  • This is a super long video because I wanted to include everything, so please watch it all before commenting as I try to cover everything and most the 'marketing' related questions are towards the end. I'm scared to put this up but I hope you appreciate the honesty and feel less confused or scared of how advertising works in the content creator world!

As someone who works on the brands’ side of influencer / content creation marketing, I want to thank you for this video. None of it was news to me personally, but so much will be new to the ordinary viewers, and this transparency is invaluable to help put trust back into influencer marketing campaigns. There has been a lot of backlash against content creators recently where it seems like you guys are cashing on promoting consumerism, so it’s refreshing to see you explain this whole work cycle and how much thought and consideration go into it, with so much honesty. Great job!

Idk I think it's nice when people disclose whether something has been given to them for free and whether they had a discount. You say it's a matter of trust and I agree, it's not like I don't trust the content someone makes if they don't mention that something was gitfed but when someone is transparent with their audience in regards to gifts and discounts the content creator gains my respect.

This was-for me- probably your best video ever! I've always trusted your integrity but this my friend, as they say in my circle of friends, is off the chain! Although I'm sure this wasn't your intention, you have scored major points with me for explaining the process so honestly, clearly and transparently. I love to know how things work and not because I want to someday do this myself but because youtube has become a very influential resource of information for me when it comes to buying products for myself and for my family. Thank you so much! I really enjoyed this video.

Ok so, I’ve watched this full video and kudos to you Lily. Good on you for having your say, it’s clear, logical and all totally fair! If there are some people who respond in a negative fashion, personally I feel they should move on... this is how you earn a living and true viewers wouldn’t want you to be terrified. I appreciate your transparency, keep doing you Lily!
All the above said with positivity. Great job Lily.

It's not so much that I find your profession confusing, it's more the case that influencers project shadiness in all that they do when speaking to us. However, I just want to say it's NEVER anyones business to know what people earn, neither should you feel pressured to disclose that. I also commend you on being clear with us in this video, you're clearly a person with integrity. Thanks.

Lily this video is actually amazing. So informative and I think it's good that you are being transparent. I'm only a small content creator but I've been blogging for years and worked on the flipside of it all in PR, I always think back to why I started it and it's all about passion which is exactly why I haven't gone full time because I would have to accept sponsorships and talk about brands that just wouldn't sit well with me to make a comfortable enough living. It's so easy to see through content creators that work with brands for the wrong reasons, I have luckily never doubted any of the people I watch (you included) xx

  • @emilywilson9875
    @emilywilson9875 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The reason brands don’t like Influencers disclosing when something was gifted is not mainly due to the brand being inundated with requests, it’s more because the ‘view’ or ‘engagement’ generated off the back of the influencer’s content is more valuable if it seems there is no existing commercial relationship between the brand and influencer. If the brand has no influence on the content then there is no need to disclose as an ad, but due to the unique relationship influencers have with their audience (vs other advertising platforms) I think it shows respect for their audience when they do.

I'm the type of consumer that usually will research A LOT before buying something that an influencer is recommending. So I never use their link but I buy something because of them... Lovely video, Lily, thank you so much! And I totally agree with the shotgun of IG or YT content at the same time, about the same product. I really dislike them and I had no idea that you guys didn't know that there were a lot of influencers doing the same campaign.

I waited for this video for so long and I can honestly say it was worth it. I am not one to always comment or react to a picture or a video of anyone I watch or follow, but this time I feel like I need to let you in on my thoughts. I studied journalism and advertising and I was upset on how little they knew and talked on social media and blogs. It is a very important part of our lives now and I feel like videos like this one should be used as an example of how to let people in on the "secret" (which I know is scary for brands as some of them feel it would ruin their ads). Overall I liked all the points you made and explanations you gave and I need you to know you are a champion for doing that! I hope this video goes down well because honestly, you deserve every bit of applause for that! Congrats, Lily

