    Really enjoyed that video John. I spent a great week on Alderney in January 1991 doing my IMC rating. Only been back a couple of times so must pay another visit soon.

    Been to Alderney many times before with Aurigny from Southampton. My son Martin achieved his dream and got his PPL at Goodwood last year and is nearly 100 hours solo flying PA28 and 152 from Shoreham.

    Brilliant video, Alderney is one of my favourite places in the world. I've only ever had one flying lesson, but watching this makes me want to take up flying seriously. It must be so cool being able to pop over to the Channel Isles like that whenever you fancy. Really found it useful how you include all the ATC conversations on your video.

    Hi Jon, that is your best ever video. After a long and very stressful day I've so enjoyed that and feel relaxed and ready for the next challenge ahead as it motivated me to keep going and enjoy my flying. Alderney is on my bucket list along with the other Channel Islands to fly to. So glad you decided to go flying as it looked like it energised you too! Have a great weekend!

    My first thoughts are 1) How the hell do you concentrate so well!? My head wouldn't cope with all that you need to do AND listen to ATC. 2) I just wanna say a huge congratulations for achieving such an epic adventure. I love travelling and you have such a wonderful opportunity being the Flying Reporter. The place is stunning! Amazing that you just decided to have a stroll into town, that added to the adventure aspect 👍 Superbly edited!!!

      @@TheFlyingReporter i wouldn't recommend driving or flying with your eyes shut lol I have my class 1 hgv licence, but flying is way more difficult than that lol Amazing work though my friend, I love travel and adventure so thank you for providing such amazing content to watch 👍

    YES!!! Great video!!! I have wanted you to visit Alderney for a long time. My Gran and my Auntie both live on the Island and I used to visit the island almost every year as a kid growing up. 100% recommend taking the family. The 1st week in August is Alderney week, they have all sorts of activities Bertie would love. On the Saturday, to celebrate the last day of Alderney week, there is a touch light procession through the town to the Butes and a big fireworks display. Would highly recommend it. (Book a hotel early as its the busiest week of the year.) Also the Lobster at the Marais Hall is a must.

    Jon, Thank you for the flight. Alderney is definitely a place to fly to. If I ever have a chance I'll go there. The only problem is i'm in the US so a day trip is not in the cards today... Keep up the good work. We'll be looking for you at Oshkosh next year if you can get there. Merry Christmas. and a Happy New Year to you and yours.

    A real throwback for me having gained my PPL there on Alderney in 97.
    Made lifelong friends having done a residential course over 3 weeks.
    No such thing as a stable approach from the kicker at both ends 😅
    Mae West and "Cleared Cap de la Hague, not above one tousand" to begin every sortie. Fabulous times.

    Another lovely video Jon, definitely going to put Alderney on my to visit list now. Re: your dizziness, it might be interesting for you to fly blindfolded as a front seat passenger at various altitudes to see if it's a purely physical phenomenon or mostly psychological... And if you don't experience it when flying commercially where pressurisation is routinely around the 6-8000' mark, I'd suspect it's your mind playing tricks....

    You are 100% right; sometimes if you have little perspective of forward motion, like high above the sea, you can have a vertigo sensation. Without forward perception, psychologically you can sometimes feel like you are stationary and your brain will tell you that you can fall, so it will try to balance you. It's an odd sensation. All of a sudden it can feel like you're standing on top of a very tall, stationary object.

    Great video as usual Jon. I assume this video was recorded pre the European trip and the subsequent engine strip down. In engines we trust for sure ... particularly when you are out over an expanse of water. Here in Australia it's just one large island so our "gliding " can usually be over "tiger country". Trees and inhospitable territory. Love your flying. Cheers Ian

    Vertigo: Have done 6k ft over channel and 8k ft above land but haven't experienced any thankfully.
    Tax: Don't forget to claim drawback on the outbound fuel!

    I also thought it was odd @23:55 (as apparently you did too) when Guernsey approach asked "if you are turning left towards Alderney?" when a. that service previously had announced itself as "radar control" and b. as you say the prior controller you were given via Casquetes (which you also announced subsequently to the next controller on first contact with them) and you had not received further instruction to change course.

