Locality Review: JP Nagar, Bengaluru

Jayaprakash Narayan Nagar or JP Nagar is one of the oldest and well-planned localities in Bengaluru. JP Nagar comes right after Jayanagar while listing out the best localities in the southern part of the city. The locality is home to many sandalwood actors, political leaders, and veteran cricketers.
JP Nagar, part of south Bengaluru, is located between Bannerghatta Road and Kanakapura Road. It’s spread across 2,500 acres and is divided into 9 phases. Prominent areas around JP Nagar include Jayanagar, Banashankari, and BTM Layout. JP Nagar has good, wide roads, well-planned phases dotted with huge trees, parks, many lakes and BWSSB water supply. Good connectivity to employment hubs led to the development of this premium residential locality into the cosmopolitan hub it is today.
Electronic City and Whitefield, the major IT hubs of Bengaluru, are around 17 and 22 km away, respectively. Bannerghatta Main Road, which houses many employment hubs like the Divyashree Techpark, IBC Knowledge Park, Kalyani Magnum and Jigani Industrial area, is 8 to 12 km away. Many companies such as VMware Software India Pvt Ltd and Genpact are also present in the locality.
Oxford, Sherwood, Jain (Deemed-to-be-University), Narayana e-techno, and IIM-B are some of the premium educational institutions. Hospitals like Fortis, Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Trinity and Manipal Hospitals are located within 5 km. JP Nagar has many eateries in its neighbourhood that match the taste of all its residents. Central, Royal Meenakshi Mall, and Gopalan Innovation malls are some of the shopping and entertainment destinations within a 3-6 km radius. Ranga Shankara and Mini Forest are some recreational destinations for your weekends. You can also take a walk at many lakes that are a part of this beautiful neighbourhood. Sarakki, Puttenahalli, Jaraganahalli, Avalahalli, and Krishna Nagar lakes are a few to be named.
Outer Ring Road, Kanakapura Road and Bannerghatta Road offer excellent connectivity to JP Nagar. Anjanapura Main Road, Gottigere Main Road and Devarachikkanahalli Main Road are other stretches connecting the locality to various other parts of the city. BMTC runs a good fleet of buses here. Finding cabs and autos is never a hassle either. Majestic, the nodal point of bus and train connectivity, is around 11 km away, and JP Nagar has a metro station of its own on the Green Line. The Kempegowda International Airport is situated at a distance of about 44 km.
JP Nagar is a combination of both- a well-established layout and many upcoming areas. While the northern part of the locality consisting of areas like JP Nagar 1st Phase, 5th phase, 7th phase, Sarakki and Ragi Gudda are well-established, some of the residential areas in the southern part like Avalahalli and Jambusavari Dinne. The area is a mix of the local population, migrated professionals working in nearby employment hubs and the neo rich who prefer to settle in south Bengaluru.
While JP Nagar is a well-planned neighbourhood, an increasing number of social and retail infrastructure does lead to traffic congestion in many pockets, mainly the Sarakki Junction. Bad roads in a few sections of the area is also a concern for motorists. Over commercialization in the locality has led to protests by residents in the past. The residential community in JP Nagar is very active.
Puttenahalli Lake in the locality is the first lake in Bengaluru that got a go-ahead to be managed by the local residents’ community. In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to say JP Nagar has one of the highest numbers of well-maintained lakes in the city.
To wrap it up, JP Nagar’s strategic location between two prime roads of the south- i.e., the Bannerghatta Road and the Kanakapura Road, good connectivity to major IT hubs like Electronic City and Bannerghatta Road and a well-established social and retail infrastructure are some of the reasons for its development over the years.
