At first I was confused as to why it was so big. Then I assumed that it was just a 19th century thing. But actually as i thought back it’s because she loves science and I guess that on a large scale you need more robust equipment.
I thought that she had the thermometer to try to find nice weather for Ann since Scotland was too cold and it was symbolic of Anne still thinking of and being in love with Ann dispite speading time away from her. (Even the little things in this show are awesome and fabulous!)
I really thought it was some kind of instrument at first. I laughed so hard during the carriage scene with Mary 'cos I thought she's gonna play it while they were arguing HAHAHAHAHA lmao!
I thought it was weird that she recorded even the temperature on her diaries… like how? Then this scene. Perfection. Btw, the time she wakes up and falls asleep is also there, that’s why she keeps looking at her watch.
I loved this scene. Although I'm a straight woman, I see a lot of myself in Anne Lister. Lol The only thing that stuck out like a sore thumb, was when Marriane said "when we fight"! That is an American expression for an argument! There is no way that any British person would have said that! Even now a days! It's the equivalent of Clint Eastwood in one of his spaghetti westerns saying "Tally-Ho"! 🤣 I was completely baffled by this, but today I found out that this was made in a collaboration of the BBC and HBO! That would explain it!

So Anne felt like she had to find someone who, despite not being the love of her life, would be much more psychologicaly dependent on her than Mariane and wouldn't leave her for marrying some guy. And I'm very glad that the series doesn't shy away from that.
