I used to have a 5 magnet magneto. I always thought they were d.c. but another vlogger said it was a.c. anyway nice job on the restoration. Maybe use it for a radio. Thanks brings back memories.😅

Very nice restoration! When you strengthened the brass plate, you did something that surprised me: you put the side with the important stamped patent date *face down* on that nasty brick; weren't you worried about scratching up the patent info? Also, are you sure you replaced the magnets correctly? Best procedure is to mark them (dab of paint, whatever) for N and S before you remove them. They must all be assembled w/ matching polarity or the electrical output will be greatly diminished. (The two magnets should repel each other if assembled correctly; if they attract each other one of them is reversed.) Also, a good note is to be *very* careful when working around the fine wire windings: one broken or shorted wire and the magneto is kaput. But, as I said, a beautiful restoration. ~~~~~ As far as a use for it, I don't think it's practical for a phone charger. You'd need to crank really fast to get 120v to power a wall-wart for the charger. Or else crank it really slowly and use a diode bridge and voltage regulator to get low voltage DC to directly charge a battery. In either case, do you want to be cranking continuously for an hour or so? When I was a kid (60 years ago) people used them as "worm shockers" (check Google) but I never tried this. ~~~~~ When new, these magnetos and telephone ringers were designed as a system to work well in conjunction with miles of telephone wire. They still work well for that. But the magnets are much weaker than modern magnets, and they lose strength with age, so these magnetos are pretty inefficient by today's standards. Bottom line, use it as a science demo gadget to ring a telephone bell or light a low-wattage 120v light bulb. It's surprising to see how much mechanical effort is needed to produce 25 watts of electricity!

Nice job. My brothers and I had an old magneto like this we played with. We had lots of fun shocking our friends. In fact, I still have it, 55 years later.

When I got my first magneto I mistakenly thought it was 12volts DC. So to test it, I touched it to my tongue! Yipes!!!! was I in for a shock!

Very cool, I would use this as an emergency battery charger in a bunker. Well first I have to dug up the bunker.

I restored one just like this. I use it to light up an led lightbulb and for mild shocking but i can not get it to ring a bell. I might need a transformer... the bell i am using is for a doorbell.

I can say this is a western electric 2 bar magneto.
