  • Thank you for joining me in wishing Slugger a Happy Birthday! They grow up so fast!
    Want to see where it all began? (you don't): • Test Footage Extended ...
    I always get requests for where to find the music I make in these videos, so I'm going to have to start linking it in each video description: rrslugger.band...
    I create all of the photography and stop motion animation you see in these videos. Brett creates all of the original artwork.
    Thanks for watching everyone!

    Happy Birthday Slugger! Thanks for a great first year on TH-cam everyone!
    I don't think the videos on this channel are typically this self-congratulatory, but we just so happened to hit the 1,012 milestone just a few days before Slugger's birthday, so the timing was a little funky. We'll be back to our regular scheduled programming soon enough! 😅
    As a teacher and small touring musician (on top of the whole TH-cam thing), May/June are tough months for me; hopefully this won't impact production too much, but we'll have to see how it goes! I have one highly requested video nearing completion and another few waiting in the wings, but I promise I won't rush anything out until I'm happy with it.
    Quality standards > upload schedule.
    Thanks everyone! ❤️️

    If I had to name my favourite Content Creators here on TH-cam, it would be Trikbrix and you. Great videos every single one of them! And since Trikbrix inspired you to do these videos and me to write reviews of my classic sets, it seems Jamie really set a spark in some people, even if his went out too soon.
    Congratulations for one year on youtube and let there be many more to come!

    Happy birthday, Slugger! I found TrikBrix through his review of 6254 Rocky Reef, which was my very first LEGO System set right before moving on to Rock Raiders. So I'm really glad you came along! Your explanation of how you optimized the stop-motion clips makes perfect sense. I have a background in Flash animation, and I dabbled with stop motion back in the LEGO Studios era as well, so I know firsthand just how intensive and time-consuming the animation process can be! I have much less energy for such a process or even to avoid 0% days now (in fact, 0% days make up the majority of my time these days), and my narration is nowhere near as eloquent as yours, so I stick to written reviews with still photography (and I'm *way* behind even on those!). Having said that, I have some ideas for that video I mentioned I'd like to run through you for suggestions :) Thank you for the excellent content, and here's to another year!

  • @TheHylianBatman

    I appreciate all the production effort and values that go into every episode. With experience in filmmaking, I'm well aware of just how time-intensive it can be. My respect and admiration for this channel grows with every upload.
    While I respect those who do building videos, and would gladly watch them if I were scoping out a set, as a deep, info-heavy retrospective, I unfortunately have to agree that it just wouldn't work.
    I'm also in the same boat as you; an adult fan of LEGO with a very long time away from the product. But my reasons are more mundane. I still liked LEGO, but they wouldn't put in the effort to make Doctor Who sets, so I decided not to support them. A decision I will surely regret more and more as I get older.
    What a cool look behind the curtain! I wanted to share with you a tale: years ago, I was purchased a tote full of LEGO (and some other random things) by my mother, to help burgeon my otherwise set-heavy collection. As I went through the tote and filtered out pieces, I found many things, including peaks of Hogwarts and the front and middle part of a red ship's hull. However, I found numerous pieces that I could never identify.
    A grey scoop, with a matching brown hatch. A large, grey piece that had 4 round Technic connection points on the outside. A smaller grey scoop with a logo of a drill inside. A laser. A red octagonal hatch with some kind of separate siren piece on the top. Teal vents and monitors.
    Because of your videos, I now know that the octagonal hatch is from Alpha Team, and all the other pieces come from the Chrome Crusher. I'm guessing whoever owned the tote previously had plenty of money in the late-90's.
    Now, regrettably, I'm terrible with colors. There's no way on God's green Earth that I would ever be able to tell the difference between Light Grey and Light Bluish Grey, so the odds of me going through the entire tote to try and sift out the pieces to try and build the Chrome Crusher are slim... but not none. I'm not sure what use it would be, anyways; I have neither the top of the battery compartment for the laser, nor the chrome drill! As yet, anyways.
    Another, shorter tale: I've had some snap-together toys for a very long time that I couldn't identify. When I watched the Galidor video, the arms on the robot (Sadly, I forgot the name) reminded me of it, and I thought to myself "I wonder if I had that and just forgot about it". And then, about midway through the video, I figured out what I had.
    I have the McDonald's Galidor toys, at least two of them. The green top with the black bottom and the one with the arms I mentioned. I guess they were purchased for me when I was very young, and it's taken me this long to figure out what they are.
    What are you going to help me figure out next? I appreciate this channel's connection with the deep history of LEGO, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
    I only wish Mega Bloks fans were as intense. I've got this island...

