that would be really fascinating to see what the Nard could drag up. so much has happened the past 19 years and there's gotta be some good touring stories
"These guys are The Strokes" - Interviewer "Ohh really? I love you guys!" - Chick "They suck man, they suck!" - drunk dude in the backround "Is that how you're going to welcome them to Vancouver?" - Interviewer "Fuck off... get out of my town" HAHAHAH
I remember the first time I heard Julians voice and thinking it was the most beautiful life changing sound ever. Yes I find Julian very attractive but there's so much more to him and his music. Its intriguing!
@Francisco Antonio just because you’re famous doesn’t make you not only care about the music. It’s not fully up to yourself to become famous or not there’s a lot of factors lol
well, my personal favorite it was one of the first full rock albums I've ever heard and also one of the one that got me into rock at all. I just worded that in an over-opinionated way, I definitely understand "to each his own".
nardwuar was a total dick throughout this interview and i think it's bc since knew that every member of the strokes was the son of a millionaire/celebrity, and they all look like fashion models, nardwuar probably didnt take them seriously. nardwuar's from punk, he probably enjoyed trolling a band he thought were made up of spoiled rich brats whose music would probably suck and the whole band would eventually be forgotten. i think only a single had come out when this interview took place; hardly anyone was aware of the talent of the strokes. nardwuar is a GOAT interviewer, but i think he underestimated these guys. the awkwardness does make this a hilarious interview tho
I have a theory that Nardwuar is always kind of antagonistic and patronizing. I think his "character" started as a subversive joke (remember, he was in a hardcore punk rock band before all his fame as an interviewer so he's at least somewhat self aware). He's faux-nice but it comes off pretty passive aggressive sometimes. In his early interviews he was regularly combative (eg the one with Beck where he was a total dick). He acted snotty toward a lot of indie acts in the 90s and early 00s. Then suddenly he shifted focus from punk/indie to mainstream rap music, which also seemed odd to say the least. In his interviews with young black rappers for example, you have to wonder if a white Canadian in his 50s is constantly mispronouncing "Lil Uzi" on purpose. Constantly referring to Snoop Dogg as 'Snoop Doggy Dogg' in almost a sarcastic fashion, like he's mocking him to his face. I don't know. His grab bag of tricks can be interesting at times but this interview is a great example of how he's actually kind of an undercover cock.
@@boozerverif I know it was once what people referred to him as, but Nardwuar refers to him (in most of the interviews, years after he became known as just Snoop or Snoop Dogg) by his full name an almost obnoxious amount of times... It comes off almost patronizing to me. It'd be like if someone constantly referred to you by your full name in a conversation. You'd start to be like, why is this person using my full name?
Why is nardwuar trying to irritate them so much? He's usually much more humble and excited about the band but he comes off cocky and annoying here. Clearly he could have been able to tell that they weren't in the mood, so why prod them like that?
+Matteo Russo Because that's his style. The great thing about Nardwuars interviews is that you don't hear the usual generic questions and answers. This particular interview occurred during the peak of the Strokes's fame and mania. If anyone is to blame for the mundane vibe of the interview it's Julian's and Nick's egos.
+Charles Cross that's how i know you're stupid. producers dont write shit.. hes a super producer and hes made tons of money and got nothin but platinum plaques 10 yrs straight. anyone who hates on that aint cool period
I think this interview with Fab and Nikolai would've been a lot better, at the time. Fab because he's so silly and he could handle Nardwuar and Nikolai because the awkwardness would be ridiculously hilarious.
It seems like Julian is tired of people saying he's just a rich kid and he pays his way through life by being in his dad's shadow. I feel bad that a lot of people think he's stuck up. That's so untrue. I think he acts stuck up now that he's older because he's making fun of what everyone has said about him. I loved at Coachella this year when he talked about arriving on his diamond encrusted private jet - it shows that he's trying not to let it get to him and not take it all too seriously.
It's really interesting to see him talk about people caring about their image and not listening to the music yet just before they were about to drop one of the best rock albums of the decade
I think this is the best strokes interview, and possibly the best nardwuar interview. This is their prime. This is him going with the flow, being as honest as possible.
One of Nardwuar’s more awkward interviews but I like to see it because it shows how long he’s been doing this and that not every interview is a banger but interesting in their own way
I think Nardwar was asking these questions so they had a chance to set the record straight about who they are. They are annoyed but the whole time they get a chance to explain who they really are and not let the media talk for them.
Honestly he comes off as weirdly persistent and preconceived (!?). Nardwuar is usually more genuine and more friendly, this is also pretty old, times then were somewhat different.
This is the first interview where I have sided with the band, nard is being a tool. I've never seen that before he's normally really cool and the band are v patient with him.
I know this comment is old, but I think Nard is actually trying to help them because he likes them. Every question I think makes the strokes look good because they’re directed that way. Nardwuar is a master interviewer and if you notice he calls out that rude drunk in a serious tone because he’s embarrassed about that guy treating the strokes rudely.
Nardwar is a good interviewer. I mean, he uses annoying techniques on purpose so he can get a lot of info. He asks questions several times just so the answers get more especific. I mean, this interview is awkward to watch, and if I was Julian or Nick I would be just as uncomfortable as them, but actually this is the best interview to the strokes i've seen so far. Look how much Julian speaks, for gods sake. And all the interesting things he says. Usually other interviewers ask shitty questions and get shitty answers, but the answers of Jules and Nick in this one are gold.
This is the worse Nardwuar interview I've seen yet. He usually pays a great compliment to the artist he is interviewing, and portrays their artistic and cultural references in a very informed way. In this case, he is just taking the piss... maybe he just likes hip hop and punk and doesnt respect the strokes music ? If thats so well, this is one interview he maybe shouldn't have done... or I at least shouldnt have seen.
this is not it, if you look closely, you can see a much music microphone, this was the periode where nardwuar didn't had the liberty he used to because of much music.