I love how transparent you are with you viewers. You are always so authentic regardless of the impact it may have with brands or your audience. There are so many creators on TH-cam/insta that seem to be constantly away or buying so many products/clothes/bags and don’t actually say it’s PR or free. I find these are the ones that caused the whole “influencer” thing which worries me because often their viewers are younger and easily influenced because it’s often clear they wouldn’t normally use or buy what they are advertising which gives other honest youtubers a bad rep

Lily, this was GREAT. I always think of YT as an alternative to buying many magazines in previous decades... I use it for the same purpose, to get recommendations for products from women similar to me, or to see beautiful images, or to dream about products and experiences that will never be within reach for me. I always hold YT creators to the standards I’d expect of women’s magazine writers/editors. After watching this I think you’re (content creators) actually much more objective than the magazine writers of old. I love YT even more now, even if I am a couple of years too old to be a millennial!

This is one of the reasons I watch your channel on a regular basis, because you are always open about what you choose to feature. (I sometimes even open videos I am not interested in particularly just so I can ~help with the views, lol).
This is really interesting and I think that if more people knew these things it would be much less 'hate' about sponsorships and such. But maybe is the part of me that studied something related to economy and stuff like that understands these situations more. IDK.
As I said, I loved the video and I think it shows that you are honest about what you talk about and the products or brands you choose to work with.

This was so great, I think the less taboo as subject is the more acceptance there will be! I grew up reading fashion magazines not even thinking about how half of the content were advertisements, because I loved the photography and art direction so much. Content creators get so much hate when the biggest part of the problem is that people are not aware of how much money brands spend on marketing and publicity.
I love knowing more about the subject and I honestly wouldn't have gotten into makeup, crafts or so many other things, or even know where to start or what to buy if it weren't for youtubers I follow.
Thank you for always being so honest Lily :)

Hi Lily. I found you because of a tweet by Lydia Elise Millen. I am sooo glad that I did. I’ve been curious about this process, and never realized how complicated it was, nor did I know the many facets of it. Since this is my first time at your channel, I am assuming you must be great at what you do because you have nearly 500K loyal subscribers. But in the short time that I’ve watched (only 17 min through a 40 min vlog), I can tell that you are a great analyst. You are methodical in how you take an audience through a subject matter, your explanations are concise and simple, and you are thorough in your coverage of the subject matter. Just wanted to drop you a line and acknowledge the hard work that must have gone into the making of this video for us, including all the prep you had to do to organize it in the way you did. Thanks for now...gotta go and watch the rest of your video. .... P.S. apparently I cannot follow a simple direction that was provided at the beginning of this video which was “to watch the video all the way to the end before commenting”. Oops 😬😊

Love your content lily! I think it says a lot about your skill and competency to be able to make a video that’s clear and honest like this. You say at one point that one of the reasons you don’t work with brands you don’t like (other than obvs integrity) is that you’re bad at lying. And it just made me think, I think one of the reasons I really like your content and always feel 100% trusting of what you put out regardless of whether it’s an ad, is that you’re so authentic and I have always registered (even if I haven’t articulated it to myself before seeing this video) that you wouldn’t want to say something you didn’t mean because you’re always so upfront about everything you do and feel regarding your content. It just goes to show that you trusting your gut and being ‘picky’ (as you call it) from day one was the right decision. I find it quite inspirational tbh in terms of thinking about how to approach my own career choices. Anyway sorry rant over. Loved this video! 💕

This is a fantastic video, all these things so many people avoid touching on and it’s so frustrating as it’s not being nosey, it’s trying to understand a relatively new career path works. For example, we can all look up how models are managed with agents or how a general office job may work but this is such an elusive subject and we don’t get a chance to fully understand it. Viewers and consumers of products alike appreciate transparency, and that honesty adds value and a level of trustworthy-ness to an individual or brand. Good stuff Lily! Xx

