Great video Stuart. As you say maybe not to everyone's liking but you enjoyed yourself and that's the main thing. And as a bonus I liked them too! 😁. I particularly liked the last image. I feel for your feet and ankles after spending a few hours navigating sea rocks. Great stuff. 👍
Thanks mate yeah looking at the views it’s interesting how folk seem to switch off if it’s not big grand vista stuff but each to their own lol - yeah last one was probs my fave too
First time I’ve come across your videos and so glad I did, albeit very late. I’ve only just come back to photography and was really struggling with what to concentrate on. Having the beautiful gower coast and 18 beaches on my doorstep is the ideal place to start doing this. I wasn’t interested in landscapes etc but this opens a whole new world, thank you very much 👍
Definitely is that time of year now where abstract photography starts to become main priority. Summer is a bummer for photos. Great video as always though 👍
I like these kinds of unique images much better than those big boring landscape images that everybody has. That place is a gold mine for intimate landscape images that nobody else has only you. The best thing about these kinds of photographs, you don't need to explain them like those cliche landscapes, seascapes.
Thanks I think all types/genres have their place though this type of photography (for me personally anyway) undoubtedly presents more challenges than perhaps the vista stuff where the shots are perhaps a bit more obvious. I try to be as rounded a photographer as possible as there’s always something you can take from different genres and approaches and apply them in other areas
Thoroughly enjoyed this, mate. Just about to head out in similar conditions, but determined to use my camera come what may, so this was a very handy inspiration with some good ideas to be stolen! Cheers 😊👍
Liked these images a lot Stuart. Your editing takes them to another level mate. I really enjoyed this vlog and wouldn't have minded if it had been 2 hours long.
Fantastic collections of abstract images Stuart, loved how the colours of the final image complimented each other. Really enjoyed this as it is a great example of using the conditions to the best advantage and the fact it is not always about sunrise or sunset that you can come away with some great images
Thanks very much yeah when you’ve got conditions like this it’s easy to sit and moan a bit but there’s always something to be had just requires a bit of thinking out of the box
Impressive haul of images under challenging conditions & you absolutely nailed it. The lines, patterns & colours are truly mesmerising. Kindest regards, Andrew
Thanks mate these shoots have been some of my favourites I’ve done lately, far more challenging etc than grand vista stuff (not that we don’t all like a bit of that)
I really enjoyed this video Stuart, as I did with the one you did on the Cumbria coast. I like the intimate shots, reminds me of the type of work done by David Ward. At one point I shouted at the video as I spotted a shot as you were panning the camera. Good to hear how much you enjoyed yourself, although I did have a wry smile knowing the football result at the end....I'm a bitter blue! Thanks for the video, hope to see more intimate coastal work in the future.
Thanks Steve yep David Ward is a master at this stuff, such a creative mind. Aye we’re in a world of pain at the moment lol another crap result today after super league embarrassment, season can’t finish quick enough!
Stuart great to watch this and to see you enjoying yourself in your endeavors. Yes forget the scruffy rule of thirds and think composition tools. You're looking for all sorts, lines of flow, triangulation, circles, diagonals, arabesque, colour contrasts, and mass. There is a large amount of work on that beach alone
East coast, clear sky at sunset, Belt of Venus dude! I'm itching for one but I think I'm obsessed! Great colours and comps, the less said about Madrid the better :-)
Aye the footy was crap - I know where you’re coming from though it was hazy as fook as well so even that wouldn’t have worked. Wasn’t a problem though still had a nice couple of days
Speaking for myself, I love these kind of images: details, patterns, abstracts close-ups. Great photos and well done! I could feel your pain navigating across all those rocks!
Hi Stuart I was in Northumberland the same week that you were there and although it was great weather for the holiday it was poor for landscape photography, as my wife said 'You're never happy 😁' I also visited Spittal Beach to photograph the patterns in the rocks I really enjoyed it but found the harsh light very challenging with the shadows cast. Definitely a location to return on a cloudier day. Another great vlog
This type of photography I find really enjoyable as you just allow yourself to get lost in searching for comps. Also shows that there's options on a blue sky day! You need a IR camera too lol. Also I'm late catching up on vids...
I enjoyed this sooo much! Why? Creativity personified, right up my street. To find when nothing is obvious. Great shots! I was with the family when I went to Spittal, it was a shocking day. One shot. So now I need to go back lol. Excellent work Stuart, beautiful placement of rocks 🤣🤦🏻♂️
Intimate landscapes are really hard, and it is a real skill to get right. I've enjoyed this 2 part series so far and hope that it inspires other landscapers to give it a go. One thing I find very useful in situations like that which you found yourself is a large plain white umbrella - casts a soft diffuse shadow over the subject and really helps to control those harsh shadows. Yes, you look a bit of a prat using it, and yes it is another bit of kit to carry but often I think it is worth it. All the best sir.
