    Duncan not winning a single DPOY should be considered crime! But just like what's said in the video, nba awards are driven by narrative. Duncan doesn't really create any compelling stories since he's so quiet and he also plays for the spurs who is known for their "unselfish" playstyle so it's really gonna be hard for him to stand out. Regardless Duncan is one of the best players of the 2000's and in my opinion is in a 3 way tie between Kobe, Shaq and himself as the undisputed best player of the 2000's.

      I’m surprised he doesn’t have a DPOY but 15 time all-defensive is a ton of recognition lol. If you think he’s underrated because he doesn’t have a DPOY and the reason being “He’s a defensive superstar therefor he should have one” rather than “In year X he was clearly better than person X based on reason X”, If anything, that just shows how overrated rewards like MVP and DPOY are.

I’m not saying the people who did win those years weren’t amazing also, but Aaron Gordon is the best dunk contest participant I’ve ever seen. For titles like DPOY, MVP, FMVP yes, but Scoring, assists, rebounds, steals and block titles are given to the player who averaged the most, and Tim never averaged the most.
      That’s the thing with super complete players, like Lebron for exemple, he only won 1 scoring title and 1 assists title, but he is a waaay better scorer than Iverson who won 4 scoring titles, Harden 3 scoring titles or Kobe and Westbrook 2 scoring titles and he is a way better passer than Harden and Westbrook who won 2 assists titles.
      Look at Giannis and Jokic, the 2 best players in the league right now, they won 0 scoring title and 0 assists titles but they are always in the Top 5-Top 3 in these categories, and for exemple KD has the exact same career average as Lebron wich is 27.1 ppg, but KD won 4 scoring titles vs Lebron 1 because KD was just lucky, he won 2 scoring titles averaging 27.7 and 28ppg, do you know how many times Lebron averaged more than that ? 5 Times, but Lebron was just unlucky, when he averaged 31.4 in 2005 for exemple, Kobe had his career high 35ppg, so these titles mean nothing without context, Lebron is a better scorer than KD, he average just as much and he is just a bit more efficient, and he played like 7 more seasons, we will see when KD will be in year 19, or when he will be 37 years old if his career average is still the same 🤷🏾‍♂️

    the reason centers nowadays don't block as much, is that over half the FG attempts are 3s now..not as many people drive into the paint, therefore less centers are blocking layup attempts... 2.6 in 2017 was probably proportionately higher than 2.9 in the 00s (blocks per close shot attempts)..

    Allen Iverson is a ridiculous choice. He had a relatively short prime and only one really deep playoff run in his career. Even in his best years his stats and especially advanced stats are somewhat underwhelming. I wouldn't even put him in the top 15 of best players to not win a championship. Other modern players like Chris Paul, Steve Nash, Damian Lillard and Harden are solidly ahead of him. Plus Pete Maravich, George Gervin, Dominique Wilkins, Reggie Miller and Patrick Ewing. And way ahead of AI I would put Elgin Baylor, Charles Barkley, John Stockton and Karl Malone. All four of those guys had better peaks, much longer peaks, better overall stats and more deep playoff runs than AI.

    It's not just the lack of DPOY, the whole career of Duncan is extremely underappriciated. The man has 5 rings and just think about the teams he had in those championships. He won his first ring as a sophomore player and he was the star of his team with Robinson aging and being in decline. After that his best teammates have been Parker, Ginobili, Kawhi (only a defender back then) and Bruce Bowen. None of them were superstars, not even parennial all stars. Yet Duncan formed one of the most consistent powerhouse dynasties in the league's history.
    Of course the success of the Spurs was a team effort, just like any other championship. But Duncan was the best leader a dynasty could ever hope for. No drama, just complete dedication and togetherness.

    • @statsknowledge
      @statsknowledge ปีที่แล้ว

      Your comment won't survive the test of time. Robinson, Parker, Ginobili, Kawhi, and Coach Pop will all be HOFers (and not simply because they played with Duncan). Your narrative is a special one trying to say that Duncan did it all on his own, which is the opposite of reality. He always played with at least one future HOFer, and he was always on a squad that was supposed to make the playoffs, arguably every season was championship caliber. I fully agree on the leadership part, which doesn't show up on the stat line.
      Also, you should check out the 2014 Finals stats. Kawhi was already much more than a defender.

    John Stockton has two of the most untouchable records in NBA history: steals and assists. He was consistently great on both sides of the ball. Doesn't even get honorable mentions on these types of lists.
    People say the Jazz would have won two championships had Michael stayed retired. I believe they could have beaten Michael's Bulls with a different head coach. Sloan was a powerful leader, and he got a lot out of his players, but he was not tactical. For example: the rigorous sub-schedule. They'd pull the starters like clock-work, regardless of the game situation.

    I see a lot of Duncan comments. Agreed, he is generally underappreciated, but he's not underrated. In 19 years, Duncan was always on a squad that was supposed to be in the playoffs. He came in during the tail end of David Robinson's career, who was still legit for Duncan's first four seasons. After that, Duncan was truly "the man" for four seasons until Parker and Ginobili gained enough experience. Then, at the tail end of Duncan's career, the Spurs had Kawhi who won DPOY during Duncan's final two years and Kawhi and Aldridge led the Spurs to the best record for a Duncan squad at 67-15.
    Duncan was an amazing player who was always on a playoff, arguably championship, caliber team. He did EXACTLY what he was supposed to do with his circumstances. Plus, it's pretty nice to have a competent coach for all those years.
    As for the DPOY, it is definitely surprising, but for the better part of the first half of Duncan's career, Mutombo and Zo were blocking a lot more shots and then Ben Wallace won four. Maybe Duncan should have won it instead of Metta World Peace or Marcus Camby.

      @@Kawaii-hh9dw I would rate Tim Duncan, Charles Barkley, Kevin Garnett and Dirk Nowitzki higher than Malone at the 4 spot. Malone could not create his own shot and really scored so much due to longevity and great passes from Stockton. Barkley and Garnett could score off the dribble and were way more explosive and skilled. Garnett and Duncan have waaaaaay more defensive team selections and both won championships and so did Dirk Nowitzki as the only all star against a stacked Heat team.
      Thinking hard about the best point guards of all time ....Magic is clearly number 1, followed by Curry (who is not a typical PG for me - similar to Iverson) and I would pick Isiah Thomas before Stockton as well...if we count Iverson as a PG I would pick him over Stockton as well but Iverson was really an undersized shooting guard.
