Homeless Man Was a Lawyer for 33 Years and Is Now on the Streets of Washington DC

  • Last night I met a wonderful homeless man. Bruce is kind and gentle with simple desires. His first wish all he asked for was a warm bed without bedbugs!
After Bruce gave permission for the interview, I started to record. It was cold, and snow was coming down. The camera lens and equipment I used is for stationary interviews, so when Bruce began to move, I just followed along the best I could. A bit of this is out of focus, and this production sure is not the best. Bruce's umbrella kept hitting me and the camera. I was worried about him as we crossed the streets a few times positioned myself to block traffic.
To keep authenticity and integrity, we never edit interview videos, so anything and everything is there - mistakes and all. I decided to upload this because I really enjoyed talking to Bruce and wanted to share that experience with you.
More importantly, Bruce has physical challenges and should be in housing. People see homeless men and women like Bruce and never get to know their stories. Our work is not to show you there is homelessness because we all know there are people living on the streets. Our work is to educate the public that homeless people are humans. They are real people.
Bruce was a lawyer for 33 years. After his wife died of brain cancer, he ended up homelessness. He traveled to Washington DC to see his daughter. She would not have anything to do with him. Bruce has lived in a homeless shelter for the last two years.

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as TH-cam, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

You never know until you’re in this mans shoes how he ended up this way. Medical bills bankrupt a lot of people. We are so lucky in the U.K. to still have the National Service Health which started in 1948. Basically a system where the public pay small contributions taken from their salary. We get more to less free healthcare and don’t have to pay bills for operations or prolonged hospital stays. I saw a documentary about a patient having a spine operation lasting eight hours which involved two surgeons and about eleven theatre staff. One of the surgeons said the operation alone cost about £30,000 not including aftercare and future physiotherapy. Some people here still moan about the N.H.S. but they are lucky not living in the U.S.A. where people have to pay for medical insurance. In the U.K. we don’t have to worry whether any treatment will be covered by medical insurance. Currently the N.H.S. costs £130 billions a year and increasing due to high demand from an ageing and growing population. It is almost certain that future N.H.S. treatment will be based on means testing. The N.H.S. has its faults but to the moaners in the U.K. be damn glad you still have it.

"Grant Smith" There have been those who I have loved who have died. I never went to pieces so as to become homeless. That is not really" love " rather than a certain narcissism. You feel sorry for yourself for not having that person around. Heck. Everyone has to die sometime. I would be more sad about how the person died , caner or severe painful illness, than the death itself. I would think that death took away the person's misery. I have felt sorry for people who lived a miserable life, not that they died. I would be sad to an extent but it is odd to me that some people wrap their lives around someone else and it is as if they invest their emotions in a way that is unhealthy and self defeating and counter productive. I can accept, psychologically, that certain loved ones have died and passed on. It is part of the lives we live. I don't think I wish anyone who has died to come back to life again. It was their time. It is time to move on until it is your own time.

No one is seeming to take into account what kind of person he was or is for his daughter to reject him in the first place. Especially after the death of his wife. You don’t reject a parent over nothing. Sad as it may be, she must have a reason.

After this man lost his wife, "the love of his life (it really hurt)", he lost his will to be engaged in life. People need purpose and belonging. Without a sense of belonging there is no purpose to be engaged.
He went to see his daughter for a second chance for belonging and she turned him away as well. A second major blow to this man's desire for belonging and purpose.
Finally his said he really just wanted to die. That was a cry for sympathy or empathy which translates into a cry for a sense of self worth and belonging.
Notice how he starts to brighten up when Mark started encouraging him. Between the lines the man was asking Mark if he thought he had value and if he would be willing to care about him and be his friend.
People need to feel that they have something to contribute to their community. It gives them a sense of self worth. When they lose their sense of community, they lose their sense of purpose with it because community is where we direct our purpose.
Him being homeless was not directly affected by just losing his house and job but rather indirectly by losing his sense of purpose and belonging when he lost his wife and daughter.

