Just as a side note if you tweak the design slightly- Attach the pockets to the front piece and wrap the back on top of the front, you can make a pair of fall back pants that can make it easier for some wheelchair users (depending on the disability) to deal with things such as toileting transfers with less assistance.
I was thinking about doing something like that for myself actually! I think I'm going to do a super high waist with patch pockets high on the front so I can reach them when I've got my lap strap on, which shuts off access to most side seam pockets
As a recommendation for the iron, for my ancient one, If I need steam, i just use a spray bottle filled with water, and keep the tank in the iron dry. I hope this helps
Hah, I do the same cause my ancient iron will pop the circuit if I try to use the "steam" button.... and I keep using it cause the new iron I have only steams at high settings and ALWAYS steams at high settings, which is the stupidest setup I've ever heard of, thanks for that, Black and Decker, good thing I didn't pay for it. But I'd use the spray bottle with it if I used it more often for my own safety, sometimes I need to get my fingers close to straighten things out and I don't need it blowing steam on me the whole time.
I use a spray bottle of water too because our water has too many minerals in it which would ruin irons. Distilled water is too expensive for me to use it for ironing.

I came up with an idea where the pocket provides the room to get into a skirt or pair of pants, and the waist band buttons, the button can be moved to tighten or loosen for a fair amount of adjustment..

In watching this, I have come up with a solution for a modification to a skirt which I have made, and now I know why I have not been able to get myself started on the pants I cut out. I will make sure that they are flexible when I put them together.

But they're my recommendations from this last months reading.

Just a question - why did you detach the fabric for the cuffs, instead of just taking in like a 1 inch tuck on the inside of the legs? You'd get the same look without having to chop off fabric then sew it back on and finish seams. I can see cutting a separate piece if you wanted contrast cuffs, but for self cuffs I'd be lazy and just take in that tuck.
Like I said in the video, I originally was going to hand paint the cuffs, but I couldn't come up with a design I liked, and the paint I bought didn't match the final dyed color of the fabric. So I just sewed them back on.

You do. Definitely not as easy as unzipping your jeans, but I grab the ties together and they undo quite quickly. The harder thing is tying them back up, especially because this particular fabric is quite slippery, but it's not that bad. Maybe an extra 20 seconds.
They are fab I wanna do a skirt like it but the draw back with the trousers I've seen on a few vids is with the back attaching first u wud have to undo both sides to use the toilet I no someone was saying about working it out so the back attatches last
It's not that big of a deal for me! Not any harder than getting a jumpsuit on or off. My issue is with the ties, they're so long it's hard to keep them from dragging on the floor. But that was a me mistake and an easy fix.

I can't wear nonstretchy women's pants cause I have no hips, thankfully my hip waist ratio makes men's pants work pretty well, though with recent changes in my shape due to core exercise and added fat, my pants are starting to fall down over my stupid lack of hips even though my waist measurement says it's larger than it used to be (lies!). I am planning to make my own version of Secret Pants based on the hakama pattern I've made a few times and there are ways I could make that adjustable even though I don't want the multiple ties that typically hold those up, I was planning to make side buttons or something cause a bit of extra bulk at the hips is a good thing on my figure. Your "draft pants that fit" video is soon on my playlist, I also want to try drafting the trousers from the Keystone Jacket andDress Cutter. Dunno if those'll get past a mockup though since I'm bad at fitting (as in, have worn ill-fitting clothing for so long that I don't know what "it fits properly" actually feels like) and my measurements lie. Well, except my hips, those never lie (just kidding, I can slide a 34" waist band off over my theoretically 39" hips). Worst case scenario, I will trace a pattern off one of the pairs of cargo pants I wear to work, if I can do it before they've all completely disintegrated.
It's definitely hard to fit if you're not sure what a good fit really is. I totally get that. You know what might help is checking out some books/websites about making common alterations. Any one worth their salt will show you pictural examples of a bad fit and a proper fit--might help you gauge what you're aiming for. Also...suspenders are fun and a great fashion statement 🙃

Believe it or not, this is 100% my most asked question about these 🤣 It does require a little forethought and tie wrangling before I sit down to keep it all off the floor, exacerbated by the slipperiness of this particular fabric, but it's not that much of a hassle. 🤷♀️

Unfortunately there is no pattern for this. Just a bunch of rectangles. Maybe one day I'll be able to create digital patterns, but scaling and grading pants is a particularly difficult skill...which I don't have yet 😳 If you want to make something like this, I do have a video linked in the description that will show you how to draft your own pattern, using a pair of pants you already own. Free, and a perfect fit!

