinless* while STILL in the flesh, which is what torments so many young Christians...
I think the wording may be what's key here: *"inherit the kingdom of God"* - in that, by grace are we saved, yet we WILL ALSO be judged by our works...
In my Father's house are many mansions...
Or IOW, to "reign with Christ" is not synonymous with being saved - or "getting into" heaven.

Confession is to own it; but telling an honest judge that your sorry for breaking the law won't set you free
The judge will say You should be sorry Now the fine must be paid!
No honest judge will let you off the hook with an apology
And you can bet neither will Holy God Righteous Judge when we appear before him.
If at all genuinely honest this should keep you awake at night,
You've got Gods word to prove it; at judgment the books will be open and your life will back it up!
The Bible says So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be ((good or bad))
Sin we own it Jesus bought it that's what he did on that cross. What we must do is turn from our unbelief
and trust Christ finished work of the cross like you would trust a parachute.
In other words repentance in Hebrew means to change your way of thinking; renew your mind "daily"
Let go of unbelief; and receive Gods gift of Jesus unto salvation.
Faith is belief with wings anchored in "How" Christ died for died sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried and that he he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: It is complete; finished
Because Jesus paid it all; And that changes everything!

If you run a stop sign or do a rolling stop you are breaking a law that has authority that is derived by the ultimate authority of God so you are sinning. There are sooooo many things like that. If it is not simple as to explain to a child then it’s not the saving gospel. I have been struggling a lot lately and doing my share of crying and anguish to the point of being suicidal. This is not an easy subject. And if I am heartbroken and sincere and trying my best to be humble and I love mercy and justice then why do I feel so lost ? I mean seriously I do so much research and praying. I only want to be led by the spirit. I’m a dad of 3 children under 7 and am married to a wonderful woman and am very blessed. And even still I have so many questions and anguishes. And I am definitely not tech savvy so I don’t know how to see if anyone responds to this lol. Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: You R Saved all sin forgiven & forgotten past present and future.
      Remember Jesus did not die of heart attack; nor did he drown walking across the water with Peter;
Without controversy Our faith is anchored in how Christ died; How he freely surrendered his life by shedding his ((blood)) for the remission and forgiveness of our sin. Christ took our place on that cross in order to pay our debt before God; a debt he didn't owe at a price we could never pay; ((Paid in full))
Therefore put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Christ saved us from sin not to sin and when we do sin Christ died one time 4 all sin past present and future.
Not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. Not perfection but heavenly direction looking to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Jesus says repent and believe or ye will perish; The Hebrew meaning of repent is to "renew" your mind daily
fresh from the word.Take out the trash daily. The evil one knows when you renew your "mind"
God will change your heart. That's why Satan will distract you from cracking that Bible.
Sin will keep you from Gods word and Gods word will draw you away from sin.

And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, That same oxygen from heaven belongs to all who will repent receive and believe the Gospel.
That "Good News" will part the red sea in your life and will also enter the upper room of your heart.

Temptation itself isn't sin. Acting on the temptation and following it is. When we stumble, we repent. Repentance is continual in the life of a Christian. Many folks who struggle/have struggled with this issue in their history at some point have taken their identity from it as the culture would have them. When we are in Christ, we are a new creation. We have a new identity and it is wrapped up in HIM. We do best not to think of ourselves that way.
Is it ok to be real and say, I struggle with X,Y,Z? YES, and it is helpful for others to be able to minister and pray with you. Is it wise to say I am this type of person? Not really. Not useful, not beneficial, and I would even say in Christ, TRULY IN CHRIST-- it is a lie. Look here even as Paul discourages the Corinthians backsliding, while affirming who they are called to be: "Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God."
Who you formerly were is not who you are in Christ. Be wrapped up in Him, put on Christ. We will deal with the flesh until we go home, but we are called to live in the Spirit. We need a close, intimate relationship with God to live that out. God is more than willing! Christ gave his life that you may have life abundantly. Eternal life begins the moment you first believe.

