I'm an accidental borderline hoarder. No, I don't have heaps and pathways in my home, but I don't even know what I own. I know I get severely overwhelmed when being around it and equally overwhelmed when try to process and discard. Minimal progress, but here's what I'm able to do: 1. If something comes in, something goes out 2. I find 2 things daily to disperse 3. I focus on one spot for a few months. Right now is my kitchen. My gadget drawer: for August and September, if I use something, when it's clean it goes in a jar on my counter. At the end of this month what I haven't used goes bye bye
Your plan sounds good! I have taken down a bunch of decorations and put them in a box in my basement. If I really miss them, I will put them back. I also did a big purge of my home, and paper. It is hard at first, but it gets easier to do every year. I have found that I want some things out to impress others, like this is so cool, I want everyone who comes over to see it. Now I realize it is MY house and the stuff has to make ME happy. I wish you great success. Keep at it!
In regards to children's attention spans. I've chosen to unschool/homeschool my children in order to give them all the time they need to focus on their interests. One of the things you are fighting against to help your child have a long attention span is 12 years of your children's lives being divided up in 45 minute chunks while at school. I realize homeschooling can be a privileged choice, but unless we're going to ask the school system to drastically change how they do things, I believe that homeschooling is truly the only choice we have to allow children to follow their interests at their own natural pace.

