I am absolutely loving watching this old video of Hugh, Chris and myself back in the good ole days when we could tour and travel! Stay sensible and hopefully we'll be out of this soon! Much love to all music fans out there. Xx!
Got to be his best ever live solo performance.. with cat Campbell.. and drummer… th range of songs he did at the rockpalast…. Was tremendous… the German fraud… dancing for germania…..best I have ever seen and head him solo..
Pretty cool for a 3 piece and hats off to Hugh Cornwell for writing such great songs in the first place. No keyboards is a shame but who could ever replace the genius of the late great Dave Greenfield anyway?
@@diesekaltewelt807 The mark of a good song, doesn't matter what instruments you use if the song stands up regardless. The keyboard parts were definitely great and memorable additions
What a great guitarist Hugh actually is! Beautifully constructed solo in the Down In The Sewer! AND in Walk on By! Plus, how bad ass Caz and Chris are! Hugh put together such an effective combo!
Easily the best Hugh line up and performance on here - love Hugh's guitar noodling to fill in for Dave's keyboard solos and Caz is a powerhouse making those JJ basslines look effortless!
I saw this amazing trio in a small club in Hamburg , too few people in the audience but they were brillant! After the gig, wow, a small conversation with Hugh, told him my fav song of the gig was BearCage! I admire all his songs since 1978 and for me, the more a familiar song differs from the original the BETTER for my ears! (Even without trumpet) IT was seldom played by The Stranglers live, and the trio now prepared it well... . Then Hugh explained me the word 'gerrymander', I asked for, didnt know what it means for 28 years?!?. Really smart and a brillant musician. I love this guy (and his BLACK humour)
Great comments. I first saw Hugh with the stranglers back in 1981 (I was16 and about to leave school) He always looked older , as did JJ, Dave and Jet somethings "never change" because they all were older back in the day anyway. Pure brilliance. First and last men walk this earth but only a few survive., 👍👍👍
the girl on the bass is a very good musician ,she does a very very good job(it is difficult to play a song played before by jj burnel , because listeners will always compare your game with that of jj burnel)congratulations Caz Campbell
Amazing to see Hugh with a magical base player Kaz Campbell she is amazing on base and backing vocal nice drumming too. I do hope this continues on I miss Hugh in the Stranglers though now I believe this is better original vocal and amazing Kaz on base 🤩👍👍👍
When I was a 13 years old teen, I used to dream of owning a pair of doc martens, a black beat up lamborghini with spots of rust, cruising down the roads smoking a huge joint and munching on snickers listening to Black and White & Aural Sculpture full bast... go figure, but 37 years later I just remembered this fantasy while savouring this concert. Still lacking the lambo, got some catching up to do ;-)
Hugh Cornwell still has it great singer/songwriter/guitarist. You can hear that familiar Stranglers tone in his voice. Caz Campbell is wonderful on Bass and does a fine job laying down that fine groove. Just a shame there is no keyboards as Dave Greenfield was a major part of that fantastic Stranglers sound.
Spectacular gig, thank you for posting, so annoyed I am 45 years late on all this and 4 years late for catching you at the Triffid, Hugh. Love all your work 🙏 Caz is amazing ❤ as is the drummer. Nerves of Steel 💕 Oh Bearcage. Oh the Sewer! Much love 💋 Thank you all xxoo
Down in the sewer - one of all time favourite songs… and performed here proves why Hugh was the heart and soul of The Stranglers. What a genius of a man!
I grew up with Grand Funk Railroad, Black Sabbath, Scorpions, to name but a few. Then came "Rattus Norvegicus" and the Stranglers became part of my daily listening routine. What we have here 30 years later is quite close to the original Stranglers sound, without the genius of Dave Greenfield but still with a certain something. The bass makes my AKG headphones cry for help!
