      One way you can think that dragons once existed, because long ago there was more oxygen in the air, so most species were (a lot) bigger than they are today. This could also be the case with the reptiles that share some similarities to dragon tales.

    • @duckduck4599
      @duckduck4599 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Well yeah but it's not a dragon then is it lol that's like me saying I saw a loch ness monster then it ended up being a whale. "Dragons" are just misidentified living animals, perhaps a prehistoric megalania. Except from that it's Chinese whispers that got out of hand.

    • @zapdite9410
      @zapdite9410 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Danisha Rf because evolutionarily wings come from legs, meaning a dragon would have had to evolve from a six legged animal. Which don't exist. So unless a dragon was a giant bug, no dragons

  • @Aethuviel
    @Aethuviel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    2:50 Dragons started looking like dinosaurs only in the last half century, when dinosaurs became more popular. We MADE them look that way. Medieval dragons looked like mixes between mammals (often with ears) and snakes (often with snake-like bodies and tongues). And they were virtually never larger than a horse. Making them as big or bigger than the largest dinosaurs, is again, an invention of modern fantasy.
    3:17 Top5s still hasn't learned. PTEROSAURS WERE NOT DINOSAURS. THEY WERE PTEROSAURS. There are winged dinosaurs, and they are called *birds*.
    3:58 They're all mythological reptiles, something we take into a huge umbrella term called "dragon". That greek creature is a giant snake, and look literally nothing like the Welsh four-legged, two-winged dragon.
    6:40 Dracorex was proven to be a baby Pachycephalosaurus, you know, the one with the huge helmet. As they grew up, the knobs became smaller and the skull bone thicker. Stygimoloch is the subadult stage, Dracorex is the juvenile.
    I love Top5s but it's always extremely frustrating and poorly written when it comes to animals.

    • @zionthedragon8866
      @zionthedragon8866 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Finally, someone who gets it!! Also, at 3:58, originally DRAGON wasn't the umbrella term for dragons, as it was draco, but since the spread of ideas, modern liberal times like these, and uncreativeness and carelessness of others, dragons became a umbrella term for any reptile, sadly. Wish it wasn't true. Also, dragon was old French name, which comes from the brittonic mythos of the six limbed serpent lizard with six limbs, but the name it's self is derived from Greek drakon. But people like to use the fact it's mythical to justify calling anything a dragon. Such are millienial times.

    I mean given how broad the term ‘dragon’ can be, since it doesn’t have a single solid definition... Pterosaurs are basically dragons.

    • @tkmccoywv
      @tkmccoywv 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Pterosaurs most closely resemble wyverns - a dragon-like creature with two legs and wings. I can see how people finding the fossils of pterosaurs would interpret them as dragons, even putting extra legs on them as few complete skeletons are found. Hell, early scientists actually broke the bones of T-Rex because they felt he should stand more upright. Adding or subtracting things to suit one's prejudices or desires is a long standing habit among humans.

    • @SarcasticDragonGaming
      @SarcasticDragonGaming 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Teresa McCoy yeah well survival instincts are a bitch and don’t go away with a mere 10,000 years. Regardless as I said there’s no scientific definition for either, therefore Pterosaurs are probably close enough to be called them. On a non-scientific level of course.

    Unfortunately, the western interpretation of a dragon is impossible. There's no precedent for a six-limbed vertebrate in the evolutionary timeline, or in anything extant that we've seen. There would have to be a completely different evolutionary lineage for six-limbed vertebrates, which just never happened.
    However, the possibility of a wyvern or an eastern dragon still exists, as there are animals that exist or existed that bear striking similarity. Recently, a dinosaur was discovered in China that remarkably resembled a tiny wyvern, with forelimbs that had developed into bat wing-like appendages. This dinosaur, yi qi, used these primitive wings to glide, but a reptile possessing similar attributes, while also being larger and capable of powered flight, is not out of the question. and for eastern dragons, there exist snakes that possess the ability to flatten their bodies and fly on wind currents. As there are lizards that have evolved to resemble snakes, it's not impossible for a large, four-limbed serpentine creature to possess the same ability.
    For both, there are plenty of theoretical ways that both flight and fire-breathing could exist. I'll go with my personal one. Their bones could be hollow, like a bird's, and the air pockets inside could be filled with hydrogen. This would simultaneously cut down their weight and add buoyancy. Large bladders, likewise filled with hydrogen, would further add buoyancy and would act as the fuel for their breath. Bacterial flora in its gut would provide the gas during digestion. The act of igniting the gas varies. It could be as complex as a platinum-hydrogen-oxygen reaction, or as simple as a spark pouch in its jaw. Forcing the gas out fast enough would prevent burning the mouth, membranes over the nostrils and eyes prevent damage there, and a crocodile-like palate would act as a valve to seal the gas flow. Of course, this would mean the dragon would lose the ability to fly the more it breathed fire, and would need to digest before flying or breathing again.
    I heard an interesting theory for the bones, as well. It states the high abundance of hydrogen in its system would make its blood naturally corrosive. Basically a form of hydrochloric acid. This could mean that if the dragon died and homeostasis failed, its bones would rapidly degenerate and dissolve in its own blood, leaving no evidence that it existed. This would also support legends where dragon blood is "hot" to the touch and hurts people who touch it, like the legend of Fafnir.
    Is any of this true? I don't know. And I have no way of proving any of it. But it's better to consider the ways something might be true before dismissing it as a falsehood. That's how science works.

    So when a dragon dies do they self cremate as the flame generating chemicals mix when the internal storage of these two volatile chemicals degrades and then poof no proof of a dragon just ash...

    I think it's a bit more likely they are misinterpreting venom if you look at many venom types from around the world when a victim is bitten straight away it is excruciating pain with many victims claiming it burns it burns so why would our ancestors not think fire

    Some historians say that dinosaurs lived all up to 1700's and then were finally slayed by humans. And that's the reason why the word dinosaur didn't appear until then. And also the reason why there's a lot of paintings showing battles between men and dragons.
    Great video by the way, love your channel! :)

    All of these mythical creatures, I believe did or still do exist, but since humanity has done terribly things to our planet and to the living creatures on it, I would bet that these creatures could live in fear of us humans. Has anyone ever thought of that? That dragons could have dwindling numbers every year do to us? Because we hunted them down? pollution? or possibly our technology could be or has killed them? And that they could have existed, and there underneath our feet, their very bones underneath buildings, houses, or even the ocean? Possibilities are endless!

    There is this SUPER interesting doc on dragons, and it goes through a lot of the same stuff, about how they could exsist, what their evolution would be like from the time of the dinosaurs up until medival eruope.

    Actually not all European Dragons look like that. In England, you have the "Worm" a Serpentine Dragon similar to the Chinese Dragon. There's even a creepy legend about it which inspired the Bram Stoker story "Lair of the White Worm" which I recommend reading.
