As much as we keep coming back to Emile Ardolino’s 1987 film for the iconic romance, Patrick Swayze, and of course, the dancing, there’s a deeper meaning in Frances “Baby” Houseman’s character arc that explains why this story has struck a chord for so many viewers ever since its release. Frances’ progression from “Baby” to woman is a symbolic awakening into her femininity and sexuality-a coming-of-age expressed as coming into one’s own body. As Baby takes ownership of her desires and physicality, she achieves confidence, maturity and purpose. Here's our Take on Dirty Dancing’s timeless insights into the young female experience. Baby was the embodiment of the strong, sensible woman we want to inspire girls.
She admires the blonde dancer for her talent, never feels threatened or jealous of her close relationship with the guy.
She helps her, a stranger in distress, to get an abortion, uses her own money and when things get tough, she sets aside her fear of punishment and thrusts this secret to his father to help her.
She is emotionally mature enough to have umcomfortable or difficult conversations in a healthy way. Like when her father is angry and dissapointed at her, and she is the first one to start a dialogue with him, although he is the adult.
Thw movie shows her curiosity and sexual awakening in a mature, realistic way. And she is not being sexualized in the proccess.

Can we talk about how woke this film is? The entire premise is about a girl helping another girl needing an abortion and she's never shamed for needing it, no one treats her badly for it, they all rally behind her, even Baby's father helps her. Like whoa.

    • @poeticjustice1000
      @poeticjustice1000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +115

Woke in many ways; totally dormant in others. The culturally diverse story it could have included would've sealed it as being 100% socially and racially aware. Set in the 1960s, it easily could've had some African Americans in service hospitality; (since the US had lawful Segregation at the time, it's understandable all the guests were white. No excuse for the "below stairs" being virtually all white also though). Equally, the appropriation of a Central and South American amalgamated originated dance, seen to be taught and mastered by only white people, takes away it's completely "woke" credentials. I have to say though, I don't expect anything more from a 1980s Hollywood movie, so it doesn't affect my love of the movie.

poeticjustice1000 It’s not as diverse as it could be, true, but there is a black couple in service who are shown as completely integrated in the dirty dancing party who are seen in later scenes and the music conductor is also African-American and he’s treated by Max Kellerman as a confidante with a secret cache of modern sheet music at the end.

    • @spaceylacey83

@@arieldiaz4607 two background characters (who are paired with each other) and a smiling Black Confidant in a subordinate role kinda screams tokenism and pointing it out doesn't really work as a defense of the film's diversity. Like poeticjustice said, though, it's an 80s movie about white people. It's done, it can't be edited any further, and we don't expect it to be more than it is. Talking about this isn't an attack and it doesn't need to be defended against. I love this movie and it sounds like poeticjustice and the ladies who wrote this video do, too.

True. A lot of movies that take place in other periods don't bother trying to really be true to the time. I think sometimes that has to do with the budget. Dirty Dancing has some 60s fashions in it. But it is like watching the tv shows Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley in their later years. When those shows stared in the 70s and took place in the 50s they originally tried to have clothing and hair that matched the time period. But as time went on the hair and clothing no longer looked right.

One of my favorite late-night-with-ice-cream movies. I like how Baby is naive, but not dumb, and the film is sexy without it being some kind of creepy male-gaze unrealistic fantasy of a woman, instead her taking charge herself.
I feel like this is a film that conservative girls (of which I'm not one, but I've known a few), who get cut off at the knees by their family and environment from their own bodies and sexuality, should see. They should learn that there's no shame in exploring it fully.

It’s a steamy movie for sure but it’s just one aspect of the complex, mature relationship Johnny and Baby have. I think that’s why my friend was insistent on not fast forwarding through “those scenes” and making sure I got the context.