      @@davel4811 Yes that's my point.
When people justify their sin and even call it a good thing they are lost.
Lets say we have a gay person in our church who is still active.
They know it's a sin but they have not over come it but are trying then we must continue to encourage them.
My point would be is this.
Just because they are still participating in a gay relationship does not mean they aint born again and God is working with them.
By the way God does not work on every sinful practice at the same time.
Rather He has a plan to eradicate our sins and our job is to focus on the sin God is working with us to eradicate.
OLE JIBJOB the Christian sees a sinful behavior that they are offended with in a brother is sister and decides and decides that they need to work on that particular sin.
If the person admits it's a sin and it needs to be dealt with then all is good, if they make excuses for that sin then thats a red flag.
For some reason being gay is the most hideous sin in the world.
I would put domestic violence and control on a much higher level of sin.
Being gay is not the worst sin in the world but many Christians seem to act like it is.

There is another difference, and that is the degree of hardening of the heart. While grace is freely available to all, and sins are not graded on a curve, the sins do differ in how their continuation tends to impede the will to repentance. It is surely easier for a murderer to repent than it is a homosexual because most murderers understand that they have committed wickedness, at least in the eyes of man.

However, if someone is deeply concerned they have commited this sin and truely have a repentant heart and willingness to live by faith, they have not commited this sin. But if one does commit such a sin, there is no redemption for them in Christ. Apostasy is a good example (thinking Brandon Roberts here).

I'm not sure how the increase of human depravity and sin is contradictory to the variety of the concept of sin across cultures. There is no universal culture besides what you could call a general human behavior.
I understand how you can say that one sin can lead to another. But all sins can do that. Theft as a parent can teach the child that theft is the way to live and cause them to stray from God, and continue the cycle. It's easy to construct all sorts of hypotheticals.
Law codes and their severity of punishment do not have a direct correlation, if any, to the severity of sin anymore even if they once did. Otherwise you'd have to repent for blowing a stop sign at an empty intersection.
My main point is that I'm looking for a justification to believe that these, while extreme and repulsive, sinful acts will merit worse divine punishment in this life or the next. If they are worse sins but do not merit worse punishment, specifically by God, not by people, then it is worse only in a descriptive, technical sense.

The issue of homosexuality being an “elite sin” comes from the repeated claims from the homosexual “Christian” community that:
    1) The Bible does not openly condemn homosexuality (Yet prohomosex authors such as Via and Hays dare to disagree with their prohomosex mentor John Boswell and readily admit Paul was clear in saying homosexual behavior is a sin)
    2) God made me this way and God is to be blamed or at least asked why he made me a sinner
    3) I can continue in unrepentant sin and be saved
    4) God loves everyone and moral relativism is accepted by God unto salvation.
    5) God is only love and He does not judge.
One saying they are trapped by sin and can do nothing about it in order to justify their continued sin is not what God had in mind. If pedophiles claimed that their actions are allowed while undergoing sanctification we would all be appalled. If murderers claimed they can continue to murder, who would agree with that?
But many homosexual “Christians” claim just that about themselves. THEIR sin is elite and different and not to be judged because of biological reasons. Ignoring the facts that these sins are more common when under the influence or weekend partying. Biology changes during the week I guess.
Israel was judged for homosexual immorality around the Asherah poles and they were not saved but judged. His prior stated positions such as Mormons are saved because of their belief in God ignores the point that correct belief in who God Is and His plan of redemption outside of works or continued unrepentant sin shows a serious disconnect that I must take into account when listening to him.
The world says: “we are who we are by what we are tempted by-therefore give into your temptation and celebrate it”
God says: “We are who we are by how we react to temptation. “
    The world says: “come out.”
God says: “Come Out from the world and be Holy for I Am Holy”
I must disagree with Dr Heiser on this one. May you rest in Peace with the Lord.

