    This video is the exact opposite of "hey guys, "! It hit me with such immediacy that I felt a little anxious, as if I'm not paying enough attention. And that's a good thing!

    A lot of TH-cam videos fail to satisfy "I cut the side off, hot-glued a Arduino into! Like, subscribe, and donate to my patron guyzzz". It is incredibly refreshing to see content like this. I love it when people reverse engineer the existing hardware. You are legit one of my heroes. Excellent work! I feel like I have wind in my sails.

    Wow, I'm glad youtube recommended this to me. At first I was like "yeah, ok, 4 buttons, why are you recommending this to me youtube" but after watching, and checking out some of the other videos, code, microcontrollers, machining, reverse engineering, disassembly, FPGA design?? - wow, finally a channel that goes into the details of the fun stuff, not just watered down for mass consumption. Why didn't I know about this sooner? SUBSCRIBED!!!

      Depends i guess. The short circuit buttons will overwrite the lowpass buttons. You could maybe dissern both lowpass buttons getting pressed from an individual button press but in the end it does not matter too much in this application

    I just want to say how humbled I am by your knowledge and skill. There is so much expertise being shown in so many disciplines of this 'little' project that, even though I have had the word 'engineer' in my job title for more than 20 years... it feels kind of like an example of verbal irony at this point. I look forward to your content going forward. If any of it is simple enough for me to grok, you might teach this old dog some new tricks.

    I’ve loved watching this process, the end result looks beautiful, thanks for documenting! Fascinated at how you re-wrote the firmware for the ST chip, really impressive, out of curiosity if the IC wasn’t an ST chip would you have found this process more complicated? Love the cnc skills as well, routing plastic doesn’t look so nice, you are certainly braver than me!

  • @fluffycritter
    @fluffycritter 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I find it amazing that the USB switcher was running a microcontroller with so much firmware code on it. It seems like the entire device could be driven with a simple counter and MAYBE a 555 timer (to automatically advance if it finds itself on an input that doesn’t come up within a few seconds). But I guess microcontrollers are cheaper than a couple of ICs now.
    I also wonder what other sorts of switchers are built using the same basic setup and template firmware.

    • @TheRealFlamingNinja
      @TheRealFlamingNinja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not even convinced that µCs are cheaper in this instance I think it's probable that the development budget was constrained too heavily for a discrete analogue solution. It's much easier to pay an intern/junior tech to turn your fully featured KVM switcher in to a USB only switcher than to pay an engineer to design one from the ground up.

    • @fluffycritter
      @fluffycritter 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRealFlamingNinja Yeah, the fact there was an unpopulated IR receiver is also pretty telling. I'm betting the device started life as an HDMI switch.

    Must be one of the key elements if firmware hacking.... being able to judge "this code does something worthwhile" vs "this is just garbage left over from an old codebase".... especially when there's so much of the latter thatit's almost like trying to "map" DNA.