Sorry, not having the keyboards of David Greenfield, is such a void. Love the band, hate Hugh left, life continues. Golden Brown, Skin Deep, Nice in Nice, No More Heroes. Not complete without including keyboards. Shoot me, hate me, I just love their music. I will never stop listening. Slowly, all members of bands we listened to in our childhood will perish, a loss we will all succumb to, none of us get out of here alive. Let their music live on.
I’m pretty sure I watch this video every night! That three people alone can create this fabulous sound is amazing. The drummer is the best I’ve seen, the bass player is the coolest, sexiest bass player (and so brilliantly capable) , and … Hugh - a phenomenal vocalist, songwriter and guitarist - and what a thoroughly lovely bloke. When I see him here in Sydney on 1 August, my one hope is that he plays Down in the Sewer: one of my favourites of all time.
Fantastic set! [ALL OF IT) CAZ is amazing on the bass, Chris is amazing on the skins! Hugh is at his very best as a solo artist here! The Stranglers stuff is amazing! Cheers dx
I used to be walk 20 minutes home in my lunch hour (circa 1985) to play Down in on the Sewer on my stereo before heading back to work. This is the greatest concert I never went to. I can’t stop playing it. Looking forward to seeing Hugh perform here in Sydney in August. My life will be complete if he plays DITS!
Unbelievable. So good. The gal on bass was playing those parts with such precision and confidence. Her vibe is appealing and mesmerizing. A killer three piece. There were times when it sounded like there were two guitar players. Not only is Hugh a world class singer with an epic recognizable voice, but he's an amazing guitar player and songwriter. It was a collection of special elements that made the Stranglers the Stranglers with that sound, but a huge part of that was Hugh's voice and his guitar parts. Yes, Greenfields sounds and dissonant rhythms were a huge factor, but this is proof that these songs that we just heard are strong enough to stand on their own played with just that three piece. Different yes, but still amazing. It was also a really dynamic flow to the whole show. The magic was definitely there.
First time I have seen/heard a post - Stranglers performance by Hugh Cornwell. Has he been in hiding , under wraps , or what? As this was in 1993 , I note that he relied on a lot of Stranglers era material. 31years later , is he still active performing, writing ,etc ?
I saw this particular outfit in 2007 in Wolverhampton. Great gig. I got me some speed and I was doing fine. Hugh signed my then girlfiends boobs. I still have the photos of us having a beer together. Shame he seems to have lost his zen these days. I would have crawled over molten lava to watch him. But Hugh, thank you for the memories. You were the best.
Zen? He has come out of the wilderness... The gigs keep coming (not that I can get there 🙄) as do the songs. Only wish I could crawl through the magma to see him in the flesh! 🌏
This was really good ! actually better than the current Stranglers shows. Works well too with out the key boards even if I'd prefer to have them. And that's one badass bassist there, she's got it down !
my best friend at school was named Chris Bell, i bought my first stranglers album (no more heroes) from him. But that was up north, not likely the same Chris
Can't get enough of this gig, I'm definitely helping with your view count. Great audio and a top performance. Hugh is a legend, Caz on bass and Chris on drums are tight in this show, some nice brass to complement some of the songs and lovely melodies.
Hugh is an iconic figure, but it is so sad to listen to these GREAT songs without the Greenfield keyboards! They sound... sad! On the other hand, the young lady saves it because she is great on the "Stranglers" bass! What a pity, this band to be in different places, some together, some solo, like Hugh and most of all with Dave, dead... I really miss my youth! They were my heroes!
Sure is, it is a brave decision to play that song without the keyboard section, i never thought i would hear that happen, comes out sounding good though, good job by all
he has better musicians now, certainly the bass is better by far and Hugh has become more free form and spontaneous now, a great 3piece set up with crisp clean sound, solid bass & drums, wow!! Hugh is /was the driving heart, the John Lennon of the stranglers I always felt
I put Hugh on at the Cheese and Grain in Frome, his old band threatened legal action over posters that went up. We had to run around somerset changing the posters. A silly misunderstanding. What a great gig! lost a few quid, but saw a childhood hero!

Baz does.
