2022 Mazda CX-5 review: Has the revamped SUV range changed enough to stay relevant?

  • Far from being an all-new model as the brand's marketing team might have you believe, this latest facelift to the ageing Mazda CX-5 has seen a number of range adjustments to help it stand out a bit more in a world of newer SUV rivals.
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 has its work cut out for it. The revamped Toyota RAV4 has just launched, there's newer rivals in the form of the Mitsubishi Outlander, Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson, and there's a new Nissan X-Trail just around the corner.
So, Mazda Australia has tried to eek just a bit more life out of the old CX-5, which has been on the scene since early 2017 in Australia, but five years is quite literally a lifetime in this part of the market.
Has the little nip and tuck to keep the CX-5 fresh kept it relevant in what is Australia's biggest new-car segment? Andrew Chesterton will guide you through the situation in this detailed video review.

does anyone know if the touring active turbo-diesel is a good choice for 2x1 hour trips / day at 60 km/h? or at any speed above? also is there a much bigger risk with service costs after the 5 year capped for a diesel vs a petrol?

Great review I’m currently looking at getting the Diesel CX5 Akera or the Diesel CX8 Touring SP AWD a couple of things that I’m uncertain about on the CX8 are the Maztex Grand Lux suede seats being too delicate in general use and other things on this model like no DRL’s and the old 8” infotainment screen which are only available on the GT versions.
The 2.5 Turbo sounds like Mazda’s version of the no longer available XT Forester and is a good move for Mazda on the CX5 .
However I would have liked an opinion on the Diesel motor as well as this engine is available on the Akera and of course standard on the CX8 AWD. Decisions Decisions!

I own a 2020 diesel Akera and I would pick the diesel every time. In 90% of situations it’s just as fast as the turbo petrol (450Nm for the diesel) but it’s far more economical. Even driving it like a race car it’ll do under 6.8L/100km. The turbo petrol is a chore to get under 11L/100km.
Go the diesel and don’t look back! It’s an awesome engine - pulls like a train, uses little fuel, sounds kinda cool (and very not diesely)

@@alexaescht good to hear about the diesel. I’ve put a refundable deposit on one, I do heaps of km and my i30N isn’t too practical 🤣 I was hesitant because of the old Diesel engine issues and many have said they’d never buy a Mazda diesel. I drone the new tucson elite N Line and wasn’t a fan at all, so noisy and unrefined, cheap feeling and not very ergonomic interior and just overall underwhelming. I was expecting to love it as well. Our family car is a NA petrol 2.5 CX8 which I love, slightly under powered for fast over taking but if your not in a hurry it’s an amazing car. Thanks for the input in the diesel.

I have a 2016 Mazda CX5 and it's be a great car. I just have just ordered a 2022 Mazda CX 5 Akera (Signature in US) in Soul Red Crystal.
There are 2 things that have annoyed me about Mazda in Oz.
    1. Why do Mazda delete the controls for regulating the centre air vents ( the rest of the world gets them). Look at the US TH-cam videos.
    2. Why don't Mazda have DRL on all the cars and not just the upper models?
I have contacted Mazda in Oz, with no reply.

Mushy Suspension!? In Sep.22 I test drove the GT SP and appreciated the stiffer suspension all the reviews talk about. Coming from a Subaru it was a big deciding factor for me. Just picked up my 2022 Akera (built Oct.22) and have put 600km touring on it in 2 days. Have they changed the suspension or is the Akera tuned differently to the GT...for 75 year-olds (no ageism intended)? Yes it soaks up bumps but it wallows and dives through bends....not Zoom Zoom at all.
Going in for the 1k service next week. Is there anything they can do to stiffen it up (please, please, please)?

The Turbo is the only option to consider. The 6 speed transmission although a great unit is lagging when compared to the competition and limits fuel economy.

    • @SokemRokemRobot
      @SokemRokemRobot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The Mazda 6 speed automatic isn't broke, so no need to fix it. It's a solid transmission. When I'm on the highway with my CX-5 Turbo cruising at 70 mph, it's running at 2,000 RPMs.

I must drive on a long roads to a winery considering I live in the country and our cx5 spends most of its time on bad back county roads. And that's why a 16/17 Inch wheel is better than a 18 plus wheel with a low profile tire. If you own a CX5 with a 18 inch wheel then you don't live in the country and enjoy the worst ride.

CX-60 is positioned above the CX-5 and, at least for now, only comes as PHEV (yuck! Miss me with that crap! If I want something to plug into a socked I'll buy a vacuum).
I'm hoping they'll bring a successor for the CX-5, although, at how things stand right now - Mazda has jumped on the EV bandwagon and will go the same route as all other manufacturers.

I drove both the 2022 Kia Sportage GT Line 2.0L diesel, and the 2022 Mazda Akera 2.5L turbo. Bought the Mazda. Looks better (IMO), drives better, and doesn't go overboard with design or features. Kia just tries to do too much, especially with the external styling, which may be to some people's liking, but the elegant simplicity of the Mazda both inside and out sets it apart, IMO. And the internal trim is gorgeous. Definitely the most luxurious in the mid size SUV family segment.

Please start reviewing base models, most of the ppl would lease or finance base models not premiums. Terrible vehicle, 2,5 makes a lot of noise, road noise, terrible MPG, 6 speed auto trans. small front seats, small driver space (reduce space between your food and gas pedal with brick pedal-this is serious safety issue) , front arm rest way behind incl. cup holders, ac controls are way down and unsafe to control the ac when you driving, side mirrors vibrate with 70 mph, if you have premium pack there is TWO fuel indicators next to each other lol, heated steering is only 1/4 of it, line keep assist doesn't work 90% of the time in the Citi or suburbans driving, terible on long drive, there is good things: great automated head lights (if equipped) automated wipers, heads up display (if I equipped) blin spot monitoring, ventilated front seats (if equipped) I wouldn't recommend this vehicle, for that money there is another better options on the market.
