I would suggest you to use apps. It's a blessing.
For English - English, you can use 'ENGLISH DICTIONARY' app from 'Livio'... mild green/blue colour book icon with British flag on it.
For English - Tamil, you can use 'ENGLISH TAMIL' dictionary from 'Innovative'... open book icon with த - E on it.
