I like this topic. Learn something new here. Used to work at the Malay Heritage Centre as a security officer back in 2012-2013. Whoa…riots happened there outside the mosque for 3 days (I didn’t know about it). Interesting. The Gedung Kuning is a very interesting backstory about the bomoh used to stayed there. Could be useful for an inner story of my personal graphic novel.
Hello, I always feel intrigued by your paranormal series, keep on uploading more interesting videos. 😊 This looks like a great historical video about Kampong Glam.
I actually used to work in Gedung Kuning a few years ago and experienced some supernatural stuff. The bomoh story kinda explains alot now that I'm hearing about it
Malay last time used to use HantuRaya. Either to protect the land or help to cultivate the crops. Normally Singapore, Johor, Melaka n Pulau Besar used this.
I heard from my father, he was a teenager back then. A young Eurasian man was surrounded by a group of rioters, who took notice of him and wanted to beat him up. His only thought was just to run and he ran. He was luckily rescued by his friends. He said it was horrific back then! Racial harmony is crucial in Singapore and must be upheld with great care on this small, diverse island.
It was more about religious conflict plus the spillover from resentment over white supremacy and colonial masters. I don’t think race was the primary issue. Religious conflict because the court case made it about religion. When the court voted in favour of the parents, it became a question of injustice and unfair treatment by the white administration. Nationalist sentiment was riding high in the post war years. It was primarily an anti-colonial incident. A lot of changes were happening administratively from 1946 before we were granted self governing status in 1959. Leading up to 1959, we were actually established as the State of Singapore in 1958 but it was a weird administrative setup with the British still in the mix of the first cabinet ie Legislative Assembly with 25 out of 32 seats filled from the first elections in 1955. This was the era of David Marshall and Lim Yew Hock as Chief Ministers. On achieving full self governance in 1959, Lee Kuan Yew was elected into power and that was when the PAP pushed for merger with the Federation of Malaya to be free of our colony status and achieve full independence. Singapore’s status as a British colony pushing for merger to form Malaysia was seen as a pro-colonial conspiracy by Sukarno hence the Konfrantasi. So, our independence was hard won, with much shedding of blood and tears. Hence we fiercely protect our right to self governance and sovereignty to this day.
Just to share a note. In those historical days of the eventful riot, Singapore is a part of Malaya. The name Malaysia has not been born yet. People in Singapore is a part of Malaya.
Malaya was the short name, the formal name was Federation of Malaya but Singapore was not a part of the FM which was formed in 1948 and granted independence in 1957. We were only granted self governance as a Crown colony in 1959. We gained independence in 1963 when we joined the Federation to become Malaysia. 2 years later we were expelled. Maria Hertogh riots happened in 1950 when Singapore was still a Crown Colony. So, we were never part of Malaya but of Malaysia. Maria Menado the actress was 18 at the time, still a Christian and pro-Dutch as most Minasahans from Manado were. That’s how she got called Maria due to her interest in the case. Her real name was Liesbet Dotulong.
Very educational. It makes it even more interesting to be visiting these places.

Should invite the ex-residents to get real stories ;)
IMHO, this guest has no opinion whatsoever, he is a comedian??? It doesn't gives me that he is one, no offence...
