One thing I ask myself is, if my house were to burn down, what would I miss having? Or, if I had 5 minutes to gather up what's important to me, what would it be? It can be very enlightening. Love y'alls spirits and how you help everyone.
Having to pack / unpack for EIGHT semesters for college I learned to minimize my things. I’m Sooo glad I learned about minimizing early in my life. I don’t need what I thought I needed!
I thought I was a minimalist until I moved 😆 we had so much junk!! I was just really good at organizing. A month later and I’m still sorting things out.
It's when you move, you then discover all the rubbish and stuff that you still have and has accumilated and when you get the removal bill well......i have found this myself but there is no chance of it happening now, the money that i have probably wasted and so many have moved house still with the junk and only dispose of some of it AFTER they have moved, i seen this myself when helping people sort out after moving, often not bieng present before the move, i only wished i had come across these videos in the past, that would have kept the expenditure down tenfold, oh well one lives and learns!
Same! We moved in June; when the van was loaded with our furniture, I happily thought "hey, look at how little it actually is" but then the boxes and boxes of stuff were loaded. I feel like such a fraud, proclaiming I was a minimalist for 2 years. 😅 Ah well, it's a process!
I am currently trying to pair everything down to fit in the back of my 8ft truck bed and it's kinda iffy. I am trying to get everything down. Most of what I own are tools and I am having to make some tough choices.
It is amazing how we accumulate STUFF over time!! It takes moving for us to comprehend how much STUFF we have. Move or not to move is the real question.
Great advice on moving for a collage student. I wish I had minimalist advice when I move from home to attend school in another state. I asked my Mom to save some of my items in boxes and I would return for them at the end of a semester. .she did not save those items...she simply trashed them. I was shocked and angry. The Minimalists are right...scan photos, memory items or take everything that you want when you move out.
I love these bite-size video's. (Love all your videos) Thank you for all that you do to help everyone. I'm looking forward to your new documentary, I'm sure I'll watch that one over two dozen times too.
For those who need it at this time in their lives....a Packing party, what a great idea !! Now that I am a Minimalist I can recall the "sinking sensation" of looking at a house full of "stuff" and recognizing that I had been "playing a game of chess with my possessions for many years and was exhausted by it all". Moving one piece on the board, here and there, back and forth, time after time again. Now I have minimal objects, use each and every one of them frequently and do not feel overwhelmed any longer. It is a much better existence.
For me it's the other way round. I discovered them first and then the others. In fact I just came to know the video that got me into minimalism featured Fumio Sasaki. 😀😀
This is happening to me now i didn't want to move out from this place that i cause not before i love it but because i knew that i have to do a huge declutering and i knew that i accumulated a lot of stuff and that was very stressing for me. Now im half of it but i still have a lot of stuff 😢😢
It seems like perspective would be needed before determining whether it is okay to leave things behind. I'm assuming she's moving to a dorm where space is limited. But when she moves to her first apartment after college, would she want the items in her first apartment? If not, then it's time to dispose of them. Also, how many scrapbooks are we talking about? A couple of boxes left at the parents' while someone is away at college seems reasonable. But if it's boxes and boxes of stuff that she will never look at again then maybe it's time to let them go.
That was so funny! “Why do you hate your parents so much? “ My sister left behind some stuff and I donate to the thrift store and threw out her old middle school gym shirt not sure why she was saving that. We are responsible to own up to all of our stuff and get rid of it when the time is right.
I'm busy packing our family for the 15th move in 14 years and everytime we move I get rid of more and more. I love it! Moving is so easy now, I can pack up our entire house in a day(family if 6).
Whoa! I am moving too to another pg. 😀 I have a question Joshua and Ryan - when do I call myself a minimalist? I have dfntly improved but is there something that defines me that I am a minimalist? 😬 I even practice sound minimalism. 😇
i think the definition usually lies in "living intentionally"; you may have more things (or less) than other people who describe themselves as a minimalist. Everyone's idea of minimalism can look vastly different!
@@jnorman20 I get it.... quantifying is totally up to us.... like say 50 items, 30 items......coz I own a few things now n think a lot while purchasing anything..... that is a definite change in me.....😀 Thanks much for your reply 🤗🤗
There are some dudes that live with just a phone, a small toiletries bag and that's basically it. I don't think "minimalist" really means anything, BUT I would say a HARDCORE Minimalist probably lives out of a backpack.
Ali apartmentgirl360 I know but for most youtubers, ads is the main source of income. I can put up with a few ads considering the time and efforts they committeed
@@zhangcathy8743 But they are not youtubers but writers and inspirational speakers. They don't want their main source of income to be from youtube as they have mentioned before. They just use the platform for people to access their content for free and benefit from minimalism. If you really want to support them for all the time and effort they put into making great content, why don't you purchase their maximal episodes or at least share their videos with others to spread the word? :)
30 Something Gal It’s just a suggestion for them. They do it out of their kindness and generosity and you take it for granted. That’s ignorant and selfish. And I didn’t ask you to tell me how to support them thanks : )

Laura Baas lol me too! I was preaching to my family while I had a truck load of junk lol

Many situations ❤.
I didn't know you guys have a TH-cam channel. I'm a huge fan of Matt's documentary.

Thanks, I will move next week I will start placing all the things that deeply know that I won't use or wear that could use someone else
I've learnt that removing the bigger items is the key to moving, old furniture etc. So I am removing a lot of things to big for my next move.
I'm busy packing our family for the 15th move in 14 years and everytime we move I get rid of more and more. I love it! Moving is so easy now, I can pack up our entire house in a day(family if 6).
I move a lot too and this was basically my goal, and it needs to fit in the smallest uhaul or else there is too much stuff.

Love to play in the background while I tidy lol

Adding a few advertisements won’t hurt your videos. You guys provide high quality programs .you deserve some pay back.
Josh and Ryan don’t believe in advertisement. You can support them through Patreon or purchasing their books or documentary instead.
I hate advertisements, especially in the middle of the video. So annoying

I mean, no parent cares about their kid storing their stuff in their house while they are at college…none of us.
5 boxes nothing else. :) just kidding
I thought your pithy answer would be “nothing” 😊
I want to be a happytalist more meaningful than a minimalist.❤🇨🇦❤🇨🇦