Thanks Huw I didn’t find the harsh light too bad on this occasion but yeah an umbrella would be very useful 👍 thanks for watching glad you enjoyed them
Great fun to do this and really hard aswell!! I really like the second last image, but I think it works even better in portrait orientation. (light is amazing in this image)
Wow, simply wow, Stuart. TH-cam recommended me this video and I have spent 10 minutes discovering something new about the photography today. Would never imagined such beautiful abstract photos that can be created at the beach. Next time I am at the beach will spend more time looking around for a nice shot. Greetings from a fellow photographer and R.Madrid fan in Copenhagen ;)
Some really nice shots there mate! Just simple straightforward photography, using your knowledge and creative eye. This type of photography is right up my street and something I miss from not living at the coast now.
Sorry I missed this Tom appreciate your comment - yeah I really enjoy doing this stuff i'll be doing a lot more in the future with it being less conditions-dependent
Really enjoyed this Stu. Like you, I don't do much of this but it looks really enjoyable. Its interesting that we tend to fall back on this style of photography when conditions aren't ideal but it really should stand up on its own merits. Whilst you mention you don't need to use standard 'rules' having a good knowledge of composition seems really important to help the image flow
Cheers Jamie yeah you’re absolutely right it’s too often a fall back for many when you should really make plans to shoot this whether it’s harsh light or not, I know I will be in the future. What’s interesting when I’m doing this is although subconsciously you’re aware of compositional elements my first instinct is looking for complimentary colour more than anything else
I enjoyed your abstract images. To those that ask if you place the rocks to suit, you could tell them that you found art created by nature and that it would be quicker if you had.
Your integrity in not placing objects into the scene servers to make your images even more interesting and appealing. More please Stuart. Kind regards Robin
Great images, living by the sea myself, I really enjoy these compositions. I put one on Instagram you could have appreciated "Au fil du sable II" It's true that this type of photography makes you look and search around a lot.
Some cracking images there, David...sorry I mean Stuart. You found some gems and was most certainly worth the effort. However, I get the impression though that when there's a plethora of opportunities, some being better than others, it must be a difficult task finding and just focusing on the best ones? Is it easy to become distracted by other potential opportunities that you spot out the corner of your eye?
Cheers Ian it can be a little overwhelming figuring out the bits you want to use as the possibilities are literally endless once you start ‘seeing’ them. What’s great is because it’s not light dependent you can take your time and really refine what you’re doing.
Thanks very much - I think your perhaps mistaken none of the stacked images had the aperture value listed against them, for reference though they were shot at F6.3, and yes because I’m not shooting directly downwards certain areas of the image were out of focus hence the need to focus stack. Two of the images shown didn’t require stacking which was mentioned 👍
@@StuartMcGlennon im tempted to pick up a z6 and that lens, i shoot fuji but want to go back to full frame (worms) but i aint paying sony or canons prices :)
The super resolution thing in camera raw apparently does a good job cleaning up the worms though obviously you’re not going to want to increase every image to those kind of file sizes. All I can say with this lens is I’ve shot some of my favourite images with it so far and it’s doing a great job
@@StuartMcGlennon ive seen that on youtube its a bit of a faff i just stay clear of sharpening and clarity and they are fine, ive just realised the z6 needs xqd cards and man they aint cheap!!!
Hi Andrew normally with standard focus stacks (vista scene focused foreground/mid/background) I normally manually do them as sometimes PS makes a pigs ear of them though with these given there was so many frames (10+) I let PS do it
im in northumberland quite a lot and love it up there ive got sam as u z7 and 24-200 but in process of looking for another lens love look of 14-24 s line ut too pricey for me as looking for wildlife or macro u should take a look at my insta bud my latest pics from nrthumberland amble way done some long exposures then in post turned into black and white but got a bit colour too great vid as always
Would images like this sell in the gallery? I'm afraid it leaves me cold & not something I would shoot or buy as a framed print for the wall. A macro lens is never going to be in my bag. I know many like it but again it is personal choice. Time to go home rest them legs & exercise your vocal cords shouting at the football instead Stuart.
No they’d not sell in the gallery, certainly not in a tourist market as they don’t have mass appeal and are unlikely to connect with the viewer on a personal level. However when I have trips like this I’m only really shooting for myself so it’s not a consideration for me. Like everything though in photography everyone has vastly different tastes etc and you only ever have to please yourself 👍
They might not sell in a gallery but I think they are incredibly visually appealing Stuart. Love the play of the water in one and the warm orange against the cool blue in another. Also love that quote about no such thing as bad light just the wrong subject. I always learn something from your videos and would love to hear more about your compositional thought process. You have a great eye for detail in terms of where to place each element in the scene. Just seeing that alone has taught me to be more thoughtful in approaching the scene. Great lessons for a beginner to observe, thanks.
Not boring Stuart, I really enjoyed that! Thanks for talking us through the process and those are a great set of images. Keep inspiring 🙏🏼🙌🏼
Thanks Jen very kind of you 👍
Great to get outside the comfort zone, always sharpens you up I find. Loved the images, too work as always Stuart 👌
Cheers mate much appreciated
Excellent! My new summer project is born!! Thank you ☺️
Thanks Shannon 👍
Grand stuff to watch! Especially the last image I will not forget.
Thanks Claus