Struggling for the assurance of salvation and not walk in condemnation. However, I know I’m my heart and by the Word… there is no condemnation to those who are covered in His blood and acknowledge their need. @@metatoutaThere are two general stereotypes of Christian’s confronting SSA. Those who take the approach that they are prideful in their being for their actions. And those who humbly confront their SSA with varying degrees of success.
The error of the church is addressing both of these general stereotypes with the same response. Condemnation. Generally because the church feels threatened. Also for lack of understanding and compassion.
Yes, the church must call out sin. Yet the church must provide compassionate support through accountability support groups. It would be the same for alcoholics or others tormented by a specific sin. One facing such torment cannot do so alone. Finding a church that is out of balance on either side of the general stereotypes is also not the answer.
The Bible is quite clear that sex was a blessing from God between heterosexuals in marriage. Sex is not a right. It is a blessing that can be lost through sin by both heterosexuals and homosexuals and regardless, unfortunately, of the origin of the sin. That is the reality of the fallen world we live in.
To anyone facing SSA and humbly doing their best to resist temptation I suggest you read a book by an English Pastor named Sam Allbery and entitled “Is God Anti-Gay.” He has fought SSA for decades and I believe has made clear the path one must follow who has SSA.
Specifically he states: “God’s message for gay people is the same as his message for everyone. Repent and believe.”
He continues: “It is the same for us all-“whoever.” I am to deny myself, take up my cross and follow him. Every Christian is called to costly sacrifice. Denying yourself does not mean tweaking your behavior here and there. It is saying “no” to your deepest sense of who you are, for the sake of Christ. To take up a cross is to declare your life (as you have known it) forfeit. It is laying down your life for the very reason that your life, it turns out, is not yours at all. It belongs to Jesus. He made it. And through his death he has bought it.”
I believe anyone who has SSA and can deny themselves and follow Christ will be richly rewarded. Those who practice their SSA in pride will not be.
PS. I should have made clear that my prior post was directed towards those who pridefully deny their culpability. It was not directed against those who humbly battle against SSA. I pray you can find a church scripturally balanced in its approach to SSA and that you can provide Biblically sound support to others with SSA. Be that support.

The Bible continually refers to “the greater sin” and while sin is sin some are definitely worse than others.

@@ngkngk875 I don't agree with homosexuality or any other sin that Jesus tells us about. Just like He says, not one yod or tittle will drop from the law until all is fulfilled. What I was saying is that grooming can happen in all ways, not just homosexuality.

Homosexuality is a natural expression of human sexuality. If there’s a conflict between that and religion, ditch the religion.
I always suspected Heiser to be one of those kind of religious folk, but good to see him confirm it.

another Dr Mike fallacy. those publicizing these videos continuously show how Mike is wrong with his philosophy. He does say your type of sin does not disqualify but never says if you don't repent of sins will disqualify. sad.

I am very aware that there is no elite sin... however, how do we reconcile what Dr Heiser asserts here with Paul's writing to the Corinthians:
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor [a]homosexuals, nor [b]sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were [c]sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

Paul’s point is that none of us can get into Heaven without accepting Jesus as our Savior. Since all of us sin, and cannot possibly stop sinning as long as we are in these fleshly bodies, then we all MUST accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. Doesn’t mean that we can’t ever sin in order to be saved, otherwise Heaven would be empty!

We are justified by our belief in Jesus, not by our feeble attempts to reach a sinless state of being. Belief is all that is needed! Faith alone saves!

Perhaps there is a difference between people who continually practice those particular sins to the point that it has become their identifying characteristic and those who may commit those sins from time to time but repent.

I think that verse 11 probably produces your answer. For the one with faith in Christ, even if there is a struggle with one of those sins after regeneration, you are still washed and justified as a new creation. As John said 1 John 2:1 "My little children, these things write in unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous". We should be thankful that he is there, advocating for us in our imperfection, living to intercede for us constantly (Heb. 7:25).

@@highlander-jb6jv Perhaps, but that doesn’t mean that people who are “living in sin” aren’t saved. That’s why we shouldn’t judge others. Only God knows who His saved souls are.