That is precisely why as human beings we need to have a personal relationship with God, our Creator. This way when we loose everything we hold dear in life, we still have hope and faith to carry on, knowing that this is a very temporary existence, and life eternal awaits us.
Horatio Spafford lost his business and four daughters and three sons in the 1800s. In response to this tragedy he penned the the following hymn which has brought comfort to countless grieving souls:
"It Is Well With My Soul
      "
When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul
      It is well
      With my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
      Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul
It is well (it is well)
With my soul (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o my soul
It is well (it is well)
With my soul (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul
It is well (it is well)
With my soul (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul

Given his income level he is definitely elite. "In political and sociological theory, the elite (French élite, from Latin eligere) are a small group of powerful people who hold a disproportionate amount of wealth, privilege, political power, or skill in a society." Google
Politically he hung out with the Clintons and was probably involved with other politicians or in politics, in different ways, before becoming President. I could look up examples of that if you want.
Obama is also elite, both politically and financially, but unlike Trump he wasn't born that way and had to work his way there.

Lucky for me I had good credit and some money in the bank, so I was able to purchase another vehicle. I could have easily been in a position where I was unable to replace the vehicle and that would have started a chain reaction and a downward spiral into poverty and lack.

Dad had to work or be actively looking for a job. We moved to Phoenix eventually then Texas and made it here to Missouri on 20.00, me my brother and my Dad. We left my mom. I didn't see her for almost 15 years and saw her once in the interim. I got to have my mom though for the last 4 yrs of her life before she died of cancer. I was very happy with that. I AM a loser too fragile to even live my own life cause in reality nobody will hire my loser ass or wants anything to do with me cause i'm way too brown and ugly and fat and "i look liKE I HAVE NO ENERGY" OR I "LOOK LIKE I DONT WANT TO DO ANYTHING", OR CAUSE I'M SINGLE I'M TRY TO GET A. JOB TO FIND MY FUTURE SPOUSE!! im a female not a guy in real life, this is how they denigrate women in society, i wil never make it in this fucking world!! NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY TO MAKE YOURSELF LOOK PRESENTABLE, THEY WILL ALWAYS TRY TO FIND ONE LITTLE THING TO MAKE YOU LOOK LIKE A TERRIBLE PERSON TO THEM IN THEIR EYES!!

Many children have to cut ties with their parents if they are abusive to them. Often, no one else ever sees the abuse but them, so the kids get judged for saving themselves. There's always more to the story.

We thank you for your dedication, this world is Wonderful but unfortunately we haven´t made it that way.

I read some of comments about this man. I’m ashamed of some of you.
He was not drunk. You cannot get a bed if your drunk btw!!!! And even if he was , so what!! If you lost everything that you loved you might do the same. I don’t know his story, I don’t know if drinking or drugs brought on the barrier between his children or not. But it shouldn’t matter people.
I recently buried my daughter at the age of 27.
No matter how poor her life choices were I NEVER LET HER DOWN. I was there to help her no matter the time or place. Sometimes no matter how much we spend on rehabs and assistance, the addiction often wins the battle for life or death. My life will never be the same, I will never place my head down on the pillow at night and feel at peace. My life has been dramatically reduced to just existing and nothing more. But I have a home that’s paid for and it’s warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I am truly blessed and because of that I feel guilty. I shouldn’t feel guilty for having stability in my life but I do when I see how the poor homeless live.
If I lived near this man, I would give him shelter and comfort but sadly I don’t.
I will pray for this man and all other homeless people and hope for a better outcome.
He is sad over his loss and I understand how that feels. But life is for the living and he lives so he has to learn to live in this world without the love of his life. She is still with him and would not be happy or pleased that he continues to suffer when there are choices better than the lifestyle he lives.
I’m so sorry for your loss sir, losing a love one is painful but so is dying on the filthy streets and getting devoured by bed bugs. The choice is clear, the path resides in front of you, it’s now your duty and job to walk this path with your head held up high.
Your children are missing out on a miracle in the making. I’ll pray for you each and every night my friend.
    God bless you
    Be safe
    🙏❤️
