    Its weird how women have been perfectly able to see male characters as role models for decades, but men aren't able to see female characters as role models for the last few years. There are so many female characters boys and men can use as role models, and until recently they were able to. For example: Sarah Connor, Ellen Ripley, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ahsoka Tano, Xena, The Bride/Beatrix Kiddo, Dana Scully, Princess Leia, Hermione Granger, Wonder Woman, and Katniss Everdeen to name a few.

    • @Chaddlee
      @Chaddlee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is a theory that overt wokeness has over taken movie/tv producers, so the changing of male characters to female ones is a lot less about female empowerment and more about removing strong male characters. Not sure I believe in conspiracy theory's, but I will say the new Ghostbusters with an all female cast was shockingly bad.

    • @Trikeboy2
      @Trikeboy2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@Chaddlee That theory is of course pure bullshit. I wouldn't even call it female empowerment, more simply, more roles for women. People say Rey replaced Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, but Luke wasn't the main character in the prequels was he? He is the main character of the original trilogy, but Anakin is the main character of the prequel trilogy, and Rey is the main character of the sequel trilogy. The Doctor can regenerate into anything, even non human forms, so why not a female body? If Steve Rogers can lift Mjolnir, so can a worthy woman.
      As for Ghostbusters, it was a bad script, it had nothing to do with the 4 ladies, I actually liked Kate McKinnon in the movie. There wasn't much female empowerment in that movie either, since anyone not part of the main 4 characters, including women, were behaving like idiots.

    There is a legitimate point with regards to Dr Who as a role model, as it was weirdly unique as a male protagonist who finds a non-violent solution to issues. This is especially relevant with the criticisms of "toxic masculinity". Of course, Nick Fletcher missed that subtlety completely with his pseudo anti-woke nonsense.

    • @SamLanena
      @SamLanena 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'll try to make a long story short. I spent a big chunk of my childhood in hospital, and Dr Who ( Pertwee was my first, but Baker was the first I saw from regeneration to regeneration ) became a magical escape for a sick little boy. I was gutted in 89 when the show was cancelled, and absolutely giddy when I heard Eccleston was bringing it back in 05, although I'd argue Tennant became the second best doctor after Baker.. I digress. Anyway, I watched Smith and felt bad for him, given the quality of garbage that Moffatt gave him, and finally gave up after Capaldi's first season. The show is dead to me now, and I don't think even Russell Davies can revive it - but the doctor will be a woman forever more, because no-one is going to flush their career by suggesting that a woman wasn't good enough. I read quite a bit of hate about Whittaker's run, but never watched any of it, because the show had lost me years before. Sorry, I did say I'd TRY to make it short..

      Except young women had been looking up to the male Doctor for decades as a role model, and no doubt young boys are fully capable of looking up to the 13th Doctor in the same way. If changing the gender of the Doctor removes the only prominant example of a nonviolent or nontoxic masculine protagonist from our screens, that's a pretty damning indictment of how much work needs to be done in improving the writing of virtually all other male role models in fiction elsewhere.

      @@sambkingmusic Doctor Who is the worst case to argue this issue. The Doctor is an alien regenerating being who somehow always ends up as a white british bloke, never made much sense to begin with (as much as I have enjoyed the show). With a female James Bond it's not that I don't think you couldn't have a female James Bond, it's more a question of originality. If feminists wish to create female role models, I'm absolutely fine with it. I just hate the constant regurgitation of movie franchises that have been done, done again and done to death. Why not come up with an original story, with an original female hero, instead of taking a well-defined character and reappropriating them for your own agenda? That just feels lazy and uninspired (and yes that goes for any new instalment of these endless repetitious plots involving cringeworthy innuendo and badly scripted villains, whether it's a male or female anachronism playing the lead).
      I'm a bisexual male who loves 80s trashy horror flicks. I recently read they're turning Child's Play into a netflix show, in which Chucky's owner will be a boy who is being bullied for being gay, and Chucky's going to help him respect himself more, and beat the bullies. First of all: The original Chucky is an evil serial killer trapped in a doll's body because of a voodoo charm gone wrong. What he wants to do is take over a human body by killing it, and become a real human being again. He's not Santa Clause, folks. Next up, a remake of Silence of the Lambs in which Hannibal the Cannibal teaches an obese child about healthy cooking, and Freddie Krueger teaching a depressed child to dare to dream. Secondly: Why? Other than wanting to make millions of dollars without the need to be creative, what is the point of any of these endlessly worsening copies of a once brilliant movie? Why do we keep putting up with this unoriginal unimaginitive crap?
      You want a movie with a classic character and a strong female lead? Make this then: In a land of endless opportunity, one woman has the guts to fight the british empire and claim freedom. Uma Thurman is... George Washington. I'd pay to go and see that.

      @@wuckf1t you do realise that these characters were created to cater to a small crowd, to virtue signal or to diminish the original male characters. Captain Carter was portrayed as a better Captain America in What If and managed to save Bucky when Steve couldn't, Iron Heart is a blander version of Iron Man who made her Iron suit better because why not, they made Robin gay (I know they said bisexual but let's not pretend we don't know why), John Kent is gay too, and the Doctor was not just made a female, but the past incarnations were now replaced with females, people of colour or both for no reason, even though they didn't need to because women and people of colour already loved the show, and did not need to be pandered to. They didn't make female characters or race swapped characters to appeal to a new audience, they did this to virtue signal and pander to an audience who are unlikely to watch their crap anyway.

      @@savestate6360 you say that like all 6 robins, all 7 green lanterns, miles morales, aren’t great characters on their own. They made Lucius fox son Batman, and that’s an interesting character despite a different complexion or whatever. Same with the last couple green lanterns, one a black police officer and one a Latina woman, but they’re still both different characters. Even John Stewart was in interesting character to put against hal and guy/ other green lanterns etc. And miles morales in the main protagonist in the best Spider-Man film, so obviously variations work. We wouldn’t have the multiverse if the public didn’t want different versions of characters. How else do you expect comic books and media as a whole to stay fresh without change? There’s a reason Craig bond was so well received, because it was different. That character was supposed to reflect the negatives of toxic masculinity and shallow national insecurity like the original novels. Having that new 007 in no time to die, again, was there to make james question himself, to sow seeds of doubt, those insecurities already shown in quantum and skyfall. I’ve only picked a handful of examples, you still think characters are shallow because they change genders or race?🤨 sure mate.

      @savestate6360 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wuckf1t yes, because you should make original characters instead of taking others then race/gender swap them to make an unoriginal character. You talk about the comics, however you haven't talked about the failing numbers. Earlier this year, we had noticed that YA novels and manga had been added to the list of comic sales to make it look like the comic book industry is soaring, but DC and Marvel have been struggling for years, only managing to make over 100,000 in sales, while Demon Slayer is dominating. Miles Morales is good in the movie... but people don't like his books, his main criticism is that "he's a tokenised Spiderman" (FYI, this criticism was said by a black man), as well being uninteresting and unoriginal. You also just stated about the race and gender about these heroes and not their personality, but hey, you actually are starting to think like an employee at DC and Marvel.

There’s so much personality to that character if you just look to the film and game he’s in. These are original intricate characters, just taking the same job. But in reality, both of those characters have very different character arcs, different personalities, and different drives and motivations.
      But crucially, Luke wasn't replaced by a woman. The character of Luke appears in some capacity in all three of the sequel films, and has his own seperate and independent character arc that develops his character further from the Return of the Jedi. That's not a replacement. It's not a recasting. It's a shift of focus, which is not the same thing.