    Hi Lily,
I don't comment on videos often but after watching this one I feel like I need to tell you what I thought of it. I've been subscribed to your channel since Rich proposed to you so by now I kind of know the way you approach things and the amount of thought you put into everything. So I was surprised when you said on Instagram that you were nervous about this video. I mean I do get it because people on the internet can be really nasty but I think in most cases that's just because they're jealous.
When I saw that you were gonna upload a video on this topic I immediately knew it was gonna be very well thought through and honest and you really didn't disappoint me at all. I think it's rare to see creators who produce such informative and relevant content. And even when it's a bit of a controversial topic like in this case you never fail to nail it in terms of leaving your audience with that nice feeling of satisfaction after watching.
I learned so much from watching this video and just found it so interesting. I loved how honest you were as well. Also it's incredible how you sit in front of a camera talking to it for almost an hour and still manage to capture my attention throughout the whole thing. So to out all of that in just a few words: Thanks for the great content you always make for us!
I hope you didn't give up reading this after two sentences because that's probably the longest comment I've ever written on something but I really felt like you needed to hear/read this. Also I apologize for any grammar mistakes or anything like that because I'm from Austria so English isn't my native language.
    xx Hannah

Just wanted to say “good on you” for confidently saying “I know my worth” 👏🏻. I think, particularly as women, we’re taught to just be nice, subservient and grateful for any scrap that’s thrown our way. At the end of the day you’re a business, not a charity, and you should be properly compensated for the work you do. Never be ashamed of standing up for yourself - it’s not conceited or arrogant, it demonstrates self-confidence and pride in what you do.

As a smaller creator (only 16k subs) I have started recently getting approached by brands in the last 12 months or so (mainly because my views are much better than my sub count) I found this video mega helpful Lily because I struggle to establish my worth! Some brands will ask me what they feel time time is worth (along with with my analytics and stats across my social media) This works well for the most part especially in terms of sponsored content (which I hardly do...maybe 2-3 in a year as like you im super picky) But I really struggle to define my worth as a creator generally. Don’t get me wrong I don’t worry about it too much because TH-cam is more of a hobby for me and the occasional brand collab is more of a learning experience ☺️ but I do get sent a lot from PRs which I really appreciate as it enables me to try and share more... but it’s never an obligation situation, I am also super conscious about coming across blasé about it as I know I’m lucky to get products sent and I would hate to come across as “braggy”... I find his whole area a really grey but this video has really helped me and I’m sure will help a ton of others...both viewers and creators alike! Sorry for such a rambly message Lily and thanks again 💓

    Edit after finishing the video::
I think what you said at the start about trusting the people you are watching is the foundation and most fundamental part of this experience and the transparency and honesty that you have showed with us day in and day out from day one is something I genuinely appreciate and it’s just a positive feedback loop because it encourages more trust in your content etc. and this video may just be one of the most transparent any creator could be and you’ve approached the topic very objectively and frankly like you are not making this to bash the system and again it makes me immensely respect youu!

Loved this video so much! You put the message across so well, fluently and honestly. Gave me a better insight into the world of marketing and PR in this industry. Really respect you for doing this. I never judged or assumed things about advertising in any way as I am normally happy for my favourite influencers to get jobs as they provide me with free content all year round and I get to learn about new brands and products I wouldn't see otherwise as I NEVER listen to traditional marketing/celebrities as it doesn't feel real, I much prefer listening to influencers I trust. I also don't buy makeup or skin care through links, I always go into stores and look at the product and pick it up there xxx

And content creators like yourself, who are blunt, honest and straightforward, represent your work really well and deserve all the success. 👏🏼

Well done Lily! Amazing job, watched the whole 40 mins and it was super informative. Thank you so much for doing it and opening up the conversation. I hope other bloggers follow your example and speak about how they work with brands. Anyway, love your content and will definitely keep watching xxx

i really aprepreciated this video, the only thing is, i dont't think we can always say as a viewer who is completely honest and who not, you can trust the person because you might like them, but because we don't get to see the behind the scenes you can't always tell what's real and what not. Having said that i have a whole world of appreciation for you now because i understand it's much more complicated than it appears from the outside and i loved your honesty

I only wish that you did not have to be scared to put a video up, but that is the reality we live in. There are no longer safe places to have open, honest feedback without the fear of reprisal. I found this video extremely informative, and you covered the topics in a logical order. Thank you for doing what you do. I can always trust that you will stay true to yourself for the respect of your audience.

