The saddest part of this movie, is nearly all of it is made up, even the end credit bio. Most of the timeline the movie takes place he was actually in prison in NY. He definitely didn't cash 4M$ in checks - it was less than 4K$, he didn't escape out of a toilet from the fbi, he wasn't a doctor, he didn't pass the bar exam, he didn't work for the FBI or even national banks. He may have traveled on a plane disguised as a pilot a time or two, but in all likelihood didn't - he simply told people he was a pilot to defraud them. He's a complete fraud and wasn't a bright criminal either - arrested multiple times in multiple states. Doesn't make the movie any less entertaining though.

0:58 - This was an actual game show. It was called "To Tell the Truth". Basically 3 people come on the show claiming to be a person. The celebrity guests can ask them questions, then pick the person who they think is the actual person. At the end of the show, the host asks "Will the real Frank Abignale please stand up." This is when the actual person stands and reveals themself.

In case you're wondering about the opening scene, they used footage from an American panel show from the 1970s, "To Tell the Truth", in which the real Frank Abignale Jr. was the subject. On the show, there are three people on stage who all claim to be the same person. A short statement written by the person is read, and a panel of four celebrities question the challengers in order to determine who the real one is. After they vote on who they think it is, the host asks "Will the real (name of person) please stand up?", after which they do. The actual episode in which he appeared originally aired in 1977, obviously after he was supposedly arrested.

This movie REALLY romanticizes Frank. In reality, he was a small-time con man who primarily preyed on small families and individuals. He really financially and emotionally hurt quite a few poor, innocent people. He also flat-out lied about most of his exploits such as flying all the time and practicing medicine and law. That scene where he recruits flight attendants from a school? He conducted "physical examinations" aka assault on those girls as part of his "interview" process. If you read up about his life, he actually was an unremarkable petty criminal who bluffed his way into legend later in life.
    Such an incredible movie, though!

I've read the book, which Abagnale wrote and much of it has largely been discredited as made up. This exaggeration is further exaggerated and glamorized in the movie. But still, Abagnale wrote it well and I enjoyed it much as I enjoyed the movie, which is Spielberg and of course excellent. Love the reaction, great movie choices lately.

The fascinating thing about movies like this one is that ordinary people can't think like Frank Abignale. He could think very fast on his feet, and he has said in presentations that he made up everything he did on the spur of the moment. I, too, can't believe his confidence.

Well....I hope your butt didn't hurt after this one. ( Awkwardly looking off to the side 😕) Glad you enjoyed the movie. It's probably very "Hollywoodized" but a good one. The REAL true story is probably even more fascinating but it probably couldn't be condensed into a movie.

Check out The Terminal with Tom Hanks. As much as I love this movie I think The Terminal is better. Movie is about a foreigner forced to live in JFK airport in New York because his countries government is taken over by a military coup which makes his VISA get cancelled.

My mum met the real Frank Abignale at a conference on banking. She basically said he told them the story from the movie of what really happened. It was a long time ago but she said that what he told her was similar to the movie.