    • @RRSlugger
      @RRSlugger  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Love it - thank you for the great read! ❤️️
      There's something so inherently satisfying about being able to look at a pile of Lego and identify where each piece likely originated from or other cool trivia about the parts. I'm so happy my videos could help you out with that!
      And honestly, I relate to not being able to tell the difference between the Light Greys - if only I had a nickel for each time I had to disassemble something after realizing I accidentally slipped in a Light Bluish Grey piece by mistake, haha.

    • @TheHylianBatman
      @TheHylianBatman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RRSlugger You're welcome!
      Yeah, the unfortunate thing about my collection is that my parents weren't particularly wealthy, so there's all sorts of bricks from all sorts of sources in there. I remember we got a dinosaur bag of bricks from some used store, and that tan still permeates my builds. It's not even LEGO bricks, I think they're Mega Bloks. I know that's heresy to the modern reader, but when I was young, I didn't know any better.
      I'd love to go through the whole thing now and divide it back up, but that would mean deconstructing everything I've built in the last 20 years- all that history and sentiment lost? Not any time soon.

  • @Robot_Eva
    @Robot_Eva 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The production and style of your content is definitely its most appealing quality to me. There's a genuine love for the material being presented that i feel is often lost when it comes to larger reviewers and lego content creators. I enjoy the more heartfelt vibe you bring to the hobby. Furthermore, I hope we get to continue to see that sincerity from you in whatever projects you pursue in the next year of RR Slugger. Great job

    • @RRSlugger
      @RRSlugger  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Eva! I know it's maybe not the typical way to run a Lego channel, but it's something that feels authentic to me (and I think that's important). I think many times content creators are "forced" into talking about sets/themes that they don't have much love for or first-hand experience with, and this is something I try to avoid as a matter of principle.
      Hopefully this mantra is evident in the final product! 😊

      Thanks! I forked up some good money for decent gear right out of the gate and I think that has proven to be the right call. Good gear goes a long way towards a good product!

      @@RRSlugger indeed it dose! And yes it shows!
      But off topic: I know it’s a stupid question buuuuuut, do you think you’ll do any Knights Kingdom 2 sets? I think the theme could make for some nice retrospective videos, and if you didn’t know this little fact: it’s the most hated castle theme

    • @RRSlugger
      @RRSlugger  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ClassicStudStudios That theme came a little bit after my time collecting Lego when I was young; as a result, I don’t actually have any of those sets unfortunately. Somebody else will have to take up the retrospective torch with that theme. 😊

      @@RRSlugger haha that’s all fine and dandy don’t worry!😊 but I do think I’m getting a full of the sets for Christmas ( we found them at the farmers market ) so maybe I can do a one off episode of the two sets 😮
      And now my fallowup Question: will there ever be any castle Retroactives? It’s my favourite theme and I have no intention of being rude or needy about it, just a curiosity kinda thing 😊

      @@ClassicStudStudios Nice!!
      I do have a number of older Castle sets, but I have modified them quite a bit; I would have to restore them to their original state before doing any reviews… and I would also need something to say about them, haha. 😅 Sometimes having enough to warrant a full script is the tough part!

    What do you mean by “decade long dark age”? What happened slugger?!

    • @RRSlugger
      @RRSlugger  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I basically stopped collecting with any serious drive after Power Miners, and even then I only dipped into 3 sets from that theme. It wasn't until a little over a year ago that I got back into it and had to play some catch-up!

    Happy Bday Slugy!
    Ever since TrixBrix left TH-cam, their was a huge hole for high quality vintage's Lego review. I never thought we get another great channel like him, But here you are, here to stay.
    But another thing that we can learn from TrixBrix is, TH-cam burnout is real and can hit anyone including you. So take your time, no one is rushing you.
    Anyway here for the next great year of Lego reviews.

      Thank you! I'm honoured to help fill the void left behind by his departure.
      This is all good advice that you are pointing out; as a teacher for my day to day, I am well acquainted with burnout and (hopefully) how to mitigate it, but you're right - it can affect anyone.
      Honestly, my biggest worry is that reading & responding to comments may one day become too time consuming and actually take away from making videos, haha. I'm still thinking about strategies to keep both in my life because I value them so much. ❤️️

    • @RRSlugger

      Thank you! The short answer is "lots"!
      The long answer is that I usually start pre-production on a video 2 months out (that includes scripting, photography, making purchases, etc) so typically I have a pretty good idea of what the next 2 months will look like at any given time.
      Beyond that, I sketch out my long term plans; it might sound ridiculous, but I essentially have the next 7(!) months of videos roughly planned out. 😅
      Sometimes plans change of course, (most recently with the surprise crunch for the 1,012 Sub Special), but by and large I like to have an idea on where I'm going. 😊
