"Intelligence doesn't make you less prone to bad ideas. It just makes you better at defending them." One of THE best things i've ever heard.
Yeah. I'd just add.. the formation of belief can be an emotional thing, but it doesn't have to be. I mean, it's practically impossible for emotions not to influence your beliefs on various occasions, but it certainly possible to develop a process of belief formation that protects against it.
Part of the system I've developed is to treat most all knowledge I have as possibilities rather than concrete conclusions. I stands by ready to change them as soon as needed, and I NEVER associate my beliefs with my identity. I am not my beliefs. My beliefs are just representative of how much I think I know at the moment, and I might not always be comfortable with them either.

Honestly this idea changed my world view a little. I was always like how can really smart people be on the wrong side of history? And honestly this makes so much sense
"Do you have any idea how much damage you can do if you’re a police officer who wants to hurt people? How much the system will protect you?"
Damn.
yeah, that shit hits different in the wake of the George Floyd protests, but it was always a sentiment that resonated pretty deep.

The one thing I have always found fascinating about The Corruption is how it feeds on toxic relationships. You have Jane Prentiss in Hive, the story of the guy with his "little beetle", this one. The way that preying on peoples need for love and affection can be diseased and corrupted and that is just as debilitating as a physical sickness.... I really appreciate that touch.
Corruption stories are always some of my favourites.
Damn good point.... Makes me wonder if this is a result in people's fear of sexuality leading to becoming 'soiled/corrupted' like hardcore religions. Or more recently, becoming 'soiled/corrupted' from a STD.

He is amazing and I love him and I want his lil bloodlustful heart to do SO well. But I also want him to lose lol. He's a Hunter, he can't stop himself.

Johnny boi is the only writer
it reminds me of dnd and the difference between intelligence and wisdom.
and the one from Fairchild about how this hypothetical apocalypse seems important to Martin unlike others because he's living during this one
Sounds like anti-intellectualism to me. The use of the word "just" implies that intelligence doesn't do anything _but_ make you better at lying to people. Which it can help with, I'm not saying it doesn't, but the benefits of higher intelligence outweigh such downsides.
You can be both intelligent, _and_ open-minded as well. Not all intelligent people defend their bad ideas once challenged. Intelligence is simply a power that can be used beneficially, or abused.
The quote honestly sounds like it came from a dumb person trying to insult someone smarter than them because they were jealous.

Cults are so creepy. Toxic relationships much. The institute is also kind of a cult. I love Jon and Daisys friendship so much. And how Jon wants to see Daisy and the hunt separatly. Because it would mean something really bad for her and himself, if the hunt is a part of her and the eye is a part of him and it's them doing this awful things.
Daisy went from a character I hated because of how she used her job as an excuse to hurt people to a character I really love. She holds herself accountable understanding that The Hunt influenced her a lot and without it she would probably not have hurt people, she understands the things she did wrong and is working to be better - and the "Do you have any idea how much damage you can do if you’re a police officer who wants to hurt people? How much the system will protect you?" line which is great.
She's honestly the most rational character right now, when everybody is mad at Jon for the stupidest shit, she's the one who generally defends him and points out the truth, like fuck yeah Daisy go
She's a really good character and I also definitely didn't like her the first time I met her, but ended up really loving her and her friendship with Jon
@user-tf8xr8wc9u youre right, although I do think that she was someone with a penchant for violence, and she knows that, and that's why she was chosen by the hunt, but the hunt still made her violent desires stronger in a way that made it harder or impossible to resist where she might not have acted so aggressively if she hadn't been influenced by it? Like she knows and regrets that there's a part of her that was violent, but still, the hunt made that part much stronger, and while she might not have gone so far if she hadn't been selected by the hunt, she still holds herself accountable that she did bad things under its influence, and that she also was not a very good person even without the hunt