One great thing you can do is look on Facebook Marketplace. You can find a lot of free things people want to get rid of right in your local area, even fabric! You can probably share your situation with them, too, and see if folks are willing to drop them off for you!
My Mom, a professional tailor and seamstress,had the same iron problem. She used white vinegar to clean out the mineral build up that causes the splotches of water. Over all a great design. You need a longer front crotch seam to avoid the semi horizontal folds across the hip/groin area. That style of pant was a popular design in the late 40's and thru the 50's called Hostess trousers. They paired a small body hugging top under a very long jacket or vest. My very modish aunt had those pants but they spiked in at her ankles. As a 6 year old I was totally smitten and traded in my Oshkosh overalls for a tiny pair of wrap ankle pants. Even then I was a fashion beast! Love your site and subscribed.

Yes, much better. Tying 3 ties and preventing everything dragging on a dirty, possibly wet, floor in any public washroom would be a nightmare. Set in pockets with a slope, like men's trousers, would have openings covered by the overlap from the back and still allow easy access. Covered openings are a great deterrent in places where pickpockets are present too.

Should have put some interfacing in the waist band even if it was light weight interfacing then the waist and would have turned out even better .plus to give it stability as everything hangs from the waistband
I am familiar with idiot pants going to and working renaissance fairs for the past several years, side seams are left open center seams are sewn a casing at the top to run a cord or whatever through front panel and back pannel. Guys tie the back pannel around the waist to the front, the front pannel then is tied in the back with side seam open they can use the toilet or untie the front pannel and drop the front. Girls tie the front pannel in back, the back pannel in the front. Untie the back pannel hold onto the string, ribbon or whatever you use an drop the back to use the toilet. I've been wanting to figure out with the pant legs so wide, how to add pockets, though we use belts and pouches at fair instead. Windy days the open side seams can be a problem though I have seen and adjusted the fit of the gathers to keep the side seams closed.
Interesting! Never heard of those! Pockets definitely would be hard with the side seams open, even if they were attached to one side, I bet they'd hang out awkwardly...🤔

I like all the gathers and that you can adjust them to overlap too to cover. I'll just have to keep trying and try to make like barbie size before working on something my size(I use fabric that is 54 wide and cut a crotch opeing on the fold and do that twice each length what I need to go from waist to ankle which gives me a lot of fabric to gather on the cord. I have a 30" inseam and usually wear size 18/20. I'm thinking of trying to hang the ol style of pocket in the casing seam somewhere. We will see.
So, bear with me...... If you made the pants exactly the same way: side tabs with a pair of little ties, the a big shaped flap that comes up to cover - tied by a long waist tie...but REVERSED... would it be easier to go to the loo? Okay; you make it so the side flaps and their little ties tie at the BACK behind you. Then the big shaped flap that comes up to cover is the BUM of the pants - then the big waist tie is the same. In theory, you would just undo the waist tie and drop the bum flap to go to the loo - you could leave the little ties done up.... it would LOOK the same with the side pockets and all - but it would open like the bum flap on longjohns.... no?
Hmmmmmmm. It's a thought! I think it'd depend on how deep the back panel was, because I wonder if you could get it deep enough to have all the fabric out of the way to sit down while still keeping it closed on the sides in normal wear, if that makes sense? 🤔 And would the back paenl touch the underside of the toilet, or worse, the ground? It's definitely worth a think, though!

I’ve lost so much weight since I started working I no longer fit into my first pair of jeans and they’re still perfectly good but I need a belt if I want to wear them and I’m tired of buying new pants so I’ll try this on my biggest pair to see how it works!!!!!!!

