    This story is a nice work of fiction.
    HTM stated many times that months out warrior was getting belt and that HTM was given the freedom to come up with the match, which was awesome. Just think, people remember that 20 second or so match from over 3 decades ago. That says a lot.

      Ikr!? barber was never going to win the IC over Warrior and he was always a B tier wrestler plus shoeshiner for terry bollea having lifelong heat with Warrior out of jealousy because he was one of few people terry couldn’t use his politics to bury.
      Barber is a pos and suddenly a tough guy after warrior died making paid shoot interviews like this being jealous of Warriors massive success barber invents fictitious stories to scam some smark in a paid shoot interview.
      It’s also disgusting when talking about a dead man who cant defend himself against obvious lies.

    Honky Tonk Man has stated in numerous shoot interviews that Brutus was never scheduled to get the title at SummerSlam. They had decided to go with Warrior several months before the ppv and even had test runs between Warrior and HTM at house shows. Ultimate Warrior had not even been around long enough to be able to politic in 1988. Take anything Brutus says with a grain of salt or less.

      Yeah it seems like the people that are still around from that time exaggerate and lie about stories from that time. Notice it's always a story that involves people that are no longer around also, so that they can't defend themselves or call them out for their bullshit stories.

      Yes. You're absolutely right Harker. I pulled up a shoot interview video that Honky did about 7 years ago with Hannibal. And Honky said it was planned like 6 months or longer in advance that he would be dropping the IC title to the Warrior. I personallly like Brutus, but I just can't believe a lot of what he says most of the time. Same thing with his buddy Hulk. Hogan is not very believable most of the time either with his stories. .

  • @TheDaveKrueger
    @TheDaveKrueger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    I don't know how accurate that is because Honky claims that when Vince told him he was going to lose it to Warrior it was because "I'm building him up to face Hogan at WM" so if that's the case then I highly doubt Warrior got the belt based off threatening to quit.
    Heck, he wasn't even in a power position to try a bold move like that yet like he later would be at Summerslam 91.

    • @fingersTitan
      @fingersTitan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HTM was only as passing champ when he 1st got the title as well.. He was supposed to only hold it for a few weeks until it went to (I think it was) Tito but he left the company to be with his wife who just had a baby and Vince wasn't happy at all about it.. So HTM ended up holding it for a record at the time.
      It's funny that this joke thinks that no one else has talked about that era and guys like HTM have 1001 shoot interviews talking about things like the IC title.

    • @TheJohnnyCotts
      @TheJohnnyCotts 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@fingersTitan Ricky Steamboat was the one who was IC Champ, then left to be with his wife when their baby was due.
      According to HTM, the plan was to give the IC title to Butch Reed, but he no-showed the TV taping, and they needed to get the title off Ricky, so Hogan suggested Vince giving it to him.
      As for how long his reign was supposed to be, HTM claims he told Vince, "If I don't draw, take it off me". I think we all know he was supposed to drop the title to Randy Savage at WM4 at one point, but he was in talks to go to WCW and felt having the belt increased his bargaining position, so he refused to drop it. Because of that, they redid the bracketing for the WWF World title tournament and had Savage win that.

      He’d have had a better chance if he hadn’t been clinging to Hogan for dear life. Fans were pleased when he came back for the Barber Shop - he should’ve gone into singles when he was cleared for in-ring competition instead of tagging with Hogan in the mask. Hogan was just waiting for his chance to steal the belt back, sitting and watching the likes of Warrior and Hart fail to set the world alight. I notice the Hulkster also waited until Savage was all but retired before trying that because he knew the Macho Man was a legit threat

      @Red Dogg - Rebel4Truth so you questioned my statement only to agree with it? I didn't put a time frame on saying undeserved paydays, but he only main evented summerslam because he's hogan's homie, the beefcake character was nowhere near that level. He was a well known gimmick, but "top guy" is a bit much considering after turning babyface at mania 3 and splitting from the dream team (86-87) he never had a title again. But continued gimmicks with booty man after zodiac after the butcher, if he didn't have the Hogan connection, wouldn't habe happened. @Red Dogg - Rebel4Truth Anybody alive watching wrestling back then (I was 10) knows there were gimmicks far more over, better in ring performers and that Hogan and beefcake had been a tag team in other territories. I've never read a single observer newsletter or listened to their podcast, but I was buying PWI at Mr. Paperback when I was six years old and by Summerslam 89 had already been watching five years and have a great memory. I've also never actually heard anyone say that's why he got the summerslam 89 spot, but it's my opinion and has a 99% probability of being right lol. I also tire of people using "marks" on these type of clips, because I guarantee you've spent money on wrestling and that's all a mark is, I don't take it as a pejorative statement as you people try to use it. Who knows what you originally wrote.

