  • Sena 20S Bluetooth Headset Review www.revzilla.co... Designed as to be one of the most preeminent communicators on the market, the new Sena 20S brings an updated list of features and functionality to one of the most popular lineups in the game. Aside from the premium quality and engineering that comes with the Sena brand, the new 20S increases range over previous iterations by 25%, which extends connectivity to over a mile. At the same time, you will also be able to connect up to 8 rider-to-rider communications for the first time. Another new feature can be seen in the blending of 2 inputs at a time that has previously been unavailable. In doing so, riders have the capability to hear GPS directions while on the phone, phone conversations while listening to music, etc. Additional upgrades include universal connectivity to other bluetooth units, the use of Bluetooth 4.0 for extended battery life, and a new iPhone/Android app that allows for maximum control and personalization.

    you know what would be nice to add to communication device reviews? A decibel meter reading. It would help buyers understand how loud the speakers are. You of course will need a control; a sound anyone can compare like sending a signal to the speakers and play the same on an phone to test loudness is it louder or quieter than the phone or something to that degree.

    +Don Post What you're referring to is called Multi-Way Intercom or Group Intercom, and the Sena 20S does allow this. A total of eight 20S users can have a group intercom or "party line" simultaneously (you and seven other 20S users). This can be set up directly through the communicators or via Sena's companion smartphone app. On a side note, the Sena SMH10 actually allows this as well for up to four people (you and three others). See section 15 of the 20S manual and sections 14 and 15 of the SMH10 manual. -DrewZilla

      +Thang Tran good question

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Thang Tran For group intercom of 8 users, all devices must be the 20S. With other Sena communicators, the total number of users in a group intercom is 4 (you + 3 others). The 20S also features "universal intercom pairing" for one non-Sena communicator, so in a group intercom, you could have a 20S, a UCLEAR HBC200, and two other Sena devices. -DrewZilla

    Currently using my first Sena product : SMH5
    Love it, not too big not to small, good qaulity and very easy to use with the jogdial.
    Getting the speakers into my current helmet: AGV K3
    Was a bit of trick, since there are no places build in, to put speakers. And there is very little room in it.
    After a bit of a try i was able to put the speakers behind the cheekpads. Probably not the best fix but it works. Maybe the only thing i can do is make a small recess in the cheekpads, but thats something to try for later.
    I'm pretty sure ill be sticking with Sena for a different Bluetooth system, great products.

    I like the features the 20S has but when looking at the reviews on Amazon a full third of the reviews are 3 stars or less. Many of the complaints are about it being flimsy. Is this accurate or just naysayers being negative?

    I just recently bought the 20s and I love it. The only complaint that I have is when I am listening to music on a comfortable level. When an incoming phone calls come in or I use my phones' voice feature it is turned all the way up. I have talked to Sena and was told that my phone audio was to loud. But I adjusted my phone volume and it did not make a difference.

    Now from an end user's point of view. I bought 2 10S dual packs, both new. The documentation was in many languages, but not English. I got the devices to power on, and they receive static PERFECTLY. That's it. The web site was no help. I repeatedly tried to contact support. They are apparently unable to communicate in English. I tried emailing support. No response. I did reach them through social media. They referred me to their web site, and sent me documentation that has no bearing on the 10S. Supposedly, these come pre-paired. These did not. Even the radio won't turn on. These were purchased through different dealers on different dates. Among the items missing from the box are the adhesive pads and the wrench. The speakers will not stick to my helmets. Worse yet, the clips do not hold the units in place. Even when clipped into place, they fall out with a gentle shake of the helmet. This isn't just one. All 4 exhibit these issues. Wednesday will be 2 weeks I've been trying to get support from sena. I am forced to return these expensive paperweights.

