      Yeah Australia is pretty limited but at least you have some amazing native species to keep. However we are permitted for everything we own and permitting is strict on FL. FWC (law enforcement) inspects our facility every year as part of the requirements for our licenses

      Yeh the native species here are under licence, these days I just breed diamond pythons and blotched blue tongues, I used to breed lots of bhps and womas when it was worth breeding them Can't keep your American species without a exhibitors permit or similar.

    I somehow missed this episode. We only have ten animals, and they are a lot of work. 140 animals. Wow! We do have more cats than you. We also have two parrots. I did not see any birds in your collection. Our old Gold-capped Conure is over 30 years old now. I read their average life expectancy in captivity is 20 years. He's a feisty old bird. He might outlive me. Our neurotic, fowl-beaked African Grey is a youngster at 15. I have only one snake now. She's our 23-year-old Red-tailed boa constrictor that I got as a newborn. She's about 10 feet long. I have mostly had boas and pythons over the years. I've never kept venomous snakes. I have relocated rattlesnakes. I am impressed that you all have the energy to take such good care of all your animals.

    If I was around, Rhett would be my best friend! Man though.......every morning I bitch and moan about feeding then cleaning up after 6 exclusively indoor kitties (huge and beautiful and hungry wild coyotes right in our back yard!) including puke and little box misfires but after watching your complete animal menagerie here..........nothing compared with what you two have going on!! I do love that 'Tobie house connection' pass way though!! Remarkable feat of engineering there!! Jim C.

    • @TobiesTroop
      @TobiesTroop  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hahaha, house kitties are exclusively a Taylor job (I'm allergic). Glade is our litterbox misfire man and the little black fluffy kitty is our puker. If she doesn't get her special food, you will hear that terrible "yak yak yaaaaak" and the dogs will run over and try and beat us to it LOL. Glad your kitties are indoor, so sad when people.let them out just to get ran over and eaten by coyotes. Here the panthers love to eat the neighborhood cats. Thanks Jim, it took a lot of thought and figuring to make sure we had something that would work and hold up to those crazy little tyrants!

    • @jimc6687
      @jimc6687 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TobiesTroop Some comfort learning we're not alone here with 'misfiring' pet kitties and yes.......that all too familiar and dreaded 'yak...yak..' sound often heard in the middle of the night and in the darkened main body of our home that force us to 'walk softly and carefully and carry a powerful flashlight' as we try to avoid stepping on these warm and squishy offering of apparent distaste for the expensive cat food we feed our half dozen cats. We do not have a doggie clean-up crew and thanks for this picture right before lunchtime!! :>) One thing that was cool.......and I may have mentioned this before to you guys but.at our sweet North Port, FL home on that canal and near Florida preserves we had Florida panthers but we also had a local family of bobcats that used to come up to our screened-in porch and roll playfully on the other side of the screen from our cats in what looked like an attempt to make friends. The look on the faces of our kitties was anything but receptive back at their four times bigger relatives!! Jim C.

    All your animals are the bestest! My doggo, Cheech, is getting up there in age and I'm starting to see him losing energy and deep sleeping a lot and it's breaking my heart cause I dread the day... (You know what I'm speaking of). Wish they could all live forever. Got a green tree boa and a false water Cobra that I love. They'll probably outlast me lol. I have amevias living under my trailer right now and they're super cool to see! Always wanted to know what you guys and gals music preference is? I am in a band and we're about to release a song called "One Hundred Pacer" and Its about a guy counting down his final steps after being bit by a one hundred pacer viper. Thought you might like it! ☺️🤘🐍

    • @TobiesTroop
      @TobiesTroop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh man, I know. It's just not fair dogs dogs don't get to live that long. If I could have copper for the rest of my life that would be amazing green tree as fwc are both really fun snakes, but in different ways. Ya know we just started getting the amievas over here too, I always think they are a small tegu at a distance lol
      So gonna sound super weird and likely sociopathic, but I don't really listen to music much. Not that I don't like music, but I'm a weirdo who listens to podcasts and adiobooks. BUT I will listen to anything when it does come to music and would love to hear a song about a 100 pacer, super cool snakes so send the song on over! Tay mostly listens to whatever is on the radio

    Happy Thanksgiving. I'm wondering how you got your hands on these V. ammodytes. They are highly protected over here in Europe and you hardly can get a permission to keep them. And I'm always fascinated by your Wagleri vipers and your huge collection of the A. squamigera.

    • @TobiesTroop
      @TobiesTroop  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Werner, the ammodytes I got from a captive bred European shipment. A friend of mine imports and I was able to snag a couple (2016) legally. I believe they come from Germany, from what I'm told there are several places people can legally keep and breed them there? They then send offspring over here, I see them for sale sometimes. They even have a albinos and red ones. We just have trouble breeding them here bc its so hot compared to what they are use to. I've tried cooling them in a fridge for a few weeks and they still slugged out.

