Magneto and Thumb Restoration

The 6th video from The Ministry Of Temporal Mechanics. This time Rob is restoring an antique magneto and building a time machine which actually appears to work. Now how should the restored magneto be used? Any suggestions? music by Bensound
Creating A Seltzer Bottle Lamp

This is the 5th in a series of videos from The Ministry Of Temporal Mechanics. My videos mostly involve time traveling through close contact and restoration of vintage and antique objects. In this video, I repurpose a vintage seltzer bottle into an accent light fixture. I learn so much with each endeavor and hope you might get something out of the experience as well. Make comments. Ask question...

Are you able to show a picture of exactly where the microphones are?
The Time Maschine Project viele gute👍👍👍👍👍🙏🙏
I can say this is a western electric 2 bar magneto.
I used to have a 5 magnet magneto. I always thought they were d.c. but another vlogger said it was a.c. anyway nice job on the restoration. Maybe use it for a radio. Thanks brings back memories.😅
I restored one just like this. I use it to light up an led lightbulb and for mild shocking but i can not get it to ring a bell. I might need a transformer... the bell i am using is for a doorbell.
J'adore c'est une idée géniale... I love it, it’s a brilliant idea
Hey, I know that guy! How’s the Time Machine doing?
Pro tip Google home mini's are cheaper and easier to reverse engineer but are only available on the used market
Very nice restoration! When you strengthened the brass plate, you did something that surprised me: you put the side with the important stamped patent date *face down* on that nasty brick; weren't you worried about scratching up the patent info? Also, are you sure you replaced the magnets correctly? Best procedure is to mark them (dab of paint, whatever) for N and S before you remove them. They must all be assembled w/ matching polarity or the electrical output will be greatly diminished. (The two magnets should repel each other if assembled correctly; if they attract each other one of them is reversed.) Also, a good note is to be *very* careful when working around the fine wire windings: one broken or shorted wire and the magneto is kaput. But, as I said, a beautiful restoration. ~~~~~ As far as a use for it, I don't think it's practical for a phone charger. You'd need to crank really fast to get 120v to power a wall-wart for the charger. Or else crank it really slowly and use a diode bridge and voltage regulator to get low voltage DC to directly charge a battery. In either case, do you want to be cranking continuously for an hour or so? When I was a kid (60 years ago) people used them as "worm shockers" (check Google) but I never tried this. ~~~~~ When new, these magnetos and telephone ringers were designed as a system to work well in conjunction with miles of telephone wire. They still work well for that. But the magnets are much weaker than modern magnets, and they lose strength with age, so these magnetos are pretty inefficient by today's standards. Bottom line, use it as a science demo gadget to ring a telephone bell or light a low-wattage 120v light bulb. It's surprising to see how much mechanical effort is needed to produce 25 watts of electricity!
I like the trick with acetone and cardboard! Nice!
is there any possibility to contact you by e-mail? I need your help! Thank You!
Would black nailpolish work?
Sorry, I am having a medical issues. The only nail polish probably be gloss instead of flat. I have not done that before
Great! Thank you for the paint trick!
I have an older 6 inch diameter pressure gauge with a broken lens. The bezel is soldered to the body of the gauge. How can I remove the bezel to replace lens? thanks for the tip on renewing the dial numbers.
Looking to restore a brass Aston 291-A GAUGE FOR A Soo steam enginge generator 1909
Amazing restoration! Do you have any suggestions on how to restore steam gauges with painted faces?
Wondering if you've found anyways to restore the Springfield and similar design humidity gauges? Wondering if there is some sort of standardized solution mix where dipping and drying maybe in some way might be a way? Great work!
I've used hair dryer to heat up ring to be able to screw the glass front off.
Great suggestion
Very nice restoration Rob!
Rob, this is brilliant, no pun intended. Such a great idea, beautifully executed.
Rob, I like this even more than the Breakfaster conversion. Brilliant. Makes me wish I had saved my old -60s clock radio. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic work. But what if I want a fried egg?
So acetone would melt modern plastics?
Yes and no as it turns out. Then the shocker: acetone occurs naturally in the human body.
Yes , Acetone will quickly dissolve styrene, ABS and other plastics. Acrylic is a contemporary plastic which will hold up to acetone if the contact is brief. I always test any solvent before using it on plastic. (a lesson I learned the hard way)😁
Such an amazing light... but does it still make toast?
Where was this video when I was learning how to do this? I've messed up more gauges than I care to admit. I like the acetone on cardboard trick. I will definitely be doing that in the future. I have been gently abrading the surface to remove excess surface paint, but I haven't been happy with how easy it is to either ruin the finish or else ruin the paint job. What do you do in cases there the etching is essentially a negative, that is, when the features are raised and everything else is in-painted? You see this a lot, for example, on the metal badges of wood box style meters. I am much more interested in finding a way to reproduce scales on gauge faces for which the original screen printed scale has been damaged or deteriorated, because that is far more common for the devices I restore. I don't want to do screen printing for a variety of reasons, but I do have access to a laser cutter. I've experimented with several techniques without success.
Every home must have that! At least mine does.

oh this is just great. Well Done!
This is awesome Rob 👌
Have to say I’m geeky enough to have found this fascinating. What a sound notion!
Amazing and inspiring as always, Rob!
Wow. Just wow. That’s amazing
Love the music too.
How's your thumb?
Restored!
Refer to 7:42 of the video.
Very cool, I would use this as an emergency battery charger in a bunker. Well first I have to dug up the bunker.
Nice job. My brothers and I had an old magneto like this we played with. We had lots of fun shocking our friends. In fact, I still have it, 55 years later.
When I got my first magneto I mistakenly thought it was 12volts DC. So to test it, I touched it to my tongue! Yipes!!!! was I in for a shock!
Beautiful work!
Your voice is satisfying
Great to see how these are made - had no idea how you cut the bottle!
Really like this project!
Rob, you are truly insane. In a good way.
Beautiful finish... Looks as good as new
Awesome! Master Craftsmnship!
