Martin’s reasons to want his boyfriend to kill ‘people’:

he is a petty king and we love him for it

Well like Elias deserves it many multiple hundreds times more tbh.
In this episode Martin learns he can’t use his all powerful boyfriend like a loaded gun even against those who deserve it
Fairchild is one of the exceptions because if he wasn’t the fanbase would be so upset they would never hope to hear him again
I love how Simon was totally panicked about the possibility of dying but completely kept his composure. He was just like "Oh wait you can kill me? Well... I'm out." *ascends*
Honestly, the idea of Simon just flinging around in the skies like a video game character with ragdoll physics is canon to me now.
Simon: "I'ma go now byeeeeee" Ragdolls into the sky like a Gmod character getting one of their fingers attached to the skybox

Martin's just trying to do the right thing in a world where the right thing doesnt exist anymore. Sure murder is bad but is it so bad when your killing someone who has inflicted pain on hundreds or thousands of others? Simon, Helen, Jude, Elias, and all the other avatars get to have swell time while everyone suffers under their hands? I can't blame Martin for trying to bring some good but im glad by the end of this episode he realized that it might be doing Jon some bad...oh okay i see what everyone means by this last season being about capitalism now🤔
The way Martin says 'Jesus' when Fairchild hits the ground is my favorite part

jon keeps on casually pulling out god defying feats casually and no one notices it
-he managed to escape the buried, a place that's very existence revolved around the concept of being trapped
-he managed to go into the lonely, and pulled out an avatar of his lonely depression
-during the unknowing where everything was basically chaos and you can't understand jack $hit, he managed to bring someone to their senses and cut through the BS
-he looked on the dark star, a powerful artifact of the darkness that radiated dark, and would kill anyone who looked at it.
-a guy who has spent multiple lifetimes worshipping the literal embodiment of nihilism said that he's the closest person in the universe to being considered important

Yeah, Simon's still my favorite of the non-main cast Avatars. He's just so chill. An asshole, yes, but still.
I love how this entire domain is just the plot of Ex Altiora

Despite being an evil sky demon, every time Simon shows up, i can't help but imagine him going "its just a prank bro" and then breaking into a giggle fit. He's a massive troll, just his fun involves lifelong trauma and possibly death.
Not enough people talk about the sound design of the stomps, beautifully done in my opinion.

My theory about John only killing avatars who marked him is still standing!
Well there are the case of Oliver and Helen but I don't know if it count. It was Michael that marked John, not Helen, and I don't know if Oliver marked John or if it is "being clinically dead for 6 months" that did the job.
Jon described Oliver as helping him, which suggests that in his mind it was the "coma" that did the marking.

I think Simon might be my favourite avatar. Well, one of the favourites anyways. Why do I like these eldritch monsters so much? He is such a fun little grandpa, he is living his best life. You go, you funky little old man!
Side note: Jon is such a celebrity in the apocalypse, it's great! And is it just me, or did his "What an *excellent* question" sound very much like Elias? I noticed it several times already, he sounds more and more like our boy Jonah and I find it very interesting. Am I imagining things? Also, the end... Jon, you didn't sound so sure and convincing about wanting to kill Elias... Again, interesting.

I can't say i'd agree to that. Jon is described by Martin in earlier seasons as not having a sense of humor and then someone (can't recall who) was like "No he does, you've just never seen it" and this season is very much Jon showing he has humor (And Martin kind of missing it? Like the knock knock - trailer part)
Possibly a class accent/mannerism he shares with similar ancients. Simon was actually Italian but he adopted the culture he moved into. Possibly as camouflage. He was supposedly a con artist.

the fact that even in the hopeless situation jon and martin are, they still try to communicate and adjust to each other is everything. also, simon living his best life even in apocalypse is inspiring. simon and oliver are unbothered kings. and helen is here for the drama
It’s so interesting how avatars can seem so scary, especially when there just mysterious forces in statements, but then when you actually get to know them personally they’re fun and weird and likable