I like how the blonde guy said he had brain fog probably from too much podcasts. I have an addictive personality and have experienced being hooked on drugs, exercise, apps, under eating, over eating, tv, etc. now that i am extremely self aware, i realized that i get the same brain fog from being addicted to anything. I literally feel the same amount of confusion from using too much Pinterest that i do from smoking too much pot. And even from too much working out. Balance is key.
I also have this problem. I consume so much minimalism themed input, that I don't produce any output (like decluttering or mental groth stuff) because I'm always consuming. I will try to set "no-input-days" or weeks. So one week i don't consume anything, the next I'm allowed to,... and so on.
As I Hoarder...I believe that I have to keep everything bc I attach an extreme value on the smallest thing. “I spent x amount of money on it” or “I can make this out it!” And the main one, “but I remember when...”. It’s stuff. I know. I’m healing from it and trying to change my thought patterns. You boys definitely help me with that process...especially Josh’s logical explanations...lol !! Gets me every time bc I knows he right!
One small tip for the "but I remember when...". Take pictures of the thing. As you say, it's all stuff. The memories are inside our brain and are triggered when we see something. I can see a ball and think "I remember playing with my dad on saturdays". But the ball doesn't remember. I remember. And more important, I remember when I see the ball. With that logic in mind, seeing a picture of something should trigger the same reaction. The same "I remember when..."
Mati thank you!! I did do that years ago and the pictures didn’t work bc I wanted to feel, see and touch it. But you know why? Because I wasn’t ready to heal from hoarding. But now I am!!! So thank you for suggesting that, I believe it will work now ❤️
Actually it's been shown in those with dementia for instance that being able to touch an object links a memory much easier than pictures do. But I think what we really need to come to terms with is the fear of forgetting (even when we don't have dementia we fear this) because if it's worth remembering we will remember without items.
Last Saturday, I just got rid of my Smart phone and bougth a tiny digital phone (which is only 4 inches) and it Works perfectly!!!! No more whats App, TH-cam, or any other App that can be distracting.All I need is to be able to make phone calls or recieve messages. It does have bluetooth, but I don`t need it. it also has internet but neither I need that. I AM FREE!!!
Carla, I have an old, cheap flip phone and my kids make fun of me and tell me to get a smart phone. I am 63 and don't want to. If I go somewhere, I don't want everyone calling me all the time. Just let me do something in peace!! I don't need the internet everywhere I go! All my kids and grandkids do is look at their phones. You cannot even talk to them anymore, even on holidays. They all sit here and use their phones! If you start a nice conversation, it is interrupted every few seconds by someone's phone.
I totally agree with you. In my case it's a little bit different. I am 46 years old and have an eight year old daughter. She is happy that I don't have a Smart phone anymore. She is very aware of the time that people waste on their gadgets. She says that she is not going to have a Smart phone or a Tablet in the future. On the other hand, other people (except my husband) don't understand why I don't want to become a "zombie" by using these devices. What can I say, patience and respect for those who don't understand our point of view.
@@carlaportocarrero6464 Some gadgets can help us be minimal, like a scanner, so we can throw out photos and papers. But a phone just has too many interruptions for me. I am reading, "Goodbye Things," by Fumio Sasaki. It is quite interesting, and deep.
Great video! Just downsized and no longer have a garage, basement, attic, laundry room, second bathroom, and lost a couple bedrooms. So we got rid of probably between 50 and 75 percent of our stuff. Now, that we are settled in smaller place going through everything again. Wow, it’s amazing how much junk we still have. I was able to find so many things, this morning alone, to get rid of. It is so freeing to have less. I have a question, does having a big screen tv or a coffee pot against being a minimalist?
I heart you guys and love listening. Sad to hear Ryan say doing the pour overs for all his coffee drinker visitors was such a pain… on a superficial level, yes sure, but I was waiting for you to say those moments are more important. That them being there and you being able to share your “simple” life with them, at least in hindsight is most important. Which I believe you’d think is true from what I’ve listened to of you. Idk I guess I do that same thing (not near a minimal but have the mindset and practice going) for my family when there visiting and feel the same as you. But I have to remember, this is how I like my life, and a coffee maker doesn’t suit my household. When they visit, I wanna be happy to stand there and pour as long as it takes and be grateful I’m able to do this for them. 🤷♀️
I have begun to listen to the minimalists podcasts while I'm working on other projects. Catching up on neglected yard work. Now clearing out my stuff as our plan is to become full time RVrs. No choice but to minimalize!
I live in Germany and stores/businesses are closed on Sundays and holidays. This has been freeing. The culture embraces going out for a walk, cafe culture, and festival culture. I have found this freeing.
I have the bigger suitcase but I'm traveling for a month with the medium one and part of the things are not mine (visiting a friend she asked for stuff) and a backpack with the camera. Feeling good about myself!
I just watched you guys on the Rachel Cruze show yesterday. I think i'll end up somewhere in the middle of the spectrum, but I'm certainly attempting to embrace simplifying so I don't feel pulled in so many different directions and can be more present with my 4 year old daughter. and set the example for her that THINGS aren't happiness.I found a checklist for a 30 day journey to minimalism to make some order to the process. Our kids get one episode of a show while my husband makes breakfast. Occasionally on long weekends we will have a family movie and that is it! Teaches them limits and their attention span is amazing! We get loads of outside time, and change up a few toys once every couple of months (My mother in law is our toy library as she is an occupational therapist and uses them for work so we don't have to store everything, just switch things out). Also took me a long time, but I got my husband to finally opt out of the Facebook world. I had to talk to him about it alot but it was worth it and he agrees now that he is free of it!
I absolutely love these episodes and am very inspired!💗 One thing I was distracted by is how little eye contact is shared with the guest speaker in this video. It's a lot easier to make eye contact with the person across from you and as public speakers you may also favor the camera - not wanting to turn your head completely away from the camera. Maybe switch up the layout so the table is angled to see you both in frame on the same side of the table and have your guest across from you both. Just an idea to place more visual emphasis on your guest. As a result, it may result in giving them more speaking time as well.👍
I have a desk with a hutch that was over $2000. when I bought it. It worked when I was in a lager home and brought it with me when I downsized to this smaller home. I have things in the hutch that bring me joy. But the overall desk is a waste of space. I'd love to get rid of it. But I keep thinking of the $2000 I spent on it over 8years ago. What can I do to decide to keep it or get rid of it?
Try to sell it or donate it. The money has already gone, so you will not lose money but get more place and less work with cleaning. When you get rid of it you'll stop it to say "oh I costed sooo much, but now you don't like me. Buying me was a mistake..." I promise you, you will feel free. Greetings from Vienna 🇦🇹
When they talked about spending a whole day at a park and testing your attention span limits, it reminded me of spending a whole day at the beach with my mom and my grandfather. I loved being there. I occasionally took out my phone to take pictures, but other than that, I was just there in the water, and I loved it. I want to go back to the beach.
My son has a very short attention span, so do I! He's successful, happy, loved. He has very little short term memory too. I can't think of any reason I would wish for a long attention span for him or for myself
Its hard for me to sort and get rid of family members stuff . My husband had a sentimental coat I got rid and he was livid. Of all the things he never told me he loved because of memory- he didnt tell me.
What about school yearbooks? I have a chest half filled with these! I never look at them and HATED school so they bring me no joy. But it seems like I should keep them.

We have a set of plates that we only use on Christmas. And I I absolutely hate these plates, but they belonged to my dad’s grandma. So even though we only use them once, they have sentimental value to the whole family, so we keep them.
Chelsi Seewer what about letting them go to another family member to enjoy for a while. You get a break from them and someone else gets a chance to enjoy them. 🙂
Jennifer Ann de la Torre, my parents and my grandmother are still alive, and they really enjoy seeing the plates. They tell different stories about his grandma (so grandma’s mom) while we bring them out. That’s the only reason I have a hard time parting from them. I feel like I’d be disappointing them by getting rid of it.
When I was younger I was always expected to sit and eat dinner with the family, one of my nephews can’t leave the tablet to join us . I’m not judging that , but our values have definitely changed
I packed so much stuff for me and my husband for our honeymoon but I forgot his underpants... That turned out to be a disaster. That's the PROBLEM, if you need it now it's a huge issue. I realize there's a way to figure it out but the mental energy to figure out what would be needed is exhausting and then you don't have the mental energy to recognize you've missed the obvious

I am a hoarder due to my gluttony. It’s an everyday struggle, to not eat too much. It’s an everyday struggle to not buy more stuff. It’s not easy.
Hang in there...seek outside help whether counseling or life coach. You deserve to be free from this load.