I think something really interesting about Dirty Dancing, other than watching Baby blossom from a shy and insecure girl to a confident woman, was her’s and Johnny’s relationship (not necessarily in a romantic sense). They both have entirely different perspectives on life due to different upbringings and lifestyles, but also differing perspectives of each other. It’s evident from the beginning that Baby is incredibly infatuated with Johnny and finds him charming and thinks he’s “too cool” for her. However, when Baby goes back to his place the night they performed at the Sheldrake, it’s revealed that Johnny thinks Baby’s amazing and he even thinks she’s “too good” for him. They both see something in each other that the other doesn’t see and they both think the other is better than them. It’s kind of ironic. I just find that incredibly interesting and I think that really helped them both to grow as human beings. They both help each other see another side of themselves that they didn’t realize they were or were capable of being. And I think that’s really important when it comes to a true partner, or a true friend.
Also, they both have mastered something that the other hasn’t. It’s obvious that Johnny has mastered his body. Through dancing, he has gained full-control of his body which helps him carry himself confidently, and he eventually helps Baby to do the same. Meanwhile, Baby has pretty much mastered her mind and heart. She is in touch with her emotions and her mind and she has a strong moral compass. She isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right and isn’t afraid to stand up for the people she cares about. We see that when she stands up for Penny and Lisa when she discovers what a slime ball Robbie is. She’s mastered courage. And Johnny is able to take what he’s learned from Baby and he’s able to stand up for himself and Baby. He stands up to Baby’s father and he stands up for himself and the other dancers at the end of the film during the iconic dance scene.
So, it’s interesting to see how Baby finally grows into a woman, however, it’s even more interesting to see how Johnny and Baby help each other grow. It’s a relationship that probably didn’t last forever, but it demonstrates how people help each other out whether it be partners or friends. How the right people in our lives, regardless if they’ve been in our lives for a long time or are new to our lives, can share their knowledge and expertise with us and can help us to grow and reach our potential. We even see how Johnny’s friends Penny and Billy helped Baby grow, and vice versa, Baby helps Penny and Billy grow.

SPOT ON !!! they both learn a lot from each other and i agree he thought she was "too good" for her yet also remember the scene when he sort of got mad at her when she didn't wanna tell her dad that they were together due to the prejudices he had towards the kind of background johnny came from (and also because of the incident that occurred)and when he punched robbie for making a slutshaming remark towards her (when robbie mocks her by saying that's okay baby i go slummin ((aka sleeping around,)) too) that has to be one of my favorite scenes in the movie as i recall it in my head, going back to the post sheldrake scene he tells her the reason why he's never felt like anything that mattered was because of how people see him as nothing else but she then reassures that someone out there cares for him (when she goes and says "that's not true, you're everything!") also if you think about it towards the end they both don't see each other as no more or less than one another, and i've always loved that.

I am crying in the best way possible! I LOVED this movie and still do. I wonder if part of the reason I connected with it so much was because it WAS sex positive in an understated way? Not that I realized that at 15, but you know what I mean. Most "romantic" movies wound up with the female lead blubbering her eyes out! Yup. A great, positive film.
And now, a real-life Patrick Swayze story:
A friend of mine was attending her cousin's wedding, and the groom was related to Patrick Swayze, who was in attendance. This was well past his heyday (around 04, if memory serves). and he and his wife were there, just like "normal" people. My friend, like me, grew up on Dirty Dancing and made up her mind. She quickly downed her drink (she needed the nerve) and walked with, what she hoped was a semblance of grace, to his table. "Excuse me. Mr Swayze? I am So and So and I will hate myself if I don't do this. Would you please do me the honor of dancing with me, if your wife doesn't mind, of course?" They smiled at each other and he said "Lisa do you mind?" Lisa chuckled and said "So and So, please dance with my husband. He would be delighted to" They danced for three songs and he was every bit the gentleman you would hope.
To this day, she says that was the best wedding she ever attended - including her own in 2012!

When I was young I complained that she was some shallow girly girl who is all about her looks. But as a 30 years old I feel sorry, she has no musical talent or rhythm and could be ridiculed while she wants positive attention. She is hung up on her looks because she was reduced to them.

Woah, THAT’S why I as a young woman love this sexy movie more than others! There are tons of “sexy movies“ out there, but nearly all of them are framed for the male gaze. I’d never realized that this one plays almost exclusively to the female gaze, which feels so much more relatable to me.
_Especially_ since the whole storyline is relatable to me; I had a similar experience of discovering and awakening my own sexuality and sensuality not that long ago. He also only stayed for a month. But I have never felt so alive in all my 22 years as I did in that month. And though it ended bittersweetly, I would still never trade that month for anything, because the majority of those memories are happy, and taught me so much about myself.

