Thank you for listening Mr. Fantano! I appreciate your takes and actually agree with some of them. I had a lot of fun making this record and hope you had fun listening to it too! I'll take the light to decent 7 and wear it proud! -Cam
Love the new album! unfortunately can't make it to Amsterdam this November but hope to see you live again later :)) Do you also plan to rerelease your older EPs/Albums with the new label? I really want to buy them on CD, but I couldn't with bandcamp ;(
I'm a huge ginger root fan going back to Cam releasing MP3s of demos on a vulfpeck Facebook fan group back in like 2017/18. Absolutely insane to see how far it's come as a project. I am loving clutching my first presses of Mahjong Room, Toaster Music, and Rikki now 🤣
I found him through a photo of him hanging out with Jack Stratton a few years back. It's kinda funny to go back to his old stuff now, like his It Gets Funkier cover. You can definitely see how much he's improved since then
I always rate songs based on how much I enjoy them, rather than diving into technical analysis. In my opinion, the album SHINBANGUMI deserves at least a solid 7/10. One standout feature is how well the 'timing' of each track aligns with the mood of the day. The album has a strong 80s Japanese city pop vibe, and the songs seem perfectly matched to different times of the day, as shown in GR’s visualizer on TH-cam. For example, "Better Than Monday" feels like a daytime track, "Only You" is suited for the evening, and "Take Me Back" fits the nighttime mood. What I love most is that listening to the album gives you a sense of harmony with the time of day, enhancing the experience even though the chances of hitting the 'right' mood are about 1/3. If you're listening during the day, the evening and night tracks might not resonate as deeply, and vice versa. Still, despite this, the album remains highly enjoyable throughout.
I'm so glad to see you're reviewing Ginger Root, I've been a huge fan since like 2019, I'm going to see him in November. He deserves more attention here in the states
Its nice you acknowledged Ariel Pink as one of the potential influences despite what went down previously, loved the songs off Ginger Root's City Slicker EP so will have to give this a spin 📀✨️
Mostly agreed as well (though I disagree that “Take Me Back” was a weak ending track, since it calls back to “Only You”, “There Was A Time”, and “Kaze” which precede the “No Problems” melody. I honestly really liked the way the snippets meshed in with each other).
I saw Ginger Root and Devo live in the same year and both were some of the strongest shows Ive ever been to as far as cohesive multimedia presentations and very thought through and intentional delivery on all fronts. Devo obviously are pioneers in that lane and kind of without equal but Ginger Root has brought the lightning in a bottle both times Ive seen them.
Make sure to watch the videos too, there’s one for every full song (a few haven’t been released yet) and they tell a cool story that goes along with the album
Didn’t expect this to get a review from you! I was following for the singles from this one, great city pop revival album. My favorite one is Better than Monday
yeah i gotta agree with you on this one. Shinbangumi is a good album but it feels as a whole a bit too incomplete. a 7 is quite fair. still, cant wait to see ginger root on tour soon!
I loved this album with all my Heart But I see what you say that he played It safe again in many tracks and YES I need More SOUL, BOSSA NOVA, and maybe some rock like in Spotlight people!
I went to a Last Dinosaurs concert in Chicago in ~2019 or so. Cameron opened up for the opening band (forget who they were lol). I had no idea who this guy was, and I figured he was the announcer or something, but his setup was cool, his personality was charming, and his music was groovy. Tbh I haven't really listened to his music since then but I've been a fan since that day. Imma have to check out his music since then.
The replay value is high on this one. I've had it on repeat for the past week, it just fills me with so much joy on every listen. This is the kind of music I needed in 2024. 8/10 'Better Than Monday' is one of the great pop songs of this decade.
Gives Melt-Banana a strong 9 on their previous album and now he wont even review their new one. I don't like them but I'm interested to see if Fantano still does. They seem like something he'd like 10 years ago but not these days.
I enjoyed City Slicker, but this one didn't hit nearly as much for me. I've been a huge fan of Ginger Root for a few years now, so I was anticipating this project's release. Despite that, I don't think I will be revisiting many of these tracks very often. No Problems and Kaze were some standouts that I really enjoyed. I agree with your thoughts on how Lew should lean into the more extreme and silly vocals, and the fact that there's not a whole lot of that on this album was certainly a disappointment. I'd have to give it a strong six to a light seven, for sure.
I've keep seeing a lot of japanese bands that has a bit of nostalgic western like band music instead of modern Jpop and Ginger Root is one of them in my TH-cam recommendations lol.
Thank you for listening Mr. Fantano! I appreciate your takes and actually agree with some of them. I had a lot of fun making this record and hope you had fun listening to it too! I'll take the light to decent 7 and wear it proud! -Cam
Hi Cam, Loved your newest release. I can't wait to see perform in Vancouver at the Pearl in a couple of weeks. Keep up the great work!
Can’t wait to see you on Tuesday I’m so excited to hear you perform the album
Love the new album! unfortunately can't make it to Amsterdam this November but hope to see you live again later :))

I purchased your new album on cassette , I can't wait to listen to it.
Please expand your UK tour and come and visit Nottingham 🧡
"In fact, the entire record feels like a weird, long-lost pop gem that you would catch in some random crate at a record store..." that's high praise
there's also tons of classic city pop albums that posit themselves exactly like that
In all seriousness Ginger Root is great, awesome to see a review!
POV: Melon is taking your photo and tells you you’re a strong 6 to a light 7
better than i thought i was
That’s a compliment for me
So in reality I'm more of an 8 to the average person got it
That "medieval herbalists when their supplies are delayed:" tweet is still iconic and was how I discovered this guy, great music
GINGER ROOT IN FORTNITE?!?!