You can tell you worked so hard to get this video right and it shows how invested you are, as well as being incredibly honest with your viewers. I think as viewers we are as invested in your channel as we love watching your content - so thank you for being so open. 😘👌🏼💕

Great video Lily! When I first started out on TH-cam and had brands contacting me I had no clue at all how things worked. I just had to figure it out for myself along the way! This video will be so helpful for new content creators and also to educate viewers on what sponsorships are. Well done!!

I’m only 10 minutes in and wanted to comment on how much I loved this video and your honesty. I’m sure there will be people who will be negative but I think you always come across as transparent and I think 99% of your viewers will agree.
I am a long time follower/watcher and have always felt bad that you feel you have to constantly explain yourself to people when you are just doing your job but It made me think that many professions are the same. I’m a teacher and constantly have to justify my ‘9-3’ hours and 15 weeks off a year when in reality my job is tough in its own right and I shouldn’t have to justify it to anyone.
Great video, I’d love to see more Q&A type videos on a variety of topics as I love listening to you points of view and probably why I love your podcasts so much. Xx

Jessica Brosnan I totally agree. I’ve searched about this before and nothing beneficial comes up. It’s like the clouds are opening because before it got so complicated especially with new TH-camrs like myself. I feel like I can learn from this and grow. Lily is so honest and such a girl boss! She’s fantastic.... literally will have this video on repeat to live and learn xxx

Very interesting Lily and answered a lot of questions I'd been wondering about...I agree with you on so much of that...Personally I hate ads in the middle of videos. I really do!! I also get a hunch when a content creator doesn't love a product or brand and is just flogging it...it puts me right off them 😤 I know you are not like that and I value your integrity! Trust is really important and I can honestly say I trust you. Thanks for this video🖒

You are one of the first youtubers I followed and I will continue to do so, not only because I enjoy all of your content, but because you are so incredibly professional! I know we only see snipets of you online and we have no idea on the behind the scenes Lily, but what we are shown is always consistent, therefore honest. You explained that all really well, and if I did ever had a doubt about an ad video, I feel a lot more equipped to make my own educated decision on it now. It took a lot of courage to upload this video, not because anything wrong could come of it, but it is daunting for ANYONE to describe their job, and put out there what their 'worth' is professionally. Thank you so muh for this video, and all others. You are without a doubt one if the most intelligently charming youtuber I know. A lot of my make up inspiration comes from you, and it isn't just because of ads and "suggesting" brands but it is because of your creativity (for example with renovating) and your style (with make up and clothes). So, thank you.

I am really glad you took the time to create this video, it is informative. Its made me appreciate and if anything, have more confidence in the people I watch on youtube, for most part they keep or strive to have the transparency you maintain. Sadly, when TH-camrs haven't been so diligent or considerate of their audience and what is right for them, it's put me off, but like you said, I just take my views elsewhere and leave them to it. I for sure don't need to skip any #ad videos from yourself 🙂 also, loving the house renovation content, we moved into our place over 18months ago and progress has ceased, but feeling inspired again to make it more our home.

Lily, thank you so much for this. I would expect nothing less from you, someone I really respect, but this sort of transparency is exactly what this industry needs. I'm 24 and really feel I've "grown up" with TH-cam, and I've always been so curious about how this all works. I'm not someone who's ever thought negatively of youtubers or bloggers and as I have a personal interest in marketing and PR this is just so so useful, insightful and yeah go you Lily. Thank you for all the work you've put in to this! Lots of love x

Well done, Lily!! I've been waiting on this video for a while and I thought it was incredibly well thought out and intelligently done. I really enjoyed it. Personally, I learnt a lot but nothing shocked me because I pretty much thought things worked out the way you've said they do. I've never really had issues with thinking the content creators I follow are fake(maybe I'm naive but I just think I've chosen carefully and well). Even if I do unfollow, it's never been because of ads but more because I don't enjoy their content anymore and/or I don't have the time to invest in content I enjoy too little. Anyway, thank you for putting so much work and thought into this video. I think it's amazing.❤️❤️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
