** The Story
The player once again takes the role of the Doomguy, who, after being stranded on Phobos and subsequently fighting his way out of Deimos and Hell itself, returns home to Earth - only to find that it too has fallen victim to the hellish invasion.
With all the major cities in the world in ruins, the remaining leaders plan to use spacecraft to transport the survivors of Earth's population. However, the starport is the only way for the ships to depart and the demons have protected it with a force field. All of humanity's remaining soldiers make a desperate assault on the starport, but eventually they are decimated and only the player remains. He continues on doggedly and selflessly, despite knowing that he will be left behind in order to save the rest of his race.
Once the Marine accomplishes this, he is free to live out the rest of his time alone on Earth while humanity hopefully continues on elsewhere. But along the way, he begins to learn how he might finally thwart the invasion once and for all...

** Notes
The ZDoom game engine is slightly different from the vanilla Doom II engine, but the result is reasonably faithful to the original game.
As a general note, Doom 2 feels harder than Doom. The last few levels had to be carefully planned, as it is very easy to get overwhelmed or taken off guard. In general, you need to be more cautious to deal with the monsters that were added in Doom 2 (Chaingunners, Arachnotrons, Pain Elementals, Revenants, and my personal nemesis, the Arch-vile).
Secret level MAP31 (at 01:37:15) is a tribute to id's previous game, Wolfenstein. Super secret level MAP32 (at 01:43:47) also contains four hanging Commander Keen characters in reference to another previous game from id Software.
Note that in level 3 and 5, I use a glitch to reach secret sectors. By running diagonally you jump further than when running straight.
** Completion
At 01:34:46, in level 15 (Industrial Zone), I left some enemies near the end of the level because it would have taken additional time to get the blue key, go back to the exit and kill everyone, then go back to the secret exit.
Apart from this exception, 100% kills achieved in all levels.
At 01:36:00, in level 15 (Industrial Zone), there's a secret sector that can't be triggered because it's too small and the player can't actually walk on it.
At 03:19:00, in level 27 (Monster Condo), a teleporter pad is marked as secret, but it cannot be triggered because the player gets teleported before stepping on it.
Apart from these exceptions, 100% secrets achieved in all levels. -

@Bengaltiger1 You gotta use the Invisibility, get closer to the Cyberdemon and constantly fire your BFG/plasma gun towards him, make sure you’re in front of a wall!
Invisible is useful when you play only with the keyboard.

@@Harry_Eyeball back then i couldn't understand single English word in doom. me and my younger brother we played doom, doom2 probably 1000 times again and again start to finish. one by one we discovered the secrets. western culture was kind of illegal in my country back then. after revolution we exposed to video game world little by little. first on chinese knock off Nintendo counsel we got mario, zelda, city tank. then sega mortal combat, sonic. then pc doom, doom2, duke nukem, half life, half life2 oh man half life2!!! my mind still exploding these days because of HALF LIFE2!!!! I'll never forget the feeling after i finished half life2. i think half life2 is my #1 favorite video game of all time.

I remember playing this when i was 10 years old at my friends house and I wanted this game more than anything in the world. 26 years later and I'm just finishing up the Doom Eternal campaign. I've come full circle.

Doom 2 was the first non pussy video game that I played way back in 1995. I was 7 years old. Prior to this my video game experience had consisted of sonic and Mario lol. I was absolutely horrified and instantly addicted.
The sheer abject horrors depicted in this game make me question humanity's need to exist to this day.

Doom was amazing in the DOS days but Unreal Tournament is the best FPS no question.
What u do is u beat doom 1 or atleast get to near the end of inferno to get yourself ready for doom 2 because it’s more challenging.

I played this game in 1996, right after Spear and Wolfenstein. These wer top notch games at that time on my brand new 486 DX4 100Mhz PC that dad just bought spending a little fortune. I was studying engineering. No internet yet so we havd to copy them on floppies or CDs. I was 26 now I'm fucking 45. I even cried seeing this, dam
fastcougar3200 Snag a copy of it online some place and install GZDoom (source port) and try it out with Brutal Doom. It's so good I still play it off and on, lots of fun :D
And I kind of feel the same way, was only 8 or 9 at the time, but me and my dad played the hell out of Resident Evil, the new REmastered edition is pretty damn good, made me relive parts of that again. So good.
If you have a play station three, I believe you can get the trilogy for a couple of dollars.

Killing each other :D That's what I love about Doom. The monsters actually attack each other. That is so unique in the whole series.

+c00lg33k I remember that the first time I played Doom was the SNES version; when I played this in PC it was a TOTALLY unique experience. And the monsters attacking each other was the most impressive of all (And the level design too)

yeah, now the only thing we have is fucking cyberbug 2077 and shitty cod games.
To this day I still sometimes dream about being inside Doom. The sounds, music and the monsters (as well as scenery). I was horrified. The modern versions just won't have the same effect.

I honestly can't get that same crunchy, satisfying feeling from Doom (2016). Something about 90s shooters is just... satisfying. No wonder they're making so many modern games in that exact style and aesthetic.

I remember flunking university back in the old days because of this game.
Dunno why and dunno how thats even possible....but theres literally not even one single fps game that has anywhere close to the awesome death screams, howls, grunts, hisses and sounds like the original Doom games. When those monsters saw you, and attacked you....and died.....best sound over in an fps.

this game is legendary and ahead of its time awesome funny sound affects when you shot somebody and great layout through all the levels. I think still one of the best first person shooters ever made.

I haven't played Doom 2 since I had a 486-66Mhz, yet memory remains. It's strange how the brain can remember some events like the opening scene of a level as something it has seen before, even though it's been 3 decades. It brings up the thought, "Oh, yeah. I remember this one. Try to get the blue orb this time, OK?"

so I played this game when I was 5 at my grandparents home with my 2 yo cousain where my older cousain had installed it and just randomly thought of it. its crazy how much I was scared of it then and how I can only laugh about the graphics and simplicity seeing this now. a great milestone for fps evolution

Its funny how the shot gun sound in this gane is vetter then modern fps shotguns... I am sorely disapointed in how alot of games have such shitty shotgun sounds