the hunters finishing each other's sentences is concerning. they weren't doing that last time....
They seem to have lost a little more of their humanity but at least they seem closer like Breakon and Hope.
They may be turning into monsters but at least they're found family.
crazy how hunters don't see themselves as monsters
Not really, as the Nietzsche quote goes, Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.
@@Sxcheschka oh no they're monsters, the hunt actually keeps the hunting
You keep Gerry in this state against his will for years, but yeah, sure, Jon is the monster here.
I'm so sick of people in this podcast having such wild double standards.
- Daisy is different. she killed people, which is much better than giving them nightmares
- you are a monster, but Helen isn't
- you've been kidnapped 3 times in the last week? well, you don't know how bad it's been for ME! I am being held here against my will! do you know how much it sucks?
- when were you going to tell us you eat people's trauma?! if I had a horrible secret, say, like, getting intel from the enemy and acting on it without any proof, I would totally tell you
And, of course, my favourite:
- can't Jon not charge into danger to try and save the world as I'm trying to sacrifice myself for his well-being?
crazy and maddening but so realistic!
That's what I love about this series, the people feel real and it's a lot harder to end up liking them all because of it. Aiming to please is just lying to yourself. Getting upset at characters for acting how they do is even better because that just adds to the realism. And at the same time, they have a point, and our protagonists have a point. They all are right and wrong at the same time. It's very brilliant writing styles.
Well said.
Except, beung bothered by that is a bit of a double standard in and of itself. They're ALL traumatized and acting on that trauma. It's just harder to empathize with the rest of the crew because they're not the functional POV.
@@Sxcheschka bai
I remember when I used admire Trevor and Julia, but the fact they used Gerry when Gerry never wanted to be used as a monster book is horrible.
GO DAISY!
Yeah, especially since Gerry mentioned how much it hurts to be a ghost. They held him prisoner for year, treating him like a book instead of a person, while he was in so much pain and they didn't care.
@@_spilled_milk_pro-champion3871 And on top of that, they got angry because one person did the decent thing and set him free. Like, how awful can you be? But I think Trevor is turning into something inhuman, and Julia with him. Why else would he be suddenly and magically free of cancer or any disease at all?
The corruption really has themes of love and belonging
Or fear from the lack thereof. "Love bombing" is a great example of the corruption.
Ok this one got to me. I was raised in a cult, so hearing this description of them is... Reminiscent of some of the things I went through, even if it wasn't to that scale. Still, I can't stand meditating, even if it would help me just cause it reminds me of that cult. Also, interesting to hear a religion angle that wasn't The Dark, they usually handed the cult stuff it seems.
The Dark seems to have the motif of an inverse Abrahamic faith; darkness where there was light, terror instead of hope, brackish sludge instead of holy water, et cetera. Similar to how Filth is frequently about love, or The Stranger adopts the circus as an aesthetic.
Did she growl? Like, ligit growl at the vampire killer? Wow...
It was kinda hot- what? huh! who said that?
See?! Daisy gets ittt everyone just wants to help everyone get through whatever crappy entity they were a part of and everyone is doing their best to stop themselves from hurting innocent people
daisyyyy ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡ she protect, she growl, i lvoe her
This episode strikes me the most because of the word AGAPE. I'm a closeted atheist studying at a Catholic School and we had Agape feasts every year. And we usually were told to say things that we love about each other, or God or the school. It's kinda nice, actually. I realized that religions and cults don't have much of the difference. The scale is just different, and in religion, since more people believe it, it becomes more valid. But both religion and cults has the sense of belonging that moves people together.
That's really interesting to think about! I hope you'll be able to be yourself freely in the future!
I heard somewhere that religions are just successful cults. It's depressing how much affect they've had on humanity, but also fascinating. I hope you are ok.
This isn't meant to offend anyone but this reminded me of a quote I read somewhere online.
In a cult, there's a person at the top who knows it's all bull.
In a religion, that person's been dead for hundreds of years.
Not my quote. But I just thought it was somewhat relevant.
(this is coming from a lifelong atheist, whos parents are atheist as well, so correct me with im wrong here) but to me the only real difference between a religion and a cult is how much dammage it *requires* its members to do, both to others and to themselves. like there are some people who arent devout christians and will mostly just like say grace before dinner and whatnot, and that's most of the Christians i know. but with something like Scientology, there's no being like... casually a Scientologist, it's kinda all-or-nothing. those are just my feelings on the matter.
@@3dcypher543 that is a REALLY good quote that imma be using all the time now, thank you!
i just started to think that basira is sorta acting like past daisy. Strong, protective, but very very dangerous... current basira has the same vibe as hunting daisy-
I’ve realized what a hub for activity the Magnus institute is. Obviously you’ve got the eye, the web is watching from somewhere, Helen, Peter, Simon was there for a bit, Daisy was part of the hunt, the coffin was there for a bit as well, and that one time the flesh attempted an attack!
Daisy's just a loyal puppy dog ;n;
Basira and Melanie (and possibly Martin) are more or less abandoning Jon but Daisy's affection is unconditional :')
Every episode I listen to makes Daisy a little more my favourite (well she's still competing with Martin but I love 'em both). Back in season 1 I was like: I don't care if she's a little hot, she's a bad person plus acab but now this is my daughter I will fight to protect her.
"listen to the quiet" is perhaps the most underestimated quote from this episode... especially in the times we live in.
I'm scared for Daisy home girl full on growled and like I wanted to point out that Juilia and old man duo have been very right on calling out people's monstrous bits of em, so I am worried that Daisy might turn into like a beast or a embodiment of the hunt
My theory is that shes gonna break and go full hunt and in her blood blinded mind she will be at risk of actually completing the hunts ritual. Not being conscious enough to think of the end of the chase an continuing it forever
DAISY PROTECTION SQUAD RISE UP
This is a plea to Jonathan Sims. Do not kill Daisy please

