At about 2:04, Bob Griese says that if Frazier goes down Nebraska can’t win the natty. Turns out the Frazier being out for the year inspired needed defensive improvement. Defense wasn’t great in this game and next 2 games
I remember this team so well. I loved Schlesinger. Always called him "Cory Schlesinger, the man with no neck." He was one of a long string of great Nebraska fullbacks.
I was at that game. When they cued it up, Husker Nation approved of it immediately (i.e. went bat-crap crazy). My cousin graduated UNL in 1970-71. He was sitting North Stadium for this game. When the Tunnel Walk cued up, he actually started crying.
Did you know. UCLA was ranked #13 here and after this loss, proceeded to lose the next 5 games and finish unranked. #22 WA St held UCLA scoreless the next game, 21-0. This game w Neb was one of the games in the silly 60-3 run.

It was right before the Bowl Alliance, which was right before the BCS. It was the committee that determined the bowl match-ups at the end of the season. It was around for a few years but they wanted a true #1 vs #2 in one of the four big bowl games (Orange, Fiesta, Sugar and Rose) but because of the Big Ten and Pac-10 commitment to the Rose Bowl, we didn't get that until the BCS came into the picture. None of the committees prior to the Playoffs were very successful.
