  • Finally debugging an old project. It's a mess but we can work with this.
    Thank you to my supporters who make these vids possible, / scanlime

    This is like a murder mystery story where you are both the detective, the murderer, and the victim.

    A lot of the noise you were seeing on the scope is due to the long probe ground wires - for measuring this sort of stuff you really have to use a very short (

      Hi Mike, you can see that short ground in some of the shots. I think I was using the long terrible ground lead mostly for measuring the grounds that were already terrible for other reasons too :D

    One of the best videos to sum up embedded debugging. Need to look everywhere until you find the basic error that throws everything out of whack.

    I can commiserate. More than once I've been sure my problem is hardware - transient spikes messing up the uC or something, added random capacitors and filters... no dice, and then eventually realize it's software. Most recently a math error causing writes out of bounds for what should have been a ring buffer.
    Related the Parallax uCs, I really liked the step by step debugger support that the SX28 had. (formerly Ubicom/Scenix Semiconductor before Parallax bought it)

    Excellent video, as always. I'm surprised the problem was not with a long flat cable running next to the motor. It should be picking a lot of noise.

    What were you using to salvage those caps off the disk drives (around 8:30)? Was it just flux paste and a heat gun? Used to use desoldering tweezers for salvaging SMD components, but I don't have them at my new job, so I've been doing it the dumb, destructive, ineffective way with a normal-tipped soldering iron. This seems much more effective (and obvious).

      I think it is the atten 850b hot air station. There are tons that look very similar: Hakko 850b, quick 850b/a, “ random brand” 850a/b. I just got the new atten ST-862D. It is super solid. Another good option is SUGON 8610DX. There are plenty of hot air stations pick one in your price range that meets your needs. Bulk heat is easy so cheap ones will work. Reballing an ic and need everything to survive get a nicer one.

    Great fun spending hour debugging hardware only to find out it's a software issue, if only it was easier to get some kind of feedback from the microcontrollers but then where would be the fun in that?

    What is the vibrating tool you use to scratch away at the solder mask?
    Also; seems like you should include a watchdog timer in case of crashes -- won't help with the cause, but at least will help prevent it running away on you.

    • @scanlime
      @scanlime  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The vibrating tool is just an x-acto knife sped up a lot in post :) A watchdog would have been great but I didn't have one available, and didn't get around to building a standalone watchdog.

    • @fgbhrl4907
      @fgbhrl4907 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scanlime haha, ok. I might try gluing an xacto blade to an electric toothbrush one day -- been trying to find a good automatic way of scratching away at soldermask.
