- After searching for a while and some negotiation I finally found a RV Van that fit most of my wants and needs. I wanted something small that can park in any parking lot, in good condition, and within my budget. The result was I found a local guy here in SoCal with a 1996 Chevy Roadtrek 190 van with 72,000 miles. The van will probably need a tune up, alignment, and even though the generator has only 35 hours it does not really start well so it will need a tune up.
Any suggestions and feedback on where to go or how to maintain and upgrade the van would be greatly appreciated.

Replace ALL interior lights with led's.
You'll gain a tremendous amount of battery usage.
wake the people up by saying, "one led bulb will have the same usage as having all the regular bulbs on at once." Did this in my RV at camp also as well as my Class B. Sound advice.
@@dalegribble60 I think that you mean this the other way around - 1 regular incandescent bulb will use the same energy as 10 LED bulbs ...

I bought a 2003 Roadtrek 190 Popular with 150k miles... had been kept in very good condition and engine ran great... before we ever had a chance to take it for a "test trip" we had to pack it with all we could manage and ran from the Camp Fire of Nov 2018... we lived in it for 6 weeks while waiting to find out if our home was gone or not.. 2 adults and 3 dogs... bottom line - this is a wonderful vehicle.. everything worked and we learned how to use everything as time passed... whoever designed the Roadtrek knew well what they were doing... the big Chevy 350 runs like a top and I have road tested the milage and it gets a steady 15 mpg... not bad at all...better than the 7 - 8 mpg the class C's get... I recommend Roadtrek to anyone interested in class B Rv's...

since everything works and it's in great shape I would just enjoy it as it is.
What ever you do don't paint the inside,just rub the wood work down and varnish.
no way sand and paint, for one the thought of all that dirt and dead skin all over it and that wood soaks up the nasty oders

*I wonder if it's possible to 'Upgrade' to the new generation Lithium batts. and have the new separate 'system-charge only' alternator installed?* *This seems the way to go now, but not if it's several-thousand $$$$ to accomplish it*
*Having 'PV'-panels up-top is still great and ultra-reliable, but the 'true charge-rate' is still mandated by Sun at peak hrs. and that's
only a 'trickle' compared to a specialized alternator that can reach a full-charge in an hour, day or night!*

The button you didnt know what it did, is the control for your side mirrors, hence the arrows. At least thats what I believe it is
I would first make sure it is mechanically sound including all systems including plumbing. For cosmetics, I would pull up the carpet and go with vinyl and/or laminate, replace seat cushion foam and reupholster to update color scheme. Since the passenger seats would be hard to cover and expensive, finding a ready made cover to fit the front seats and then choosing a complimentary color to go with the new flooring, bedspread and or new upholstery in the back. I too would not paint. The wood looks well maintained and maybe a natural cleaner and oil (Murphy's Soap) would renew it even more....just a suggestion. You do what makes you happy in you new home away from home! Happy adventures!

It’s awesome I like that there isn’t so much on hydraulic which can and will fail. Nice size bed stove sink I would buy it leave it original

I disagree with everyone, if I bought one I would paint all the wood white. but I say do what you like and what makes you happy, it's your van to enjoy anyway you want to enjoy it.

I've had mine a month and have already painted most of the wood in it white and I love the look. I only painted the border around the cabinets and covered the inset with a light blue/grey woodgrain removable wallpaper. It gives it a much lighter, upgraded look. Someone told me it would hurt the resale value to paint, but I want it to be what I love, not what someone else in the future may or may not like. Go with what you love!
I love it.. first time seeing this video.. this is exactly what I want in a van! Maybe small improvements like lighting... and some small refrigerator.. add solar panels up top for power off grid or stealth mode..

If you want a great quality cleaner for your wood, mix a cup of windex with a gallon of warm water. After that, to make the finish really pop, use Orange Glo. Not only will it make the wood look alot more newer, it also gives it a great orange smell too. There are plenty of great rug and upholstery cleaning ideas from various TH-cam auto detailing channels. Many include homemade recipes you make yourself. You will also find great ways to enhance the paint on the van, restore oxidized headlight covers and so on.

Mine looks almost the same I just got mine in August 2022 in the murder on yours sounds just like mine quiet and calm but mine has 92,000 miles on it took a trip up north of the steep Mountain and back down

You can re-key for one key all bays. Your mystery button on center console may be air leveling bags but, that generally has gauge close.