Yes! They're great for travel, although I'd advise to make the waistband ties significantly shorter, because they're hard to keep off the floor. Overalls would be super cute! Great idea!
I really want to make a couple pairs of these in twill for wearing out in public and a pair in fleece or sweatshirt material for lounging around the house. Now to find the right fabrics and draft my own patterns. I did buy the coquelicot skirt pattern from Wildflower Designs, so that will help.
Mostly just the 17th/18th century methods like hidden spiral lacing behind a panel, usually pinned shut over top. That's the standard method of gown closure through the early 19th century, when you see fall front/bib fronts start, like my trousers here.

LOL! 😆 You could definitely make these less wide. And the ties less long. Those have literally tripped me up!

I am familiar with idiot pants going to and working renaissance fairs for the past several years, side seams are left open center seams are sewn a casing at the top to run a cord or whatever through front panel and back pannel. Guys tie the back pannel around the waist to the front, the front pannel then is tied in the back with side seam open they can use the toilet or untie the front pannel and drop the front. Girls tie the front pannel in back, the back pannel in the front. Untie the back pannel hold onto the string, ribbon or whatever you use an drop the back to use the toilet. I've been wanting to figure out with the pant legs so wide, how to add pockets, though we use belts and pouches at fair instead. Windy days the open side seams can be a problem though I have seen and adjusted the fit of the gathers to keep the side seams closed.
Interesting! Never heard of those! Pockets definitely would be hard with the side seams open, even if they were attached to one side, I bet they'd hang out awkwardly...🤔
@@FantasticalFolliesCostuming I've been trying to figure out how to have pants that wrap like that as just untieing the front to use the facilities is great and I like it. I like all the gathers and that you can adjust them to overlap too to cover. I'll just have to keep trying and try to make like barbie size before working on something my size(I use fabric that is 54 wide and cut a crotch opeing on the fold and do that twice each length what I need to go from waist to ankle which gives me a lot of fabric to gather on the cord. I have a 30" inseam and usually wear size 18/20. I'm thinking of trying to hang the ol style of pocket in the casing seam somewhere. We will see.

So, bear with me...... If you made the pants exactly the same way: side tabs with a pair of little ties, the a big shaped flap that comes up to cover - tied by a long waist tie...but REVERSED... would it be easier to go to the loo? Okay; you make it so the side flaps and their little ties tie at the BACK behind you. Then the big shaped flap that comes up to cover is the BUM of the pants - then the big waist tie is the same. In theory, you would just undo the waist tie and drop the bum flap to go to the loo - you could leave the little ties done up.... it would LOOK the same with the side pockets and all - but it would open like the bum flap on longjohns.... no?
Hmmmmmmm. It's a thought! I think it'd depend on how deep the back panel was, because I wonder if you could get it deep enough to have all the fabric out of the way to sit down while still keeping it closed on the sides in normal wear, if that makes sense? 🤔 And would the back paenl touch the underside of the toilet, or worse, the ground? It's definitely worth a think, though!

Thinking of trying this on my work jeans.? I’ve lost so much weight since I started working I no longer fit into my first pair of jeans and they’re still perfectly good but I need a belt if I want to wear them and I’m tired of buying new pants so I’ll try this on my biggest pair to see how it works!!!!!!!

Yes! They're great for travel, although I'd advise to make the waistband ties significantly shorter, because they're hard to keep off the floor. Overalls would be super cute! Great idea!
I really want to make a couple pairs of these in twill for wearing out in public and a pair in fleece or sweatshirt material for lounging around the house. Now to find the right fabrics and draft my own patterns. I did buy the coquelicot skirt pattern from Wildflower Designs, so that will help.

Rowenta irons are Great irons. Use distilled water to save your iron from chemical build up and DON"T drop your iron!

I'm doing research on size-adjustable clothing. Are there any other methods that you have found?
Mostly just the 17th/18th century methods like hidden spiral lacing behind a panel, usually pinned shut over top. That's the standard method of gown closure through the early 19th century, when you see fall front/bib fronts start, like my trousers here.
reminds me of the wraparound pant from the 70's. you could have done the ties like those.

Nup, that was the whole problem. Instead of erasing, it just turned the marks white 🤷♀️

MUAHAHAHA YES! 😂 Mine took about 4 yards of 60" fabric, but I wasn't trying hard to economize my yardage. And they're insanely wide. 43" around.
