I talked about firewood with my dad this morning and he loved poplar wood. It filled in real nice at the beginning and end of winters (Canadian winters) and he kept the hardest woods for the coldest part of winter and for the nights. It was a real good decision since we didn't have loads of money to have just the hard wood. And I can't say we had anything to complain about... Except the cold house in the morning that anyone with a wood stove know about 😆

I burn a lot of Aspen because it's plentiful here, smells great, is easy on chains, splits easy, is lightweight and burns hot.
I'm just happy that I don't write checks for propane or natural gas 😊

Poplar wood is GREAT kindling wood. Awesome way to “start” the fire and then use other wood to sustain it! SMART MOVE!!! Hugs to your wife!!!

I have a friend who doesn't care what kind of wood she gets as long as it's free. Where I live there is arborvitae lining the property. When one falls over I cut it up and give it to her. Unlike you I have many tools. Ryobi for facility maintenance and EGO for yard tools. I use them for side jobs and to help those who need it. I admire your ability to work online to produce income.
For me there are always weeds that grow and grass to mow. Holes to patch and paint to match. I get satisfaction from a job well done and knowing that people are happy with the job that has been done. I appreciate that you are debt free and trying to save on expenses. I am working on eradicating the four letter word debt from my life. Keep up the good work. Have an excellent day.

Free wood is much better than being cold, regardless of what kind it is

I use poplar to start a good quick fire, and when I'm around the stove during the day. I mostly burn white oak, especially in the evening, but I take poplar too on purpose for the reasons stated above.

I've been burning poplar for years and they're great so long as they are dried. So no it's not a waste of time.

Burn the Poplar during the warmer days and during the awakening times. Use oak/maple/birch at night to pack the stove for overnight. I burn dried pine during the day especially to heat the cabin quickly. Burns fast and a lot of heat. Fill it with hard wood for overnight.

Should forget about building the 5000 dollar shed. You and your wife are clearly doing great without it and happy. Why complicate things by spending more. If it's not broke don't fix.
