  • Samson were one of the crucial bands of the NWOBHM movement. They released some amazing albums back in the early 80s. Drummer Barry Graham Purkis was a focal point of the band with his larger-than-life Thunderstick persona. Bruce Dickinson sang for Samson before joining Iron Maiden. Samson were a great band with enormous potential, but for a variety of reasons had never quite reached the next level. Needless to say, their music has stood the test of time and continues to inspire fans and bands around the globe.
Drummer, Barry Graham Purkis, reflects on his time with Samson, the creation of the Thunderstick character, and his current solo band.
The interview was conducted by Mark Kadzielawa through ZOOM on November 23, 2024.

What a great interview. I saw them at reading before Bruce left and thought they were great.

Big Samson fan from the late seventies, wild man Thunderstick was very well known in the day for his unique drum sound, crazy cage and stage antics. Great interview.

They played Colwyn Bay Peir about 1980 with Bruce. Probably 30 bob to see that. Yep indeed. Bargain.