    • @wernerpoeschl0510
      @wernerpoeschl0510 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TobiesTroop You can find places where they are bred everywhere (blink-blink - if you know what I mean). If you remember I'm from Germany and I kept all sorts of the genus Vipera. Although I had for most of my snakes a special permission and the correct paperwork but you know.... sometimes you are overwhelmed by excitement when you come across a snake that is rare and hard to find. Saying that, a few of the snakes in my collection were 'legally' bred but the papers (CITES) that you got with the snake didn't look really legit. But that was all in the 80's and 90's. I had to give up on my hobby in the end of the 90's due to health issues. I also kept V. ammodytes but same as you I wasn't successful in breeding them but that was probably because I had to give up on my hobby a bit too early. My male V. ammodytes was probably too young at the time when I gave the snakes away.
      I know it's hot over there where you are. And I suppose you do not have a basement where it's a bit cooler? That would be a place to cool the snakes down at the end of September to mid October. Then transfer the snakes in a box with moist soil and put them in the fridge. The first 2 to 4 weeks on a temperature of 10 - 12° Celsius (sorry, I'm too lazy at the moment to convert the temperature to Fahrenheit). And after this period decrease the temperature once more to 5 - 8° Celsius. Keep them that way for about 2 months. And always pay attention that the soil is kept moist. After these 2 months start to slowly raise the temperature the other way round. Best temperature to try mating them is 20 - 24° Celsius. Although V. ammodytes love hotter temperatures but out in the nature they start mating in Spring and at that time the temperature barely reaches a 25° Celsius mark.

    • @TobiesTroop
      @TobiesTroop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is very true, I assure I would not purchase something if we had any idea that it could have been illegally poached or smuggled. We also had a pair of V.berus that came with the ammos all covered in mites. I do wonder if it's like here where you can get permits for captive bred species and have ID numbers and proof of where they Came from and where they go.
      Looks like I missed the cooling time Frame. I'd like to try and breed them so maybe get a fridge for next year and cool down my specks as well. Nope no basements in Florida, you dig a foot or two into the ground and water is coming out lol
      Sorry to hear you had to give up your collection, it can be a very rewarding hobby

    • @wernerpoeschl0510
      @wernerpoeschl0510 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TobiesTroop I didn't want to say that any of the snakes you keep was bought illegally. Sorry if it sounded that way. I think it would be much harder to smuggle some protected European snakes to the U.S. than importing them legally. I only told how it was for me back in the days and what I came across. Especially when the Cold War ended the borders to the Eastern Europe Countries opened more and more. I've met a lot of people on Expo's and asking the right questions or telling the right stories could open doors to almost everything. But you knew exactly that these animals where illegally bred or poached. And the papers were most of the time faked. But as said sometimes you couldn't resist when you got the chance to get something very rare.
      I don't know how much the situation has changed in the last 25 years and I also don't know how much the regulations have changed. Back in the days a lot of things were much easier. Especially when you didn't live in one of the big citys. Of course you had to register your snakes a the local City administration telling, where you had bought them and who had sold the snake. But Germany is a small country surrounded by a lot of other countries and no one took the effort to check if an address from, for example, the Netherlands or the Czech Republic is legit. Also the laws in some of the neighbouring countries were different to the German laws what made the situation even more complicated. And the officials in the City administrations mostly were familiar with mammals but barely with reptiles. That made it easy to tell them anything. I'm pretty sure you would have been able to register a Retic with the papers of a Boa constrictor and nobody would have been suspicious.
      For your ammodytes:
      Since your snakes aren't used to the natural season changes you could simulate a winter period at any given time. You begin with shutting down the lights and the heating systems. Usually that should lower the temperature in their enclosure at least for a few degrees. Then place them in a box (I used smaller plastic terrariums) with moist soil or any other substrate that can be kept moist. After that place the plastic terrarium (or the box you transferred your snakes to) in a cooling box (I don't know if this is the correct term) that was cooled down ahead of that action. Do not connect the cooling box to a power supply (if it's an electric cooling box), it's just to keep the warmer surrounding temperature out of the box. Check the temperature in the box every day. A temperature of 18° Celsius (64° Fahrenheit) would be great. Keep the snakes at that temperature for about 2 weeks. Don't worry that there is no light in the box it doesn't matter. After these 2 weeks put the box/terrarium your snakes are in into a fridge with a temperature control. Lower the temperature down to the temperatures that I mentioned in my other comment. And then wait. Only check the substrate every now and then it always should be kept moist (not wet). The snakes should be held at that temperature for about 2 months at least. And after that reverse all the actions.
      Before you start with such a simulation feed your snakes very well. They won't eat during their hibernal rest which means they have to be fat to go through all these stages in a good condition. Also make sure the snakes pooped completely before you cool them down. And keep them separated in different boxes during the hibernal rest. These snakes a solitary animals in nature and hardly use snake dens as Rattlesnakes or Garter Snakes do. Put the female ammodytes a few days earlier back into the enclosure so she can spread pheromones if she's willing to mate. Then, maybe a week later, put back the male ammodytes. If the female has spread some pheromones the male will immediately start to search for her.
      You can repeat this procedure every six months. But be aware that the ammodytes enclosure will be empty for about 4 months while you put the snakes in hibernation rest.