Arkansas! Wow. They did their homework well. Arkansas is the perfect place for this to happen in. (Citizen of Arkansas and Religious Studies scholar who specialized in religious extremism, specifically the terrorist groups that began here.)
I know, I thought the same! I lived there for four years and it truly is the perfect place for an unsettling level of devotion. Most of the Bible Belt is, but... something about just how rural certain areas are, perhaps? I wouldn’t know. I’m going to have to do some research on the state’s past extremism! That’ll be... well, probably unnerving, but interesting. Thanks for the idea on how to spend my afternoon!
@@feathersoffancy8988 I recommend starting with the Covenant Sword and Arm of God Siege, our now governor Asa Hutchinson was attorney general at the time. His would be assassin was a mentor of the Oklahoma City Bomber and the date of that bombing coincides with the arrest date. It was also used as a model for ATF involvement with the Branch Davidians. However in the CSA siege the government actually listened to experts like me and they were able to stand down despite the CSA being far better armed and actively trained.
Then you have both branches of the KKK, (KKK Inc vs KKK ltd) headquartered here as well as the Christian Identity Movement.
They're the biggest players but there is also the meth rings, human trafficking, and whatnot that intersect with this.
If you want any recommends or anything let me know. I would be happy to help!
IrishMorgenstern woah, thank you so much!! This sounds incredibly interesting! I can’t believe there is all of this history that I simply wasn’t aware of at all. I can’t wait to learn!
IrishMorgenstern hey, I just wanted to say thank you again. I spent about five hours researching cults (especially what has spawned from the Christian Identity movement) and it was very enlightening. I was raised in an incredibly conservative and Christian environment and while I’ve broken away from much of the dogma, it was enlightening to see how close these extremely harmful doctrines were to ones that I heard and parroted for a while. I really enjoyed the experience and thought you should know!!

Same!! It was really cool to hear my old homestate mentioned, but also a little too... close to home, if you’ll excuse the pun😅 my past denomination of religion was close to cult-y itself, so it really felt... real
I really feel this poor woman's vulnerability, and the fear of putting off "your life". Amazing.
God this speaks to me so much. I've worked in the film industry for a couple of years, and the vibe is always: 'follow your dreams, if you work hard enough, you'll make it!' But the truth is, the vast, vast majority of people, even the ones with legit talent who work their asses off, still never make it. So I quit and went back to school at 29 to become an engineer. I'm 31 now. 2 Years to go to complete my studies, and I've already landed a pretty nice job. It's not as exciting as the film industry, but the pay is good and the benefits are great. The scenario of waking up at 41 realising it's never going to happen was my nightmare. So yeah, in a way, I gave up on my dreams, but sometimes accepting mediocrity is a lot better than trying to claw your way out of an endless pit. I own a house and I get 5 weeks paid leave, and I'm still young enough to climb the ladder, even though I've lost my sense of ambition quite a bit. Better than joining a cult though.
I love Brandon Sanderson's lesson about this. I can't remember which video it was (it was over Skype for some writing program?) but he basically said "You can't do it; the whole 'things will work out if you follow your dreams and work hard' is a lie, but that doesn't mean it's worthless."
Hey, it's two years later ! Congratulations, I hope you're content ^_^

Something interesting is how the fears can connect to each other. After leaving the cult I'm sure loneliness still got the statement giver in the end so they left one fear and went right into another
Daisy has fast become one of my favorite characters
Coming back to this I really enjoy how they have a legitimate reason for coming after Jon. They dont know Gerry as a person, only as a resource and this guy, whom you've gone out of your way to help freaking takes it. I'd be pissed too 😂
???? They didn't come for the page, they came as an excuse to hunt. Even if he still had the lage, they were gonna kill him, clearly. The page was just an excuse to make the trip to him. They're clearly completely corrupted and united with the hunt atp and they tried to use John being "not human enough" to kill him without question. Either way, they only helped him in the first place because he just happened to be getting hunted by their target

Oh I love the intro
People really do have a hubris when it comes to cults
Cults are in the core emotional and comforting
Its the closest to the web, it is genuinely loving, it feels like a warm hug from your family. Because they become your family, they truly do love you and you love them
Of course it was always a trap. The weaver makes the system of love and entrapment. The feelings are real. There is no lie in that and thats why its so hard to escape
Love and faith makes you do horrible things and you are ignorant to all of it because YOU yourself justified it

A minor quibble, perhaps, but does anyone find it unlikely that the U.S. government would ever be investigating a religious organization for tax fraud? Not saying it’s impossible (especially if it was also functioning as a corporate entity with its rice wine production), but in my experience, law enforcement in the states is severely allergic to looking too closely at the finances of religious groups, even some of the cultier ones.
Tax fraud is the easiest way to get people who're actually committing more serious crimes you can't get evidence for. It is famously how they convicted Al Capone for anything.
