  • If, like me, you love the style lines of the Closet Core Pietra Pants sewing pattern, but you don't love its elasticated back waistband, then here's a tutorial explaining how I eliminated that elastic for a clean/flat finish with an invisible zip closure.
If you have any questions or comments please do leave them below and I'll do my best to get back to you. Hi Michelle I enjoy listening to you. You have, whatever people need to have, to be successful at explaining and presenting this information with an easy to listen to style. I hope you will continue to provide more interesting videos.

I just finished disassembling some Pietra pants because of the bulkiness of the back elastic. This could be a solution to my issue if I add a few inches to the back piece and add darts and a facing as you've done. I think I can save these pants and make 'em wearable. I'd rather do the back zipper than the side zip. Thanks, Michelle!

Wonderful, thank you. I’ve just made a pair of the wide legged trousers and would definitely prefer a zip and no elastic. Haven’t decided yet whether to put the zip in the side or back but can’t wait to give this a try. Brilliant!

Thank you for taking the time to generate this excellent tutorial. I retired and have been working on my sewing skills once again. I want to try this version of the pant next. You are skilled at explaining this pattern. Much appreciated.

I tried to do this same hack recently but gave up - I attempted to force one VERY large dart which looked ridiculous. You’ve given me the tools to try again - thank you!

Eek yes beyond a certain point a single dart just can't cope! Glad this looks helpful to you and I hope it goes well if you try it!

Thank you for this. I have used another hack that left the back waistband in place (shortened) and put the darts (one dart on each side and quite a bit off at the sides) in below in the pant leg part. I had to shorten the rise quite a bit, since I am rather short waisted. I also put the zipper in the back. I think I will Try your hack the next time😄

Thanks Natalia! That method sounds interesting, I guess it depends how much ease you end up needing to take out and then where it feels easy to spread the difference across. The joys of sewing!

So clever!!! I made these with the elastic but I find the view unflattering if I tuck in my blouses. Thanks so much for this!

You're welcome - I almost always wear my tops tucked in for work so that's exactly why I had to figure this out! :)

This is great thank you! Did you still cut the back facing on the fold if you put the zipper in the CB? Im wondering if you would still need to leave the seam allowance

Thanks just what I needed. Just wondered if there was a reason you opted for zip at CB rather than side- was it personal preference? Thanks

I have made these 4 times in linen with the elastic waist (3 shorts, 1 pants view B). I’m planning to make them again in denim & was worried about the elastic being to thick. I am going to try your method with an invisible side zipper. Question - did you have any issues with removing 1 inch from the back side (I need to remove 1.5” from the side - 4.5” total per back half) or did that work out ok?

Hi Lyn, no the side was completely fine - I should have mentioned that at the end, sorry. I’d recommend doing a toile though, even if you only make it in the shorts length that should let you see whether there’s any funky behaviour :) Good luck!