      @RevZilla  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      João Soares Cha cha cha cha changes......The G9X can pair up to 8 riders singly, but only 4 riders as a group chat. The 20S can do up to 8 in a group chat, although that would be chaos (IMO). -Hi-Viz Brian

      Rubos005 They should work well together. I recommend using the hybrid boom rather than the fixed boom. That way, you can mount the hybrid boom inside the helmet behind the left cheek pad and have more flexibility on where to position the main communicator clamp on the left side of the helmet. Hope this helps! -DrewZilla

    does the 20 offer conference calls? for example on the sena 10's you had to push the knob 1 to talk to rider 1, twice to talk to rider 2, 3 for rider 3.... kinda annoying when riding in a group. so does the 20 have a "party line" where the link is open for all riders and no need to identify a rider by button pushing. yelling out HEY BOB! would be a lot more fun

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Chris Bleam Yes, it can be mounted on a half helmet. We don't have a photo of the 20S on a half helmet, but it will look almost identical to this SMH10 mounted on a half helmet. If your half helmet has speaker pockets, you can use the included helmet speakers. If your half helmet leaves your ears exposed, you can disconnect the helmet speakers and connect earbuds to the 20S' standard audio jack. -DrewZilla

    2 questions: can my sena 20S be connected to a USB on my softail deluxe in the event my phone battery goes dead? As a backup plan.
    Next, we lock our helmets to our bikes and take the sena module with us, im worried about theft. do i have to pair them again when attaching them back on our helmets?

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure I understand the first part. For intercom use with another 20S, your cell phone is not necessary. Your phone is only necessary if you're streaming music to the 20S or making a phone call via the 20S. If you're asking whether you can use the 20S to listen to music stored on a USB flash drive, then the answer is no. If you're asking whether you can charge the 20S via a USB cable plugged into your motorcycle, then the answer is yes. As for re-pairing, no, you do not need to re-pair the communicators after removing them from your helmets. -DrewZilla

      I am eagerly waiting for the fixed version to be available mainstream. be careful with this product, the little plastic tongue that holds the base unit safe in the clamp/cradle, sitting solid on the connector pins gives way, breaks and is just poorly designed in the first iteration of this product. Sena started shipping out fixed versions with metal tongue instead of plastic around late February. If you have one with plastic tongue know that it will break.

    How is the audio quality of the speakers? Is there sufficient bass? I currently wear earbuds and would wear earplugs with the speakers to keep wind noise in my helmet down. Will the speakers get loud enough to still be able to enjoy the music?

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They aren't studio-quality, but the 20S has a standard audio jack, so you can swap the stock speakers for sound-isolating molded earbuds or larger speakers. The Koss KTXPRO1 headphone speakers (removed from the headphone housing) are a popular swap. -DrewZilla

    Is it difficult to raise/lower the antennae on your Sena 20S with gloves on? What about with Winter gloves on? Is the antennae flimsy when it’s up like it could break off?

    • @RevZilla

    If you plug earbuds into the device, will it mute the ear-speakers?
    Im asking because im thinking of using a 3.5mm male-male cable to connect the sena to a gopro's mic input, so that all the communication between riders can be recorded directly into the gopro video too.

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NinjasAndTeles Yes, if you plug a cable into the audio jack, it mutes the speakers. However, if you were to use a standard Y-splitter cable, you could plug the splitter cable into the audio jack, then plug both the speakers and the male-male cable into the splitter. That adds a lot of wires though. -DrewZilla

    I think I am basically sold. Just one clarifying question. I think you touched on it, just want to make sure I understand correctly. I want the senaS20 to listen to music but occasionally be able to talk to my partner rider if needed. My understanding is that you can do that with this product. If I have music playing, is it similar to a cars navigation lowering the music while the other person speaks to you? Do they also hear the music you are playing? Does it mute you while you are listening to music or is the boom mic always on? This is important, because no one needs to hear me singing along as I ride! LOL But I would like to be able to speak to someone if I need to... ;) thx

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MissDrift2008 Yes, you can listen to music as well as have an intercom conversation with a riding partner. The Sena 20S is currently the only communicator with audio multitasking. That means instead of the music pausing and cutting out when having an intercom conversation, the music will continue to play quietly in the background while on intercom. The riding partner will not hear your music, only the conversation. As for the microphone, it is only on when on a phone call or during an intercom conversation. Just remember to end the intercom conversation by tapping the side jog dial before singing along with the tunes! -DrewZilla

    So, if you use Apple Ear Pods, what is used as an antenna for the radio? Do you lose the radio stations since you have no antenna? Also wanted to know what the extra bracket with the 3M tape is for?