    Definitely going to do an Alderney trip in the summer. It's a long way over water though.. Out of interest why didn't you just fly direct (skirt along the Danger Area boundry?)

    There is a phenomenon that I was lectured about when I when through RAF pilot training. It was aimed at us as we would be up at 25000+ ft in our JPs and Hawks. It was described as an irrational apprehension. It is nothing to do with hypoxia. I am sorry I can’t remember the correct terminology, it was a number of decades ago! If I remember correctly the trigger was the increasing curvature of the horizon as altitude was gained. The manifestation was real and varied from individual to individual. I think this is exactly what you experienced.

      That's very interesting. And do you remember if there was any way to reduce the sensation? It's not debilitating, and usually passes quickly.

      Jon, the RAF”s approach was through education, once aware that the sensation could occur it was just a matter of mastering it. I am pretty sure that it faded with exposure. It was an honest report by yourself, you may never experience it again.

      @@gordonbruce2416 I used to get it frequently when I flew at or above 6000ft, and I have heard of junior first officers experiencing it when they first start to flying airliners. I never really did conquer it I just used to stay below that level.

    That is really interesting that you should mention that vertigo business Jon, as I have been asking only this week other TH-cam pilots if they have ever had the experience of going above about 6000 ft and feeling as though if you move the controls too much you will almost fall out. I think it is something to do with the fact at that altitude our eyes can't resolve objects so well on the ground and it feels like you will fall. I used to hate doing aerobatics starting at that height.

    Anyone else spot Farnborough Radar's use of "QSY" to request that Jon changed frequency (at 07:19)? As a very busy Air Traffic Service Unit, Farnborough's controller will have been trying to save time, but I wonder how many GA pilots recognise the term these days? (It comes from the same abbreviation set where we get QFE, QNH and QNE).

    I used to get the same "vertigo" feeling when paragliding if the horizon in front blurred. The answer was to enjoy the "collywobbles" and make a couple of clearing turns. Easier under a paraglider than over the channel.

    Great video, do you ever lean the mixture? My flight instructor has told me to basically never touch it and always run full rich if you've not got an EGT but leaning without one seems to be fairly standard practise for guys flying in the states... Maybe a climate thing? The weather around Barton is not very states like, standard Manchester wet haha.

      Hi. I lean in the cruise, usually above 3000 feet.

      Poh states when to lean and how. Usually above 3000ft or below 75% power.

    I didn't realise you could get a service from Bournemouth radar on a cross-channel trip. I thought you had to use London Information.
    Could Solent radar be an option? (being nearer to your coasting-out location east of the Isle of Wight).

      Solent doesn't provide a LARS service, Bournemouth is the LARS for this area, and then Plymouth Military. Solent might give you a service, esp if you're near their airspace, but they don't have to.

    Oddly enough I think the vertigo could be all of the blue in your field of vision as the sky is blending to the sea. I've experienced the same sensation of loss of balance at ground level looking out over the channel in some conditions. Beachy Head is notorious for this and you can experience a sensation of being drawn closer to the edge even when you're standing at a very safe distance.

    at 11:38 et seq what you are describing might well be the spatial disorientation known as "Break-Off" phenomenon.

    I get the vertigo sometimes too, it's a horrible feeling being in an aircraft alone and not feeling 100%... not sure what it is but it is very annoying

    What exactly does the Bournemouth controller say at 08:07. I hear the similar callsign statement but not the bit before, thought he may have been passing the callsign that was similar but doesn't sound like it.

      And use full callsign, similar callsign on frequency.

    Recently had a lesson doing circuits, and the visibility was so poor I couldn’t see the runway until I was like a mile from it. Had to rely on the instructor to tell me where abouts we were; although I finally got the hang of it.

    Nice and low approach! I noticed you set flaps 2 before final, was it a recommendation? I am just curious. Btw, when you'll go back to France, provence/Nice airspace, hope I will be flying at this time, expecting GBHOR on the frequency!.

      We nearly always use flaps on landing. I think I only used 2 not 3 stages of flaps on this approach because of the strong crosswind.
