Why I'm selling the Carinthia Observer plus AKA NL Observer plus

  • I bought a pretty expensive Bivvy tent style bag called the Dutch NL Observer plus. This video I give you a quick look at some of the features - it is an awesome piece of kit. This is identical to a Carinthia Observer plus and is made by Carinthia but comes in Camo instead of the sand color. In fortunately for me it doesn't really work as a sleep system so I am going to sell it and try something else.

    That bivy is especially made for snipers and not for comfortable camping nights ;)
    I've that bivy too and i used it for stealth camping.
    Here in germany it's forbidden to wildcamp in the forests.
    Thanks for the Video!

    Full storm ready, completely free standing, the most ventilation I've seen on that style bivy. super cool!

    That is one awesome peace of gear. I would never have got rid of it, if only for the top quality. This Observer is used by the Dutch army, but Carinthia is an Austrian brand, made in Austria ( not in Asia ). This Observer beats the Snugpak ( or similar models of other brands ) on every level . You'll soon find out, because: the headroom on these other sniper-style bivy tens is much lower, so you'll feel even more claustrophobic, and the Ionosphere ( and similar style bivys ) are not as breathable as the superior Carinthia bags, so you'll experience condensation issues. Your problem with the Carinthia Observer could have been solved by just opening the side zipper. If needed, you could've put a mosquito net over it against the bugs, or combine it with a tarp against heavy precipitation. But you'll never find a bivy tent of the same high quality as this Carinthia.

      I agree - I miss it and every so often regret selling it. I've got a lot of use out of the snugpack I use now though as it's a good piece of gear.

    Just bought one for the bloody price of 500€ but I couldn’t really find this variant anywhere else so I took the chance.
    I have the more common smaller one currently and just like you said I feel like the head area is very limited and small on that one.
    I also like how you can open this one at multiple places! I’ll have to see how well I serves me here in the north of Sweden, the mosquito’s here during the summertime is no joke!
    I’ll probably sell my smaller one just to feel a bit better over the money I just spent on this one hehe…

    Hi mate thanks for making this video. Its a bit older now but was just wondering if you could say what your experience was with condensation on dry nights? with the mesh open both ends did you find you legs still got a bit damp or did the goretex breath really well and keep you nice and dry?. Cheers Mike

      Sorry somehow missed this comment. Actually the goretex is amazing and never had any bad condensation issues. Worst night, humid and around 25+ degrees C overnight there was only a small amount of condensation along a zip line. Basically another other weather conditions nothing.

    A pity really - I'm also a side-sleeper, but very un-claustrophobic, and I'm mostly put off by the EUR 649 price tag of a new one (or ~EUR 400+ of an ebay one), though I bet they'd be worth it. I assume that you're very accustomed to sleeping on your left side, to the extent that opening up the main flap on the right a little didn't help?

      yep nailed it - left side and while opened it brought in air but didn't solve the issue of making it comfortable. I'm too old and too tired to be uncomfortable camping anymore. Agreed the price is steep. Occasionally they come up second hand but they hold their value so there's not much saving. The US military sleep system with the bags and goretex Bivy is a decent option, lacks some of the features of the Observer but they are available at a cheaper price.

    Here is an excellent introduction to the tent th-cam.com/video/sgpD1D4kmDE/w-d-xo.html I believe Sandy from Jacklore has the smaller version of this and uses it in his adventures.

      Awesome thanks. I have seen this one before on the web. I have never seen it for sale here down under though so it makes it an expensive proposition. The uS and the UK get a far better deal on some things.

      I agree but if you go to the site I have linked to ,its in new zealand,you can just buy the inner or the smaller version or they also have a tyvac fully sealed mesh tent for about 90 bucks aus

    robens starlight 1 will be a lot better !

    • @reviewsandprojects
      @reviewsandprojects  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a bad looking tent but completely different. One is a goretex bivy and the other a pretty traditional looking hiking tent

    • @carforumwanker
      @carforumwanker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@reviewsandprojects hardly any weight difference. Far more room and less condensation. This is critical in cold weather as a persons gear will be soaking wet after 48 hours !
