  • No topic gets requested more than the history of Taiwan. In this first of a multi-part series, Laszlo looks at the geologic formation of the island and Taiwan's prehistoric past. How the indigenous Austronesian people of Taiwan migrated throughout the South Pacific, the South China Sea, and beyond is also introduced.
Several encounters between native people living in Taiwan and visitors from Fujian took place during the Three Kingdoms era and in subsequent dynasties. This will also be looked at. Part 1 will take the story up to the Ming Dynasty.

I was born and raised in Taiwan before immigrating to the US. I greatly appreciate your narration of my motherland and found it very educational. Thank you, thank you!
I would love to hear your podcast about Ming Dynasty. 😃

Thank you Mr. Huang. That is quite an endorsement and I am so happy you checked out my channel. Tucked away throughout my channel are a number of episodes concerning China's history during the Ming. I hope you keep listening.

I am loving this! I used to live in Taiwan for 4 years and I now teach a history of Taiwan class in Mandarin at a Chinese immersion school in MN to 7th and 8th graders. We don’t get anywhere near as detailed as you do, but hit all of the same main themes that you bring up. I love learning more details about Taiwan, and can definitely bolster my own teaching with some of your additions. Thank you!!

@32:50-32:52: As a Vietnamese speaker, that sounds to me like "琉球" (Lưu Cầu), which would be the Ryukyu Islands or current day Okinawa; but perhaps back then, still it's own kingdom.

You're exactly right. 琉球 was one of the names for these islands. They were a kingdom from 1429-1879.

The History of Fujian Province is on the list. I hope to get around to it one of these days. I agree. This would be a very worthwhile topic to introduce.

Quite the fascinating history for such an island. I didn't even know they had such an influence on the inhabitants of the pacific ocean, let alone that they were independent for such a long time.

Chinese sailors reached The Philippines, malasia, Indonesia and india centuries before any Europeans. its just unimaginable that the Chinese wouldn't have known about and done some trade with the aboriginals on taiwan for hundreds of years.

I doubt that Wang Dayuan actually went to Taiwan. The Ryukyuan traditional garb includes silk (yellow and red) wrapped around the head and many of the men and women (especially the women) tattooed themselves. I’m not an expert, so take my words with a grain of salt, but I expect Wang Dayuan saw some early form of Ryukyuan tradtional clothing that at this point would have been left untouched by Japanese and Chinese influences.

That wouldn't have been the first time that the Ryukyu Isles were mistaken for Taiwan. I hope you like this series.

Taiwan and Penghu are leftover issues from World War II. See Treaty of San Francisco.
At the time, the U.S. government helped the Chinese Nationalist Party (Republic of China), which had been defeated in the Chinese Civil War, escape to Taiwan, which was then a Japanese colony. Look at Formosa betrayed. Formosa is the original name of Taiwan.
After the Chinese Kuomintang came to Taiwan, it still maintained dictatorial rule, but moved towards democracy under pressure from the United States, and the Taiwanese entered the Republic of China to fight for their rights.
The Chinese who lost their privileges in Taiwan united with the People's Republic of China to steal Taiwan and Penghu.