I take it as him sort of snapping after everything. I imagine the emotional blankness of serving and then being trapped in the Lonely, only to try to rebuild himself at the safehouse but being interrupted by the end of the world. He's trying to leverage the only power he thinks he has, Jon's abilities, because he prefers working indirectly. But his anger and fear is bleeding through that, so he's trying to manipulate Jon into doing what Martin cannot.
both simon and helen are horrible people but i just cant help but love them simon is just this goofy old man having fun and helens just chilling watching every thing happen

It's occurred to me that Jon is starting to sound like Elias a bit more!! This is my 4th go round listening and I just realized that.
the vast is such a weirdly beautiful fear. personally, i don't even know what's there to be afraid of (besides getting stomped of course) and there's so much to admire! infinite sights you cannot begin to comprehend? vast horizons, huge structures, unending falls without the fear of hitting the ground? sign me the fuck up for that sweet, sweet rush of adrenaline. take me, Fairchild. throw me off of a cliff.
Finally they talk about 1) the slapping and 2) how killing others is not the best way to hold onto your humanity.

The 'huge unfathomable creature' aspect of the vast and the 'infinite void' aspect seem very different despite being part of the same fear. The first is a more active threat, it could crush you without even meaning to. The second is more passive, it's the huge lack of anything that's so scary. The fear comes from different things, is it even fair to call them both 'the vast'? Maybe they were close to splitting like the end and the extinction.
I mean, they both stem from the fear of something inconceivably huge. Of something that might make one's life feel utterly insignificant against the true scale of the universe. The two fears may branch off from there, but they share the same root.
One is the fear of a more active threat. A being or force so large, you could never truly understand the scope of it. It poses a threat by it's shear unfathomable bulk. It doesn't care about you. It doesn't even know you exist. But it will kill you nonetheless if you are unlucky to just be in it's path. You are but a speck of dust that it's simply sweeping aside. It goes beyond the fear of violence, pain, or death. It's more about realizing just how little your death will matter in the grand scheme of things.
The infinite void is also based in a fear of insignificance. Of distances too incredibly vast to even conceive of. Of knowing there are individual stars out there so massive that they make our entire solar system look like a pin prick in comparison. It's of realizing just how small we all are, and how we will never truly understand the universe in which we live in. We will only get bits and pieces, and those fragments can feel momentous as they are discovered, but they are so incredibly minuscule that they might as well be meaningless compared to the sheer infinity that is our reality.
Both stem from cosmic horror. Of feeling so incredibly small that you might as well fade away into the either for all the impact you might have. I feel like that's the true power of the Vast. Beyond simple heights or depths, it's about making you feel microscopic.
The Vast is my favorite fear, honestly, and I think about it a LOT. lol 😅
The Void and The Colossus. They’d be an interesting split
and then there's the additional fear of losing yourself *inside* the colossus, your identity and all of your personal achievements reduced to nothing but making up a fraction of a greater whole... the vast is so cool
I mean it is the plot of 'ex altiora' THE vast leitner, and thalassaphobia binds big monsters and vast voids pretty tightly
I feel like this statement is really honing in on the way that the buried and the vast are two sides of the same mobius strip. The fear of being crushed requires the fear of something big enough to crush you.

OMG I totally came up with a similar giant monster concept a while ago before I even listened to this episode. For this being about The Vast it's such a small world.

For some reason this episode reminds me of the movie _Melancholia._ Maureen reminds me a lot of Claire. Especially the part where she puts her family in the car in a frantic (futile) escape attempt, then panics and tries to carry her child when the car dies. Claire in _Melancholia_ does something similar… I think that’s why it’s one of my favorite episodes so far.
John seems to be only killing everyone who marked him (except Oliver but Oliver didn’t really mark him, death in general did)

You know, something about Simon's voice was vaguely familiar to me, but I couldn't quite place it until. 'Herald of the Ceaseless Watcher.' Then it clicked Dorian Pavus! From Dragon Age Inquisition! He sounds like Dorian!
It is a classic accent of a certain type. Simon's not British but he tried to blend in with a specific crowd when he was a con artist.
Ech.... Every time Helen appears I can't help but be disappointed. I kiss Michael and his unnerving voice so much.
