@@floritahhh they most likely thought the IRS might come after the guy for selling guitars out of his place and not paying taxes from his sales. I bet that's it, the guy they got their guitars from probably just did it as a side venture and just never paid taxes. Even though, the guy who sold the guitars I imagine didn't want that known since he apparently sold a lot of guitars. He would have probably owed the government money.
That's actually what I did. I heard them play 'Last Nite' on some late night talk show and instantly enjoyed the song. Next day, I bought the album and loved the entire record. So yeah, I listened to their music first and then I got interested in them as a band.
First time I saw this interview I thought Nardwuar was just a pain in the ass. Now I notice how all of the things he asks and tells them are just a mean to portray Jules and Nick perfectly and make their personalities stand out. They were both so young, humble, real, and quite naive too... Would love to see a Nardwuar vs The Strokes in 2014!
On a previous video (Part 2?) I said Nardwuar was rude and annoying and that the whole interview frustrated me. But now at the end I realize this is one of the few interviews that you actually see Julian and Nick's personalities and hear what they think and feel about their music and experiences. This by far beats those interviews that are set up like a game of 20 questions. I wish this interview was longer now! They were so young, I want to see more of them at this age.
1:29-1:51 :') Thats what I've always thought about the strokes' music! Their music is my best friend in life. Words couldn't ever describe how much I love this band. And I know Julian, what music can be to a human beign its hard to explain :')
Everybody says that Narduar is usually a lot less annoying and I feel like because it's the Strokes and they don't like interviews and you usually get one worded responses from them, he had to push more to get more. And in the end it worked, I've been binge watching interview and what the fuck else on the Strokes for a month and this is the best, most complete interview I've seen about them. It's good to see their personalities. Hope they saw this interview and realized he only wanted to put them in a good light ^^
5:11 Unintentional in this instance, but Jules responding to a mic thrust in his face by nonchalantly lighting a cigarette is a perfect Strokes moment. Those kids had their own sense of time.
Don't think they are annoyed. Julian is just really placid, possibly tired and always deep in thought. Nick is being himself. Nardwuar's act has always been awkward comedy. So what's the problem? You get to see the band answering questions for the Is This It album. It's cool footage.
1:51 yea Julian was just tired right there and that’s why he said that, not because he got annoyed with nard moving the mic out of the way when he was answering a question with actually heart to it
There are many things that you don't need when you're hungover but two of them would be: 1) having to think quickly and speak articulately, 2) someone being upbeat, loud and chatty around you. I think J and N took it in good humour considering their hangovers and the chaotic nature of the interview.
These guys genuinely seem to have no idea how fucking crazy huge they were going to get. This is also the most annoying Nardwuar has ever been, and I’m here for it.
When Jules says when music is the "best kind" that hits you..so you're emotionally moved...he has no idea here in 2001 just what his lyrics and music (and the Strokes playing together) will do for all of us over the years!!!
The Strokes are actually my favorite band, and oddly enough I knew there music way before I knew them. That being said I also love nardwuar. He is no different in this interview than any other. The thing is as they said several times they don't like interviews. They are very pessimistic about them and their thought process was that this interview would end up being edited to make them look like total douche bags, but differently it didn't get edited. I wish they would do a second interview together, I feel like the second would be a lot better because they wouldn't be as critical as they were to the whole interviewing process with nardwuar and just realize it's a lot about fun and showing a possible real personality.
I love the Strokes and I love Nardwuar too but cmon, something was up here.. I mean, Nardwuar didn't even give them gifts lol. But yeah that would be great if Nardwuar could do another interview with them or at least with Julian. I agree that it would be a better interview than the first since Nardwuar is more well known now and so is Julian.
butlerbulldogs05 I might be wrong, but Nardwuar didn't start doing gifts until later on (this interview being in 2001). I know he didn't do any gifts in his '90s interviews, but it's probably because his group didn't have the money to just get the gifts just yet.
Omg, these guys had no idea an interview could be like this. I really wish for another Strokes interview with the new Nardwuar. It would be perfect and go way smoother.
I bet after this the guys thought, 'man, that interviewer was annoying' or something like that and that's probably why they never have done an interview with him since.
He says yeah ive been trying to say it this whole interview but your probably going to edit it. Most of their interviews have been edited and changed and skewed, thats why they dont recognize any of the quotes Nardwuar throws at them. However look at this interview, its in 4 parts...its about 4 times as long as the average Nardwuar interview (8 min). It doesnt seem like Nardwuar edited any of it. He left it all out there, and as I said Nardwuar is not an idiot, he comes across as a douche
I like how so many people think Nardwuar was being rude but I feel like it was the other way, I believe they at the time had a preconceived notion on how journalism was conducted from their own anecdotal experiences. And assumed every question Nardwuar asked was some sort of set-up to trap them in some wild statements.