    The first being at Summer Slam '88 (originally before they changedit to the Ultimate Warrior), and at Summer Slam '90 when he was scheduled to face Mr. Perfect, but Kerry Von Erich had to fill his spot, after "the Barber's" catastrophic, near death accident.

    Bullshit. Vince realised the money was with Warrior, Jim didn't have such pull at the time even though he was getting over... They clearly were placing Warrior in a prominent position prior to Summerslam by feuding with Bobby Heenan. Beefcakes timing was sadly unlucky. But Warrior wouldn't have a leg to stand on if he pulled the I quit card for not winning the IC title. Vince was absolutely in love with the Warrior. I'm sure Vince told Beefcake some BS. Warrior winning was the right call as he immediately became the second biggest draw in the company by mid to late 89 the No1 as Hogan was ice cold post Savage Mania match feuding with Zeus. Beefcake is Hogan's lackey so he'll say anything to bad mouth Warrior. Sadly Warriors momentum was in the chase to the top rather than being on top.

It could be suggested that the "one little thing" of NOT winning the IC Belt really did keep him alive. His gimmick made no sense. Started out as a male stripper, then had a barber gimmick grafted onto that. What barbers come out in a Chippendales-style bowtie and tights with cutouts showing black pantyhose or fishnets? Even when I was too little to understand the stripper aspect I was a bit put off and uncomfortable; something didn't come together right. I suspect Vince understood this too, that putting a belt on him would raise his profile too much, raise questions.

    I don't think it would have anything to do with Warrior demanding the belt. Warrior was way over, second only to Hogan. You can't give Warrior the world title at the time so you give him the IC belt. Fans wanted a belt around his waist and WWF wanted to sell merchandise.

    Listening to interviews with Brutus is frustrating. On one hand, a lot of people say that he only had a spot because he was friends with Hogan - that is not true, Brutus was super over with the fans from 1988-1990, like really over. But on the other hand, he constantly just flat out lies in interviews like this when there are very established facts on these point already, which keeps his credibility low with those that try to argue the first point I mentioned.

    Blatant lies by Brutus. Warrior did not throw a tantrum and threatened to quit if he didn't win the belt at Summerslam 88. For starters, at the time Warrior didn't have that kind of leverage. Also Honkys match wasn't short because he was mad at losing it to Warrior and not to Brutus. It was short to make an impact. Vince made the change because Warrior was getting crazy over and Vince saw star potential in him.

That's like cutting your nose off to spite your face then he goes on to blame the parasailing accident on Warrior as if he wouldn't have been hanging with Hogan and riding the jetski had he been I-C champion?? That's just plain stupid Hogan was on top of the world why would he be in the same place Brutus claimed he wouldn't be if he was given a run with the secondary title??

    Barber clearly inventing fake stories so some smark will throw money at him in a shoot interview.
    What is this clown who was b tier wrestler all his life and only got booked due to kissing terry’s rear for 20 years . Warrior was nuclear over with fans and was destined for the IC belt, it is infuriating seeing shoot interviews ‘calling out’ Warrior with false statements when the man died 9 years ago and cant defend himself.

    He was pretty popular. Him and Tatanka were the two most over guys that didn’t get that IC belt when they should have. I had to laugh when he brought up the butterfly effect and Sliding Doors (both movies about time) and without missing a beat. Brutus said “well it’s kinda like on tv, you know those movies about time where one little thing effects everything?” LMBO uh yeah, like the two movies I just named. The example I just used, yeah it is like that.

When his music hit people went wild. I’ve been to a million wrestling events and the only time I’ve seen someone get a bigger reaction was Roman Reigns and the USOs at a house show in Pensacola recently. With that undefeated streak Tatanka had something special.