@@AshanmarilThat song always made me think something was wrong with my headphones, that buzzing sound in the right channel always gets me
The Killing Joke thumbnail is crazy
POV of Fantano torturing artists with bad reviews until they snap
he is also releasing a music video for every song on it to make it like a mini movie
Like Daft Punk's Interstellar 5555?
@@barriniho Pretty much. Except live action. And no blue people. Sorry.
thats my favourite thing about his albums. their an album, but also a movie!
Even Fantano is under rating Ginger Root. This is my album of the year just based on creativity.
"Even" Fantano? If anyone were to underrate Ginger Root, it would be Fantano lol
Oh yeah, this Gingers my Root
HAWK TUAH
This is cooking my gingered roots to a mild simmer 🗣️🗣️
In the Juban District, straight up “gingerin” it. And by it, ha well, let’s justr say… my root

Personally, this is a real AOTY contender. It's only been out for a few days, and I've given it way too many spins. Really proud of Cam on this one.
I will say the second half of the album was rather weak, save for the finale
NO WAY!!! IT FINALLY HAPPENED, GINGER ROOOOOT!!!!!
I'm so glad to see you're reviewing Ginger Root, I've been a huge fan since like 2019, I'm going to see him in November. He deserves more attention here in the states
These guys opened for Hippo Campus back in 2022, my girlfriend and I fell in love so I’m happy to see a review on this channel!
Fell in love at the hippo campus show? Think you forgot a word 😁
Hippo fell off but Ginger stay winning

GINGER ROOT FANTANO REVIEW, THIS IS NOT A DRILL!
Yo didn't think you'd ever review ginger root
Love putting on some Ginger Root when I’m rolling Katamaris!
if the artist was called melon root you would have given it a 10
Love me some ginger root, big fan since loretta ,on heavy rotation for me and imo, better than mondays, best song of the album.
GINGER ROOT GOT A DAMN SCORE
fantano says all my favorite artists “painted themselves in a corner” during reviews 😂
Yep. If anyone ever makes an ai TND review, i guarantee that line would be in there 😂
"I know it's a little zany, but we can only afford one actress and a baby.
A ... a baby?
And a ... a Melon"
He finally reviewed real music
I’d love to see Ginger Root open up the vocals a bit beyond the tape gimmick
Agreed with this take. Ginger Root has such an incredible discography but this album feels like it was holding back creatively.
Mostly agreed as well (though I disagree that “Take Me Back” was a weak ending track, since it calls back to “Only You”, “There Was A Time”, and “Kaze” which precede the “No Problems” melody. I honestly really liked the way the snippets meshed in with each other).
My goat ginger root got a review😭album was fye asl
Now I'm just waiting for the Molchat Doma, Belaya Polosa review.

Devo obviously are pioneers in that lane and kind of without equal but Ginger Root has brought the lightning in a bottle both times Ive seen them.
I liked city slicker and this album cover looks clean, definitely give a listen 👍
Make sure to watch the videos too, there’s one for every full song (a few haven’t been released yet) and they tell a cool story that goes along with the album
Take me Back is my favorite song. I love the call backs to the earlier tracks and the feel of it
Ginger root has quite a distinct sound, really dig his vision and vibe. Like the project and videos.
*SHOW 10 IS THE BEST SONG OF 2000'S*
*IM NOT JOKING*
This would have been a 9 if it was called "Give me a 9 anthony fantano"
Harshest 7 of all time??
LEAVE CAMERON ALONE
thumbnail looking a little devious

Hell yeah, personally loved this a lot
Loretta came up in a random playlist for me a few years ago, been hooked on the Root ever since.
I found this album sonically comforting.
Wow I can’t believe melon is not wearing a yellow flannel but instead blue just to match the blue album cover
I love take me back because it has so many motifs
You know what? It is show 10 tonight.

Where is the Fabiana Palladino review?
Melon, I adored this record. Still do.
I think a solid 7 is pretty good! I was thinking it would land in the 6-8 range if a review came along
Molchat Doma -Belaya Polosa ALBUM REVIEW when??❤❤❤❤
I freaked out when I saw this video omg Ginger root has been one of my favourite artists for a very long time!!

Ginger root mentioned!! What a gem of a band, honestly
Finally, the long awaited sequel to Zingalamaduni.
Spirit of the beehive when???
Yeah, that album is awesome!!!
I think Ginger Root sounds a lot like some of Dent May's songs.
As a ginger, I am rooting for this guy!
FANTANO REVIEWING GINGER ROOT IS SOMETHING I WOULD *NEVER* EXPECT 😭
3:09 for new music
literally thought this whole album was full of potential "Loretta 2's"
This might be the first album I was following organically before I saw Fantano talk about it