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      By ear pods, do you mean in-ear headphones with a standard 3.5mm plug? If so, the headphone cord acts as the antenna. If you are referring to the wireless Air Pods, then those cannot be used with this or any Bluetooth communicator. Additionally, if your Apple headphones use a Lightning connector, those are also incompatible. Generally speaking, it's best to just use the included speakers. As for the extra bracket, that is used if your helmet cannot accept the standard clamp mount. In that case, you use the adhesive to attach the mount to the side of the helmet. -DrewZilla

    Ok this may sound like a silly question. But here it goes. I am looking for a good communicator for my husband and I and so far am sold on this delightful little goody. However here is my problem. I have an iphone where my husband still runs a non-smart phone device that looks like something from the dinosaur era. LOL. Ok maybe not quite that old, but needless to say it is not a smart phone. The small amount of research that I have done tells me that this won't be a problem as I can set up both devices from my phone, however what are your thoughts on this?

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For intercom communication, the 20S doesn't even require a phone at all. If all your husband needs is to be able to talk to you, he could have no phone at all. For you, you can pair your iPhone to your communicator, in order to stream music or make/take phone calls. -DrewZilla

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Rogue isn't ideal for the 20S or even most communicators honestly. Because of the shape of the shell, there's no good way to attach a communicator or mount a microphone boom. If communication is important to you, I'd recommend he get a helmet to use when you ride together. The Biltwell Gringo is a popular option with a cool retro look that can accept the 20S or other communicators. -DrewZilla

    I have a BMW K1600GTL with the stereo and bluetooth support. Do you know how well the 20S works with this system? Will I be able to control the radio volume via the bike controls? Also, will it pair correctly so that I can have a rider and passenger paired through the bike?

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      DucStewie BMW doesn't officially support the Sena 20S, so Sena cannot guarantee full compatibility. Some have been able to connect a single 20S to the bike, but you lose volume control through the grip. Also, you cannot pair both rider and passenger to the bike. Only one can connect, and as it's not fully compatible, sometimes it will randomly disconnect. BMW designed the bike to only work with their own BMW Headset, so that's the only one that's fully compatible. -DrewZilla

      davidkbrown The 20S does not include in-ear earbuds, but it includes the helmet speakers. The included speakers will fit in the X-12, but the comfort really depends on the shape of your ears and how far they stick out. They'd likely touch your ears a bit. -DrewZilla

      @RevZilla  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pj Mac While the larger speakers of the 20S improve sound quality, they are a little big to fit down into the speaker recesses in the GT-Air. However, you can use the Velcro spacers included with the 20S to take up some space in the recesses, which bring the speakers a little closer to your ears for better attenuation. You can also leave the stock Shoei ear pads in place and attach the 20S speakers directly to the ear pads. -DrewZilla

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it works for Spotify, just like using Bluetooth headphones. You stream Spotify on your phone, and the audio is pushed to the 20S via Bluetooth. The 20S itself is not a cell phone. You need to pair it to a cell phone, in order to use all the phone's features. The 20S, itself, provides the integration with a helmet as well as the long-range intercom connections with other Sena devices in your riding group. -DrewZilla

      One other problem is that the Sena volume control is having to compete with wind noise on top of (Ducati Panigale) engine noise AND my use of earplugs. You can only turn up the Sena sound volume so much, and it seems like Sena's volume range is too low to compete.
