I'm like 6 or so episodes in but I keep getting these animatics and honestly only a minute and a half into this video I'm sensing mad romantic tension going on here. I dont know shit about these guys except that they both work at the archives (I think Martin works there?) and Johnathan is supposed to be the guy trying miserably to organize a wrecked system of files. I got to stop watching these spoilers but man the chemistry with these characters is just too good

Putting aside the Gay, Jon and Martin are all that's left of the s1 crew. Elias is alive but absent. Jon lost Sasha, swore he wouldn't lose anyone else, and then lost Tim. After waking up from that and struggling with his change, he's been hated by his new assistants and largely ignored by Martin, the one person who's been his constant the last few years. At this point, regardless of Jon's feelings about Martin, that man is all he has left and he is desperately clinging to the last remnants of his human life.
When you put it like that it makes sense why the two got together.
That on top of the fact that Elias picks people for the institute who wouldn't be noticed if they went missing, so neither of them really have any meaningful relationships outside of the institute. They're both literally all the other has.
Not to mention Martin is in the same boat. We saw him get along with Melanie and the rest of the new crew but after his mother’s death he felt like he had nobody. When Jon came back he had a purpose, a reason to live again. Make sure Jon is safe, no matter the cost to himself (or others is implied by Martins actions in S5 but not specifically in S4). Martin //does// technically have people like Basira (god I hope I’m spelling her name right) and you could make an argument he also has Melanie, sure she’s a bit prickly right now but she’s only downright homicidal to Jon and we’ve seen them get along just fine.
The way Jon hesitated after Martin refused was... interesting to me.
Because Martin's right. Jon doesn't want to blind himself. He doesn't want to die. He wants to live, no matter how difficult it may be.
But that's also why Martin's wrong. Because he also wants MARTIN to live, but he wants MARTIN to live a life that's happy and safe and free of pain. I legitimately believe that if Martin had given the word, Jon would've done it without hesitation. Hell, he probably would have found some way to do it painlessly (for The One He Loves, not for himself). That realization was the one that made him pause to look for words. Not that Martin was right, but that he didn't know how much he means to Jon.

YEah. As fucked up as the situation is that line is always funny to me, like in the original episode. And the animation makes it better.
I love how Martin talks to the tape recorders/audience. He’s a mess at human interaction but takes all this weirdness in stride.

Wow. This really helped me visualize this scene better bc it is really hard for me to visualize the scenes just in audio format. But seeing it how you animated it made me pick up more on the tone that I hadn't even noticed before. and I live the way you draw them and the effort put into the art is obvious and consistent. it looked like every frame was important and well done. this is great!!! thanks for the amazing content!

God this hits DIFFERENT after the finale. Imagine if Jon had just gauged out his eyes that same day, or Martin had agreed... If Jonny had gone with the web!Martin plan, this would totally have been evidence. In 154, he chose maybe saving the world over them being together and escaping it all; in 200... (Sobbing sounds)
