Did you know that leaf-cutter ants actually farm fungus? They’ve been farming for longer than humans have!

Schizolobium parahyba, the Brazilian firetree, or Brazilian fern tree, is a tree species from tropical America, notable for its fast growth (up to 3 meters per year). According to Francis Hallé, this tree may even reach 30 meters high in only five years, which would make it one of the fastest growing trees ever (an average growth of 6 meters per year).

It would make sense that they were trying to run a lumber mill on the property if they had such fast growing trees present.

Thanks Brandon, Will and the rest of the guys, for sharing this abandoned vid with us. The wood/lumber on the interior walls seems very viable and ready to re-use for other structures. Better have a talk with that ghost town mayor, eh?

16:26 Schizolobium parahyba = the Brazilian firetree, or Brazilian fern tree. the text is Scientific Name of the tree. Anti-snake venom properties of Schizolobium parahyba leaves.

Belize, formerly known as British Honduras was and still is an important training ground for jungle warfare, especially for British paratroopers and marines.
Most of these buildings look like standard British military complexes around the world from similar time periods. The building with the wooden ceiling was either an officers quarters or officers clubhouse. The Quonset hut was probably an NCOs office or something similar.
Belize became independent in 1981, with most British forces leaving Belize in the 90s, a training group has remained, but are now based at Price Barracks. With the British pulling out the local government wouldn't have been able to support a place this big without major effort. The road in and out would have been in MUCH better condition during the 80s.
The main problems with Belize are the drug cartels/gangs and the Guatamalans wanting to invade.

the sign you found at 16:25 that said "schizolobium pavahybum" is actually the Latin name for the Brazilian firetree (technically its spelled Schizolobium parahyba, but it's close enough that I would guess they meant the same thing. the first part above the "schizolobium pavahybum" that said "quamwood" is a nick name for the Brazilian firetree (possibly a common name in Belize for the Brazilian firetree). how this insight helps! keep up the great content!

Of course it was all militant bro, it was probably a place for soldiers, generals, medics, military intelligence, clerks, gov't officials, etc. to run & hide from enemy strikes, seek shelter, to render aid, rest & heal if wounded / injured... all types of war-battle / life or death situations... that place used to be known as the "British Honduras" ...think about it... it's Central America..! lots of grimey, cut-throat, jungle wars n sh!t in Belize, i can only imagine...

Keep in touch with will and if he decides to buy it, maybe you could kick in 10%.
Then when it turns into a city, you will have a place to stay whenever you go to Belize.
When he figures out the value of the property or maybe part of it, let me know how much 10% is in US dollars. 🤔

Hey, Brandon. I like the idea of it being a paintball area. Not so sure about a Pizza Hut, lol. Would you sell 'ghost' pizzas? That 'tiki hut' would be great as a small bar or dining area. Sorry to see the end of this Belize series... for now, at least. Thanks for sharing. Stay healthy and safe 👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

That box of Kellogg's had Yokai Watch on it which was released in Japan on July 11, 2013 and with the 2015 planner that you found I would say that that place hasn't been abandoned for 30 years but still cool stuff to be found.

    The sign says brazilian firetree.
    Or brazilian fern tree.
    Thats all it means.
This was probably a sign for where the trees were growing or where the logs/planks were stacked when they were done at the mill.

I will say its weird from an infrastructure point of view because they were able to get all the building materials and labor in for however many months/years it took to build the homes and other structures, but they couldn't find a food supply?
Note: did some research and realized that in 1996 was the time of the central american crisis and communist revolutions and a lot of civil unrest and bad infrastructure was extremely prevalent in Central America and areas like Belize. Makes more sense now. They made the town and then the country basically collapsed and people left to get away from the poverty abandoning the newly built city.
Also: Not german on that sign. It is the latin name for brazilian fern tree just written in a weird font.
