  • In this video I talk about how frustrating it is to customize/work on the Gerber Flatiron. Wanted also to give the knife community a heads-up on purchasing Flytanium scales for the Flatiron! Hope this video helps!👍

Use 99% rubbing alcohol and keep adding drops on the screws to let it soak in and break up the locktite. (Brake cleaner will also break it down)

I wish this video was available several months ago. I bought the copper flytanium scale for my flatiron. I started at the pivot and the first attempt to easily remove it resulted in completely destroying the pivot screw. Totally stripped and didn’t put a whole lot of force on it because I was ready to use the heat gun/soldering iron on it. Sent Gerber a few emails asking to buy a new pivot with no response from them at all.

That's unfortunate, I had the same issue when I emailed them too, no response!
I don't know why they can't calm down with the lock-tite! I hope they do something about it or I'll just have to get myself a Civivi Bullmastiff! 😉

My flatiron g10 with the 7cr17Mov hasn’t got any issues undoing the screws. I was quite surprised as I had read a lot about modding the knife, and expected the worst. I guess I got lucky. My flatiron came in a clamshell type packaging, from a larger outdoor sports/activity type chain store (‘Anaconda’ in NSW, Australia) maybe that explains it...🙂

@@KnathansKnivesjust found my old comment on your vid here! Enjoying your vids at the moment. I will confirm I have had pain with stripping screws on my newer gerber zilch, since my old, old comment, but that’s an even cheaper knife, with torx screws that seem to be in between sizes of wiha brand bits?! Very weird. The tolerances are just crappy with some gerbers, no issues with others, and it seems to be an all round random quality issue with gerber in general.
Anyhow, I wish you all the best with your further video’s and knife mods. I’m loving your channel currently. Take care and stay sharp🔪👌

I just bought one at walmart the other day(not the d2 one) and it must've been dropped cause it was gouged up on both ends and also the blade wasn't even near being centered, but I bought it anyways just to play with. First thing I did was to attempt to center the blade, I was expecting the worst as I started twist the pressure on the pivot screw with my micro screwdiver... and BAM!, easy to turn... lolol! So were the other screws! No shit! Long story short, I believe I got the only one in existence without loctite... lol

I’ve had 4 flatirons of varying types over the last few years and 2 were stupid easy to disassemble (including my d2 version) and older versions I had were glued shut. Just a qc thing. Gerber sells more flatties than paraframes at this point from what I’ve heard. So there are bound to be a few rough ones out of a few thousand per batch

When I customized my own personal Flatiron I was able to take it all apart except for one barrel spacer. I tried everything, so I bought a doner knife to borrow hardware from, which turned out to be impossible to take apart. Luckily I was able to take one barrel spacer off to use on my Flatiron. I tried the same thing on my customers knives but no luck. I even tried emailing Gerber to get some extra hardware but no response, it's just a bummer is all.

@@KnathansKnives as far as imports are concerned, Gerber may not be able to help you. I’ve had luck with domestic (their American made products) before. I will say that all those companies are either working from home or are understaffed due to the coronavirus. I had a warranty run in with sog (who aren’t far from Gerber) and they were all working from home and that with the combination of everything else has made it hard for the companies to respond. I have a few contacts from various companies so I get a bit of an inside scoop. Sorry to hear about your flatiron man!

@@hunterglaspell5580 Makes sense, Covid is definitely affecting a lot of businesses.
The only solution I can come up with is buying a lathe and creating some of my own parts(expensive though)😉
No worries about my Flatiron, I was bummed that I couldn't customize the customers knives after I said I could. Once I get more tools I won't be limited if I run into issues, I just have to be patient.🙂