The thing I always find amazing about this movie is the way they handle the goodbye scene. No one is crying over the only love that will ever happen or that they wont ever meet again. Baby and Johnny look back on what they had and then they separate thinking it's over just to see each other by the end of the movie. Everyone understands this is life and it's better to appreciate good memories than focus on the journey ending couse by the end of the day nothin really ends

Dirty Dancing is one of those movies that I gladly watch every time it's on. I remember watching it for the first time as an awkward tween and feeling such a strong connection to Baby's apparent discomfort in her own body.
To see her journey throughout the film, now as an adult, I can appreciate just how lucky so many girls of my generation were to have a film that showed a young woman taking charge of her life, body and sexuality without some kind of tragic ending.
I'm looking forward to the next time I get to watch it through this analytical lens.

I couldn’t enjoy it cause I could see baby as a younger version of myself who was treated bellow all the time and I hated seeing that. I wanted baby to take the lead in the dancing, to stand up for herself because that’s what I wanted from myself. Thanks for this I finally understand the problem.

This analysis made me watch the movie again yesterday. The way Patrick Swayze jumps in the last dance scene is incredible. Both Baby and Johnny have to mature emotionally to stay together in the end. I think that’s why it’s so popular because the characters grow and evolve because of their love and standing up for one another. And they didn’t stay the same.

A former girlfriend of mine had me watch this, being her favorite movie. I couldn't really get into it at the time. I think part of the problem is that Jennifer Grey (then 26) was so good at playing younger that I thought she was 16 rather than 18, and the idea of a statutory romance made Johnny seem like a predator, even despite Baby coming into her own.

    • @VicenteTorresAliasVits
      @VicenteTorresAliasVits 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Even if she was 16, Johnny doesn't display any predatory behavior. There are cases where teen girls (and boys) aren't mentally/emotionally mature enough to have sex with someone their own age, let alone someone older, but others are. In this movie, we follow this relationship step by step. We see that there's no manipulation nor an unbalanced dynamic. The romance develops naturally.

Baby was a pretty good role model. Even at my age I have never been as bold in my idealism as she was in the movie. Only in recent years did I learn about Ayn Rand. Yet she was there in the movie all along. I guess the movie was a bit more intellectual behind it all. Great video! Take up dancing! I’ve loved dancing since I took my first class at the age of 4. It’s really amazing how you can express so many different emotions just through the way your body moves. Think of it as art.
To get in touch with yourself as a sensual being means getting in touch with your physical body, your creative mind, a nurturing spirit, a desire to be seen and to honor your instincts. It requires you to slow down and really be present. Anything you do where you can accomplish those goals will help you be more in touch with your body and physical presence. Also eat well and make sure to get plenty of rest!
Journal and reflect on your emotions & on meaningful interactions or when you try something new. How you felt physically and emotionally. You’ve got it in you you just have to become aware of yourself. Stay beautiful rianka!

@@riankagill pleasure to help, it’s a journey I’m on myself and that’s really a bit of a lifelong continual journey from what I understand
It’s a challenge in such a technology driven, logic driven culture to get out of our heads enough to truly be present... so good on you for wanting to grow in this way. Give yourself some grace for the speed bumps along the way and surround yourself with kind, trustworthy people. Having solid mentors and friends I can talk to made (and for me, still make) all the difference in the world

@@MalloryNewcomb ironically enough, creators on youtube and instagram have kinda been my mentors !! channels like hitomi mochizuki’s as well as videos like this one are what i’ve tried to spend my screen time on since the pandemic 😌

@@riankagill That’s very good you’ve found some helpful sources on the internet. Hopefully you also have a community of friends you can talk to about this stuff too even if it is over zoom.
That was a challenge for me being a conservative Christian amongst many other personal holdbacks... They were REALLY tough to overcome (like a whole other TED talk) and simply, it took me a long time to find women I trusted enough that I got that ‘safe space’ ... but eventually I found trustworthy women and my life is better for it. :)
Also I recently got some advice to wear clothes that make you feel good about you. Clothes that make you feel attractive and confident. Makes such a difference ✌🏼