Im liking the roadtrek. I see a lot of Dodges but I didn't know they made chevys till I just searched for a chevy version. Hope youre having good luck with it. I'm always happy with a chevy over other brands. Thanks

M4 make high quality LED replacement bulbs. RV Geeks have a good series of videos on swapping out all kinds of lights for LEDs, plus a discount code I think.

Absolutely, don't paint it. They are gems. We have a 170, it's great just the way it is.

This looks like the same RoadTrek for sale in Murrieta. I hear chevy roadtreks ride a lot smoother than the dodge roadtreks... especially in high winds.
If those roof windows open, they're great for getting photos of large critters - like elk, moose, bison, bears. :)

Looks like a conversion-van as opposed to a true camper-van.
Found that interesting too. I have a 1994 GMC conversion van and my dash looks the same. Guess he figured out the controls on the doghouse are for the mirrors.
@@dalegribble60 What I meant is the roof height........on a conversion-van they are usually about 5ft, on a camper-van they are 6ft and up.
@@tickyul It's a typical Class B van to me. The floor is sunk making it possible to walk inside standing straight up. My conversion van has no raised roof and are typically without plumbing of any kind. Really just a fancy passenger van with a few bells and whistles. I found it odd that Roadtrek made real wood dash trim back then. I'm thinking your talking about those camper vans with the REALLY high tops on them? Those are beasts! LOL
@@dalegribble60 Well, I just have a problem with people calling any van, that you cannot fully stand-up in, a camper-van. If you "live" in a van, that you cannot stand-up in, and move around in somewhat, that is some real crap living IMHO.

Good luck with your new RV adventures!! I agree with others, no paint! Murphy’s Soap and elbow grease works great! For the “unknown” button you pointed to: ck your manual or search for a manual online. If all else fails, ask a RoadTrek dealer...they should know. Enjoy.

The four way square switch on the engine housing looks like your passenger mirror adjustment control.
it's for both mirrors, just flip the little switch for L left or R right. the switch is in neutral when it's in the middle position.
Local shop has a '93 - exact same van. $9,900....sound reasonable?
Jollyprez it all depends on the condition and how rare they are in your area. Mine cost more than that but everything is original and its in excellent condition. Good luck!

Yes you can fully stand. The center is raised and the ground is lowered as well.
If you paint the cabinetry , it may affect it's resale value . I looked at a bunch before finding my 2001 RT . I passed on two with painted cabinets , even though the asking prices were lower . Just sayin'....Nice rig btw .

The generator must be run under a load each each month or you will have issues starting it. It's even worse if you run ethanol added gas it so gas treatment helps especially if it sits for a long time. Tires are a critical safety issue because if the extra pressure you typically run. If one blows out because of age or it dried out, it could cause you to lose control or damage the wheel well if it blows. Most RV tires Are replaced every 5 years even with good tread, check the date codes to be sure. Roadtrek are fun and you'll learn by using, have fun and yes I would not paint this inside.

It was a great van however I sold it already. I did not live in it full time but the times I camped out or took it on trips were great! I fixed the stuff that needed fixing so it wasn't bad for an old model. I don't think age matters as long as it is reliable. Good luck!

That R/L thingy with the arrows is the remote mirror adjustment.
Earthlog thanks that is what I thought but I guess it's not working because the mirrors did not move. I'll try it again once I get it back from the shop...getting some maintenance done before I take it out

Joe Federico its really worth what you're willing to pay. I've seen some from 13k-23k but it all depends on the condition. 15k is pretty fair but all depends on the condition. Mine cost a little more than that and i put in some money to update a few things as i go along. Good luck!

Dude definitely not mechanical you tried to stick the key in upside down. 😩😂 and I’m pretty sure that thingy you pressed controls the mirrors. 😂😂 Great find tho especially with the mileage on it and it’s quiet and I didn’t see any lights but we all know the issues with anything used but hopefully you purchased it from someone who kept the maintenance up over the years! Best believe you will discover a few issues along the way because nothings built to last forever. I would take it in and tune it up and get it checked out for any major issues and fix them if any and then just enjoy the future outings in it. It would be dope if you did repaint the interior and new carpet if that’s in the budget and I’m liking the vans being painted in the truck bed liner nowadays as well. Great Find Good Luck!!

Title is a 96 but I believe it was sold late 95. Said 96 because I go by title

@@snakeclaw yeah its strange they always get confused when I smog it because the 96 has a different smog process than a 95 so they have to do it as a 95 eventhough it's a 96 on paper🤷♂️

The older classic style G-vans were built through 96 in G30 form. OBD1 TBI engines not the newer Vortecs.
