Pura magia ~ Michael
Together with jordi savalls interpretation one of the most beautiful stuff on da gamba i heard so far. Bowing technic and sense for colours is just beautiful...
Does anyone know the name of the venue? It reminds me the beautiful barroque churchs we still have in Mexico. Masterfull interpretation. I wonder if Johanna has given concerts in my country. If not, hope she will soon.
I don't know if you can answer my question... But, I've been playing Bass and Guitar for about 15 years, but as a hobbie, it is not my job... I'm a Cook, and because of that, I hurt my hand and now i have some limitations in my right hand... It does'nt gets in the way of playing Bass or Guitar that much... But I recently started to play the Cello... And the way we hold the bow on the Cello hurts so much, because of my injury. So, I saw some videos showing the Bow Techinique from the Viola da Gamba, and I tried to use it, with my Cello Bow... And it is much more confortable... Do you know if i can play the Cello properly using that kind of Bow Techinique? Cause my professor said I should not invest much effort on it, but I found it to be really confortable for me.
Hi Daniel, the underhand grip was used by some cellists pre 1800 but nowadays no cellist uses it (unless perhaps they are trying to be historically accurate for a particular piece). Have a look at www.jsbachcellosuites.com/bowhold.html. If you want to bow underhand you should look to switching to viola da gamba or maybe the double bass if you want to play an orchestral instrument.
If you find it more comfortable to bow underhanded then do it. Unless you’re going to be a grand concert cellist it really doesn’t matter. it’s merely a stylistic thing. I’ve seen the same virtuosic pieces demonstrated overhand and underhand by a cellist that also plays the viola da gamba. Do what is physically more comfortable.

Dear Daniel, this is a beautiful church in Aracena, Andalucia, Spain! Hoping to come to Mexico some day 🤞🏻

Look at this page ... especially at the description of the Christofer Shetky bow grip
Does anyone know where I could purchase a quality viola da gamba?
Good luck with that. They are available but for $$$
Hi, check at a luthier business in your home city, viola da gamba are made to order, they are not sold in musical instruments business unfortunately.
Churches do have a use then!
